I'm watching this the 3. or 4. time over the last weeks and I still don't get bored, as Jorbs is really good at communicating his thoughts and all the way through the video pointing out that card value is nothing static but a very, very volatile thing based on: - what you got - what you need - what you want
I died twice playing silent on A12 before he even picked his first cards
30 minutes in, and not a single card has been played. Despite that, it's one of the most gripping StS videos I've ever seen. This is the content I subscribed for, good job!

yup. starting at 1:37:00 the spreadsheet needed to be removed. he spent the entire first hour talking about getting past gremlin nob, and I never got to see what cards he played during that fight because he had the spreadsheet in the way. total Homer moment. doh! also? This was amazing, and using what I learned from it, I beat the heart on A20 with Silent for the first time. Not only do your videos help me play the game better, they help me enjoy the game more, by recognizing previously-overlooked aspects of strategy that are both useful and fun. Would love to see videos for Ironclad and Defect when you have the time.

@Andy B mad at an innocuous 2 year old YT comment, huh? classic.
I watched this3 hour video and it was great but that two minutes with the spreadsheet on the screen I was losing my mind
I watched this video 3 months ago when I first started playing, and now I watched it it again now I'm 200 hours in and running a 15+, and I still learn new things.
I loved this video! I don't even mind that you didn't win the run, seeing you go into detail on decisions on a hard run like this was very interesting and I learned a lot more than I would have on some run where you get an OP combo early on and make a bunch of obvious choices. I found it interesting how much you focused on immediate needs for the deck over long term goals- I think this is where I fail the most in this game, I get a few parts of a good deck and try too hard to make it happen. If I were playing this run I'd have gone much more heavily into the discard synergies for example, hearing you talk about specific needs for the enemies in that act made me entirely rethink how I value cards.
Probably the best guide for a beginner that I have seen so far, I actually ended up watching the entire thing without even realizing it.

JoINrbs releasing a 3 hour overexplain run? perfect way to start off my winter break.
After pouring in thousands of hours into this game, I manage to come to this and learn so much more about the complexity and finesse of the game and this class in specific. Amazing video, perhaps all time favorite StS video, and I would love to see a part 2. Keep it up!
I can't believe I just finished the whole thing. I really enjoyed it, this analysis is beyond the casual gameplay I'm used to while struggling at Ascension 6. It was definitely a really neat experience. I hope to see more of these!
This is absolutely delectable. I would love more overexplain runs when you have the time. Just joined up on Patreon because you are my favorite streamer / youtuber of the year by far!
Really enjoyed the deep dive into your thought process for card selection. Knowing what cards NOT to take is perhaps as important as which cards to take. Thanks for posting.
This was so helpful, now I can understand the mindset behind playing Spire properly. It's amazing how deep the strategy can go, feels like I have only scratched the surface.
I love this content. This is amazing and I love seeing the deep dives into strategy and why you do what you do.

At 1:35:52, was it worth mentioning that the Tea Set it quite good for helping with act bosses, since you draw 9 cards at the start of the fight, and being able to afford to play scaling cards early in a boss fight is quite good?

Don't know if this will reach you since it's a year+ later but I want to say that this was a very good video. You explained how you want to build a deck in this game very well, weighing how to get through act 1 while getting through the entire game very well. It's also a very good demonstration of how you can do very well but still die on Ascention 20 at any point, since you mainly carried through in the run without many noticeable mistakes. Of course, you can pick it apart in retrospect, however hindsight is 20/20 in that respect. If this was too long people just need to run your videos in 1.5 or 1.25 speed. But this made me subscribe for more content. Keep up the great work! Gonna go into your more recent videos after this.
I really enjoy your decision making process, I think people can apply this kind of thinking to other aspects of their life too, not just in this video game.
I'm on A17 right now, and this has been very insightful and helpful so far tyvm
A third of the way through and hes still on floor 4 Fantastic video
This was an extremely informative video, thank you for uploading
I learned a lot ^^, I definitely play too much for the "perfect deck" rather than think about what it has to do in the next 3 floors
god damn half an hour in and you haven't even started the first fight yet. Well at least your title's not clickbait
Watched the first hour to give me a better idea on how to start a run and immediately destroyed the next few ascencion levels I was stuck at. Thanks jorbs. Now to watch the rest
Was looking forward to a 3h video ending in a heart kill. Instead I got more explanations than I bargained for and loved it until the end.
For ascension 20+heart, the most consistent way for winning with Silent has actually been Catalyst to me. In many runs, I even picked Catalyst up before I had any poison and it worked itself out miraculously. Double Catalyst+ simply wins fights so well. Course you dont get some way of double-catalyst in every run... But I made it happen in surprisingly many runs. Also, the good old Fumes+Stack Defence works out pretty well. The heart is the biggest problem there, cause it can overwhelm Silent at a certain point.
This guide was amazingly helpful. Just slaughtered A18 first try. Got an early tiny chest and prioritized ? rooms for 4 relics worth. Onward to 20!
As a new player, if you have the patience, these runs are a boon of knowledge. That being said... I want zero cost Well-Laid Plans back!!! D:
I keep coming back to this video either to (re)learn stuff about this game or just to fall asleep to it.

