As a country there is very little we are self sufficient at. A combination of 10's of factors but greed and poor work ethic is one of them, people constantly want more money, they make little wins until bang, the industry is too expensive and it moves out the UK. Unionised = end of the industry. Hence why we have no steel industry, no car industry, no ship yards... People are so blind.

@@artureff3046 it's not about being woke. It's about crap food standards. Additives known to cause cancer are still allowed in foods in the US because they were 'grandfathered in' the reason their food is so cheap is because 1. scale, and 2. lack of regualtion.

Isn't the Government busy concentrating on covering over huge tracts of food production land with shoddy, homogenous houses, because 'we need more housing' which is totally at odds with food security, self sufficiency and cutting carbon emissions?

Food and energy security should be top priority for the government But don’t hold your breath .

nice one Harry. It not just DEFRA though. We have governments that think only of today. We have not strategic gas or oil reserves anymore, or food. Its all penny pinching and short termism.

Very interesting. I harvest rice in North East Thailand. The cost of fertilizer has shot up. Many poor farmers can't afford it now. Rice is worth very little here now.

Has anyone noticed how at any given chance prices soar almost instantly and then take forever to come back down to reasonable levels? It is almost a case of extending the chance to fleece the common citizen for as long as possible

Absolutely. The "stickiness" is deliberate and designed to boost margins and therefore profits in price volatility "windows". It's a disgusting practice that should have been banned outright across all key sectors years ago.

I was just thinking that myself. Presumably there are stocks of oil so why charge immediately on the old stocks.what needs to be done is some sort of regulation of oil prices. Countries need to come together and say to the oil producers, no, we will pay this amount and no more. As always with crisis it means for the ultra wealthy it’s another cash cow to make more money. Just look at the massive personal increase in wealth for Bezos with retail restrictions increasing his wealth by billions. This all needs to end. It’s the Americans fault with their ruddy free market thought processes. Trouble is nothing is ever free and it always comes down to joe and Jill average to pay the costs!

One aspect of prices being sticky is the amount of money printing that's gone on. No more boom and bust, just boom and boom (and at some point an almighty reckoning).

Sometimes in the next year or so, as the price of foodstuffs goes through the roof. the lunacy of building numerous newhousing estates on fertile farmland ought to cause us to put a stop to this lunacy. Across every British county thousands of acres have been, and are being turned into huge new housing developments. When will we begin to accept and acknowledge that food production must be the national priority, and that housing developments must be restricted to brownfield sites only.

It’s a world wide issue. We are having the same problem here In Canada. Land is set aside to not be developed called ARL (agricultural reserve land) yet developers are lawyering up and petitioning the governments to remove the ARL status so they can develop on the valuable land.

War and fertiliser prices aside, that fence is beautiful ,lovely thing to see a man do his craft right 👌

I remember this from 70 summers: ‘People are hostile to changes in the landscape (arable) when they have full bellies and are friendly to them when they are short of food, knowing you will be growing food where the hedges were’ It basically said that after ww2 where we had an agricultural boom, the public wasn’t so keen on caring for the environment when they were starving. As soon as the population had a better quality of life and could eat themselves fat, only then did they care about the farmer trying to make bigger and more efficient fields

So I come from a farming family and so these are all accounts from my dad because we packed up before I really got into it and he would receive abuse from drivers, our tractors and implements got hit several times, local ‘caravan dwellers’ setting fires stealing and the sort, abuse from locals for cutting hedges so we could see over them properly, trespass from dog walkers just to name a few. All that stress and frustration to make minimal income and we weren’t even a small farm on bad soil or anything like that and we were not really making an income but yet people have the mindset of rich farmers killing the planet when it couldn’t be further from the truth

Atm in Ireland the Gov wants everyone to start growing wheat and barley.. They must be off there heads if they think farmers who aren't big contractors can afford the diesel/seed and fertilizer to do it. It was proposed that ok you want all of us the start growing crops, we supply the land and you pay for the fert, seed ect.. They went quiet.. Well they have less than a month to make up there minds before its all too late.. My educated guess says, being a govt, they wont come to an agreement in time and we will all end up paying 5 euros for a box of cornflakes in 2 months time...

cant see any dairy farmers ploughing up land .........they drove tillage farmers out of land that they had been renting over the past few years .......so where is the extra tillage land going to come from to grow the extra grain ........i grow enough to feed my livestock and that will be the way i will continue ... little enough out of growing barley already , before all the inputs went crazy ......where are the extra combines going to come from , let alone the extra storage space needed ...................all government propaganda ..!

