Thanks for doing my request, and doing it so well! I like it when you go off on little philosophical tangents. You said you're not sure if this song is memorable and my thought was "Oh maybe that's why I like it so much! Because I keep forgetting what it sounded like so every time I play it, it's new? 😆 Yeah maybe that's it. Just kidding, hehe. This song has a very interesting story in the lyrics, not sure if you want it explained or not? Well, if you want to make your own interpretation of it, stop reading now. . . . It's about a "zombie heart" (Asaf's own words). Lazarus in the bible is a man that is brought back to life. Rock of Lazarus is here the heart. An old, tired, stone cold heart being revived back to life by a miracle - but the heart itself didn't want to be reborn. The same old life again? The heart feels numb, more like a zombie now. The heart is dragging itself forward slowly, going on auto pilot. First bit of the song is why the heart was dead (alone, depressed). The chorus is the heart being reborn ("Wake up! Beat with all the blood and dirt from the start"), with new dreams and goals... The last part is the zombie state ... the heart doesn't want to chase dreams ("your dreams are big, your feet are small - the union perilous") it knows too well that it risks being disappointed and hurt anyway. It doesn't want to do good or even be alive.. ("I'm not your ride.. I'm not your therapist....just blow my head, it would be courteous"). It repeats like an endless tiresome cycle ("cry till you dry, and you die, and they drag you again into light"). Like every time the heart is brought back to life, with new hopes and dreams, it has lost a piece of itself in a previous life. What's left in the end? Will it shatter completely and disappear? I find this little story SO fascinating. It can be applied to many things and stages in our life. Asaf's lyrics are most of the time sad and bleak, but man... can they make you think in completely new ways.

Enjoying this series of musings and gentle discussions as we look into Asaf's art. His delivery brings to mind the vocal styling of Billie Holiday. Exploring that which fascinates you is definitely an artist's journey. I think it's trying to find or express a truth that's revealed as you get deeper in and get rid of the extraneous stuff. Asaf is one who will not be easily revealed.

Hi Izzy! Ren turned me on to this artist. What an unusual voice! Those soaring notes indeed remubd me of Freddie Mercury. Side thought:Ren serms to be drawn to unusual voices, Dirt Miller, even Chinchilla. This song will niw disturb the rest of my day, which is why I don't listen to him more. But he is an artist and poet for sure. ❤

@@IzzyIzenstain Ren shouted out Dirt Miller's song Kansas City and told us to check him out. Changed the path if the man's career! He said he was about to give up. He is ne another shining light. Ren just fid another. Jesse Welles, Fentanyl. Another unusual voice with a message.

I think of Asaf as a Fae Lord who has pierced the veil between worlds to bewitch us because he is an accomplished storyteller with an aura of mystery, as you say. You may wish to check out his live concert at the Acropolis in Greece in 2022 - it is on YT - to get a sense of his personality shining through the performance (too long for a reaction but worth seeing). There is also an interview of him on YT in which he describes when his pet wolf attacked him, injuring him severely, and how he freely admits that the animals actions were entirely his fault for the arrogant assumption that he had domesticated it. He is a super interesting, character, to say the least. Also, when the poem you shared on an earlier reaction becomes a song I'm guessing it will be named "Infinity", right? 😉

I love Asaf's artistry, and I'm grateful to have been sent his way by Ren's recommendation. I find it necessary to read the lyrics in his descriptions before listening to the song. The Israeli accent is difficult for me to understand.

The day is short, the night is long, your heart is ravenous They say a heart that eats alone, it chokes, it's dangerous But I have lost my appetite, it proved superfluous My blood, it bled the deepest red and then it turned to rust Life is short and death is long my thoughts are nebulous It seems I'm lost inside myself, well, that makes two of us I wish I had the words to say but words are treacherous My guts were spilled, my heart was stilled, but it was Lazarus Wake up, Rock of Lazarus! Wake and turn to heart Beat with all the blood and dirt from the start Your dreams are big, your feet are small, the union perilous You'll walk alone, I'm not your ride onto the precipice I'm occupied in finding shape, I'm not your therapist My blood has bled, just blow my head, it will be courteous My heart is small, your eyes are big, look how they stare at us You're still a cub, but I am old, I'm not anomalous I will grow old, then I'll grow more, then I will turn to dust but yet my heart beats like the start, for it is Lazarus Wake up! Rock of Lazarus Wake and turn to heart Beat with all the blood and dirt from the start, from the start Wake up, Rock of Lazarus! Wake and turn to heart Beat with all the blood and dirt from the start HOWL Old hearts rise again HOWL Old hearts rise again HOWL Old hearts rise again HOWL Old hearts rise again Cry till you dry and you die and they'll drag you again into light Asaf is beyond belief - His poetry is incredible and I could and DO listen to him everyday. There is so much to learn from him. His voice is so unique and I never tire of it. His vocal range is crazy. As far as I know he does not use auto-tune or any of the pitch perfect crap that EVERYONE else is using now. It is so rare to find someone as talented and honest . His voice is like no one else's. He is multi talented and a beautiful mystery.

At the end of the day, all is he doing is Tom Waites in an opposite voice... maybe your a bit younger, but we older people have heard this 100 times... just singing from a squeaky head voice does not make it good or different.... give you a clue here 40/50 odd years ago kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zqx72M6bdLLTnaw.htmlsi=9-vXwKbh-g-Msdso It's all about substance... not novelty.....

Not sure if you even watched the whole reaction, but Izzy found plenty of other things he thought were good, not just the voice. This song also has a very interesting story in the lyrics, which sparks my imagination and inspires me. For me Tom Waits is too predictable in song structure, and not enough dynamics for my taste. That's why Asaf Avidan's music suits me better. It's got nothing to do with novelty.