Thanks for posting this!
There is a saying which in my opinion fits very well to the overexplained videos you make, which came to my mind when you were talking about which cards to upgrade: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."
Im really watching this 3 hour video of tactics and minmaxing when i cant even be arsed to put up defend to prevent 1 dmg
Not only entertaining, improved my own game incredibly!
I think you did have one other line against the stabby book: You had 24 hp. Footwork + Fumes + 1x defend gives 7 block, he hits you for 21, you end up at 10 (you keep the phantasmal killer). Next turn you would use the block potion, get hit for 28, and have to draw 2 backflips, then play phantasmal to end up at 6 hp. With the remaining cards, being less than your hand size, you're guaranteed the 160 hit. If you then also draw your Backstab again, with Fumes dealing 5 that should be enough. But you only get 1 shot at drawing the backstab.... It ends up being much worse. I'd say the 5/13 odds you had of winning is the best line I've seen so far (playing just the Neutralize would still leave you 1 damage short of killing it). Fascinating little math puzzle that (as in which strategy gives you the best odds of winning that 1st turn after having played the acrobatics).
Love this type of video
@JoINrbs Yes, boss rewards reset the rare chance to default. Great vid!
Cool video. I too have recently come into a Slay the Spire addiction.
Discovered your channel 4/5 weeks ago. Boight a swich coz my old flatlate showed me slay the spire (and mario maker 2). Only have the remastered of FF7/8/9 and those games. But... The game I play often is slay the spire. I play too fast, you hrlped me to try to brink thinking process, and so, enjoy more the game. Thanks buddy
Skill potion is my favorite emergency button.
Why you are making every decision your making on card selection is WHY we're here. I think you called ot the "Grand Plan" it's why you can kill to the end of nearly every run and unless I see a specific selectiom.of cards in a specific order I can't. So GREAT upload. Thank you for the peak behind the curtain. 10/10
To question about if getting a rare card from a boss room resets the chance of getting better cards: it does. Also worth noting that the chance of getting better cards only goes up when you get a common card, uncommon cards don't effect the odds. For anyone who wants to check my work, look at the AbstractDungeon class, the method is getRewardCards(). Monster rooms, Elite rooms, and Boss rooms all calculate probability differently with the getCardRarity(int roll) method but they all do the same thing with that result.
Thank you for your effort
This vid is perfect on 1.5 speed. I really am in awe of how slow and controlled you can speak. I smoke 2 grams of weed a day and I still cant do that lmfao

0-cost Well-Laid Plans seems crazy in today's economy.
starting with a triple bird fight after a weak act 1 has ended my runs enough times that I tend to call it my number one run killer. I have to admit, you pretty well optimized what was a very very sucky run as far as cards and relics goes. I learned quite a bit.

Small thing (that wouldn't have changed the outcome). In the stabbo book fight, you said that if you phantasmal + defense, then you would be 1 damage off with skewer + backstab. 4*40+11=171, however backstab would've also been doubled, so you would've had 182 damage instead. Could've saved you 5 HP. Overall, love the overexplained coming back!

It would have changed the outcome, but only by a tiny margin. 5 extra hp would mean that in the very last turn Tori would have gone off and he'd live with 4hp. Not that that's hugely game changing for this run, it still would have been tough to win the fight, but I love how these tiny things add up in StS.
I watched this video and finally beat the heart on my first try after!
The number of runs I've lost to hyper beam....feelsbadman. Great video, though! Your analysis vids have got me through A8, and I'm still climbing!