When this all settles down again, they will be back to doing deals abroad for cereals, Just this time they will offer out a few grants here and there to make it look like they have turned a corner and are supporting there own.. Our government has no idea about food security. As a retired farmer I just cannot understand why productive farmland is being used for housing and, worst of all, new roads. When we're traveling around you see acres of brown field sites laying empty, build on these, and put up with the cost of clearing them, and not productive farm land. How can it be right that some farmers can put acres down to growing TREES ,as a local chap here has done , just for the subsidy, and don't get me on to solar farms with their total waste of good farmland that should be used for edible crops. I know some farmers will not like what I've said but our job is not only to look after the countryside but to supply food. God help us if the countries that we've become reliant on stop supplying us, just think about it.

You honestly can't understand why houses might need to be built? The UK has a steadily growing population. Where will people live? It's never going to be possible for the UK to produce enough food to feed itself unless you cull a third of the population.

There are bigger problems than feeding our population, like the planet that we live on dying. We’ve already destroyed most of the habitats for other species, it’s about time we put them over us. We need to reduce our population, live sustainably, and stop thinking that the bees and birds will always be around no matter how much we rape the land for everything it can give.

We simply cannot produce surplus food when we have 68 million mouths to feed.

I have submitted a Freedom of Information Act Request to DEFRA asking on what basis and what evidence was used by George Eustice in his claim that we don't need any artificial fertilizer as there is sufficient muck and digestate available within the UK. Another point I think they may have overlooked is the cost of hauling muck from mainly livestock areas to arable areas!!

Well done Jeremy, I admire your ability to act. For 10 years now I have reacted to every ongoing application to build on grade 1 arable land in my village, sadly they are 'steam rollering' ahead with x2 large housing developments and all false promises made. Plenty of local brownfield sites have been overlooked. Sad thing indeed!

The UK Government need to put a complete stop to allowing Councils to allow developers permission to build on farm land. This practice needs outlawed very quickly.

The government tell them they have to gave plenty of land ready to build on , we need to go back to a population of 56 million tops not 76 as we must have. They will tell you 67 that's only what they know about .

The problem with the UK is that tories are corrupt and labour is incompetent. These these two bunch, the whole country is being screwed. Good video … keep it up.

City boys are in love with imported everything, including food, and the fees and commissions associated with the trade deals.

How would you tackle the wildlife population decline without rewilding? What do you do when we’ve killed all the pollinators off? Or do we just ignore that problem till it’s too late to do anything?

They shoukd rewild places where livestock is grasing in my opinion. Pop more trees on the pasture it will reduce flooding, improve humidity in the soil. The cows can wander in between them.

Absolutely agree. We should do everything we can to be self sufficient. We should also start to grow our own veg in our gardens.

I've retired to Vietnam and we grow greens, and lots of different fruits, some are so prolific it's embarrassing, during C19 lockdown my wife was allowed to shop in the village one morning per week. To keep us in veg we swapped our fruit with neighbors and not only were we well fed, we met lots of new friends, yes we couldn't recognize them because of masks. Foodstuffs were washed at the gate using rubber gloves and lots of spray. Whether we were lucky or our safety method worked. who knows but were here. Neighbors still come by and I've started a Pick your own scheme, in exchange for a few beers. But no beers until thieve finished climbing ladders.

I know about farming, and gardening, without a third of an acre of garden, it is not possible to grow anything like enough food. Wheat cannot be grown, so you still need to buy bread, butter, cheese, beef, pork, lamb.

@@ladygardener100 in a crisis like WW II growing your own veg was essential for survival. The Ministry of Food advised everyone who had a garden to grow their own. You might not have meat etc but a harvest of root and other veg can make the difference between survival and starvation. Surely thats worth doing? Meat etc was rationed and it is not essential to basic survival if you can supplement it with home grown veg.

