Note that during the whole fight, his gaze is lowered. He was too ashamed of himself to look you in the eyes. He was ashamed of what he'd done, but tried to comfort himself by saying it was for the good of his people. By destroying the Mercy option, he pretty much told you he wanted to die by your hand. He felt that in doing so, he'd be able to forgive himself.

I find the history of Japan intresting and the roots of samurai actualy intresting. They were intresting to learn about and how they served a master. It's just so good when I get to hear stuff about Japanese lore and it actualy makes me enjoy the culture even more knowing knowledge like that and I actualy want to visit Japan sometime to see all the stuff there and get to experience a trip to some where new

Okay headcanon time: Intro is Asgore, in a kimono, solemnly putting on his helmet and standing up revealing he's had his full attire on under the kimono. After his "It was nice to meet you" dialogue he unsheathes his katana and throws away the sheathe (like how destroying the mercy button suggests he doesn't feel like he DESERVES mercy) and readies for battle. Unlike all the other monsters (except Toriel) he only uses magic attacks, another way of showing he doesn't want to be fighting. The only time he'd inflict damage directly with his blade is if you spare him after beating him as he commits seppuku.