I can't remember the order you got your cards but having more 0 cost attack cards would have been great. Energy goes towards defense / setup. Zero cost attacks for pin nib setup. Great video learned alot
@xybarra3702
4 жыл бұрын
He had solid damage though, and he had 4 energy but low card draw at the end which is a bad time for 0 energy cards because they don't make use of the extra energy, so they get in the way of cards that can take advantage of his 4 energy in his tiny 3 card hand. He just needed better mitigation cards like he mentioned, piercing scream and other cards like that could've saved the run just by dropping the damage of those multi-hit attacks way down. It could've saved him a lot of health in his book of stabbing fight which would've allowed him to survive hyper beam and then he could've probably managed to bring a lot of damage together with pen nib, phantasmal, and skewer. More attack was really never the issue
I don't think he's gonna get the speedrun achievement this run
Small shame you got so few events in 1st floor. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the more common events in floor 1 like the garbage disposal one where you pay life for a relic and the double upgrade for life.
TLDR - Employed new systems and meathods learned in this video and took down my first full clear on Silent Unlocked the Watcher. Ive done it!! IVE DONE IT!! I put 637 dmg up against the heart and full cleared. But I did it with cards that were so far outside of my norm. They weren't the "Standard Hands" I'm used to running. Ill be honest it felt VERY uncomfortable, I had to play much slower as well.. I had to think about each card that i took, when to play it. Why I took it and there was specific order then when they were played in I was able to climb through a 28 card deck with Silent, cause I had a lot of discards and draw cards, I was able to discard one every time out of the gate, and I had a few cards that would grant me more energy if I discarded and do a sizable amount of dmg I think 14 er so, but each card had a purpose. Then I noticed a couple cards I would get that would give me bonuses for playing more then 5 in a round I also drew a card and upgraded it with the ability to grab a Potion for free after upgraded. It felt good cause I used what was given to me and took my time and drew the deck with purpose. Sometimes having to choose over cards that were trigger cards for me too. (Cards that I'm used to ALWAYS taking cause I just thought they were stronger.) But they didnt fit what I was building. The Feeling I got when I completed this time was better then anything I've felt before because I employed the systems I learned here. The game felt like I was playing with purpose and using what I was being given in a way that felt as efficient as I could manage. Holy crap that was a great experience. Thanks for this video, its changed the way I look at the game.. Literally.
Don't worry guys, he removes the spreadsheet after 2 fights... all good
Yo leets gooooo silent overexplained
Interestingly, resetting the store at around 2:20:00 changed the potions and allowed to buy the energy potion
Your lvl 15 overexplain helped me beat act 4 on Ascension with silent, thanks! That said any chance you would share that spreadsheet?
Around 40:00 The right word for "consistency" is card advantage. At least that's how I learnt it. Even though the term advantage is dubious since the opponents doesn't play by the same rules as you. Card advantage is "Having stronger hands", which you achieve by: -: Drawing more -: Manipulating card -: Maximizing your card efficiency -: Weakening the opponent cards (or just the opponent in our case) Well laid plans fits perfectly the category 2, 3 and even 1 to some extent. I would dare put a card like Malaise in card advantage, since it mostly mitigates damage by making your block cards more powerful (or weakening the opponent if you prefer). Edit: I know YOU are perfectly aware of what card advantage is. I am just surprised you didn't name it here.
So the strategy of shivs is just bad vs heart? Or can it still be visible if you also have a lot of block?
1:15:00 is that a snake eating an elephant ?
@Jorbs, has your opinion on hovering kite and well-laid plans changed at all since recent updates have changed their rules?
Can you elaborate more about the end of the run? In the summary you mostly said that the run didn't "offer" good enough solutions. How much affect do you think the misplays in the fights had on the outcome? I understand that ascension 20 is hard (I just beat it for the first time thanks you your channel) enough that sometimes runs can' be decided on the roll of the dices. But I still would be happy to hear your opinion on the subject.
Respect.
I picked this game up fairly recently and was struggling to figure out how to play Silent on even lower ascensions. This video has helped me so much, and I'm progressing slowly but surely through Silent Ascension levels. I still have a lot to learn, but this overexplained has done so much to help me learn how to learn, if that makes sense. Thank you Jorbs!

it's really important to know how to utilise all of silents cards, even the ones that seem bad because shes not like ironclad you need those synergies and combos.
My first thought when I saw the map was "ok let's look at the whale bonuses to see if I'm going elite hunting this game, because: 22:14 " I'm glad it got mentioned at all :P
upgrading neutralize is more than a doubling in power IMO, because the card space required to draw a 2nd neutralize is more impactful than the extra 2 damage from playing 2 unupgraded neutralizes vs 1 upgraded neutralize.
On the book of stabbing fight, I think you took the most likely line to win, but there might be some lines where you miss Skewer but are able to block a lot more on turn 2 where you could survive (esp. with block pot)? All depends on the draw of course, but your like was 5/13 chance. There might have been a more stable line.
I'm gonna watch this video tomorrow when I eat because that takes me around 3 hours anyway. Love this game so much. I just reached 500 hours. What's your favorite class/hero to play?