Thanks Harry, another great video that highlights the difficulties faced by our farming community. Successive governments have not focused on food security and it takes a tragic event like the Russian invasion of Ukraine and/or the pandemic to highlight the risks. Thanks for adding this into your narrative…… only thing missing was a bit of Stanley….!

Grow trees on the 'rough upland areas' never on arable fields. As a Cornish farmer Eustace should know what to do.

Pigeons are always a nuisance. Just when you think they have missed you, down they come in huge numbers. They do so much damage in a very short time. Your wheat looks good though. The estate fencing is wonderful. Such a clever and talented man, but I don’t envy the painting!

Maybe we should be growing more food and not building more houses on farm land.

Very interesting, very elegant fence and craftmanship. Agree food for the country is critical.

Harry, The local temple to us has sent a container of donated clothes, I though it would be the throw outs but no people went out and bought new, kids clothes bundles include a toy and some sweets. They did the same thing for flood victims at home and escorted the trucks right to the people in need. The compassion here is wonderful and to think the world was worried about North Vietnam.

Brexit, Covid, War, reduction in farm land...will we ever see an end to all this? I really fear a major global collapse is looming as we, the people, simply cannot sustain this ever increasing cost of living.

I quite agree with your stance on things Harry the farmland needs to be farmed not re-wilded. I don't see many of the government members with large houses dedicating areas of their huge estates to be used for tree planting or wild flower meadows.

Surely if grain prices go up, Harry will get even richer!

Let's hope DEFRA and the whole Government in fact, actually take notice of this wake up call and not hit the snooze button as usual. We've just got to make better use of our arable land and, at least, cut back our dependency on foreign produce. Well, what can you say about the Ukranian farmers. If that isn't bravery I don't know what is. They obviously realise nature waits for no one and turning tail and running isn't an option.

The new gate and fence look beautiful but been hung backwards. The latch-side and the hinge-side should be reversed so that the brace extends upwards and outwards from the bottom hinge.

That’s what I was thinking! Shoot them and eat them. Pigeon breasts are a real delicious. Also gets rid of them rather than just move them temporarily to another field.

I wish that this sort of information was more mainstream - part of a more honest and complete news article, as I am sure a lot of people see the price of grains going up and think framers are going to "make hay while the sun shines" if you pardon the pun, where as in reality your farming costs (fertiliser etc) are going up exponentially so if anything farmers are worse off not better. Nice one Harry another great video explaining to the general public who are interested how our custodians of the land face different situations and government legislation which a brick wall tends to spring up causing simple operations to be slowed down and impossible methods to be adered to.our farmers need to be supported more for basic need FOOD !!!!!!!

I previously mentioned in comments, that I can still identify many acres of farmland in Somerset that grew corn during ww2. Since then they have all remained fallow or in use for horseyculture. Of course those were the days of binders and thrashing machines and smaller gates for access.The dairy cows have disappeared and few sheep evident. But who can deny that suitable land that can be identified for cereal production should not be brought back into use and fast.

Hello folks, why did they not Galvanise the steel before the instalation , also the welds will start to rust , it will be a long and tiresome painting job now , and the posts are not cattle proof,

Keep the farm going - city people don't really understand the work it takes to get their loaf of bread!!

Thanks Harry for sharing this channel. I find that following your progress gives an amazing insight into modern farming. Farmers have had to become economic and financial experts. This Ukranian war is nothing but bad for the world and needs to stop. One can't imagine how Russia can end up profiting from what they are doing.

When will our government learn, if not now, then probably never! We must become self sufficient (or as near as possible) in food and energy. Farming is key, and sacrificing good land to development (housing, roads, warehousing, HS2 etc) and daft solar farms is utterly ridiculous. Especially when thousands of acres of warehouse roofs have no panels on! We really should be eating more locally and seasonally, supporting our farming industry. Much more environmentally friendly to do this than import such huge quantities. Love the fencing, real craftsmanship. Not sure if people realise how much farmers contribute to the look of the rural environment!
