As Trump gains momentum, Europe braces for a future without its most powerful ally I DW News

The so-called Super-Tuesday has made a November re-match between Donald Trump and Joe Biden almost inevitable. Voters cast ballots in 16 states and one overseas territory. With no substantial opposition in his Democratic Party, Biden's string of victories was a virtual certainty. Trump's wins helped cement his overwhelming dominance over his one remaining Republican challenger.
With another set of Trump primary victories, the likelihood of a second Donald Trump presidency looms large. That's made European leaders nervous - and vigilant. The possibility of a return to an 'America first' policy in Washington and even the lack of support for NATO has forced officials on the continent to prep for a future without their most powerful ally.

Europe should never have been reliant on the USA for anything. Europe should be able to stand on its own, the fact that we can't is embarrassing. We should be energy independent and able to defend ourselves.

He's not necessarily wrong, he's just an opportunist twisting and omitting facts, such as that spending has been on the rise since 2014, and that the 2% goal only comes into force in September this year. More importantly, European defense spending last year was $350bn, compared to Russia's $100bn; how much more is actually needed to defend against one country that since two years has been struggling in Ukraine, and is projected to have lost 100% of its MBTs and IFVs by next year if their losses continue at the current rate? The most hypocritical is of course that Trump acts as if US defense spending would be much lower if the Euros would pull their weight, with more dollars left for American taxpayers, when it was his own party that kept pushing the US' military budget to its current ridiculously inflated level, more than twice above NATO's guideline due to the influence of the military-industrial budget. Famously, Congress kept buying tanks the Army didn't even want -- they just went straight to the depots. This is helping no-one but some General Dynamics execs and Republican politicians receiving "donations".

hmm there are several flaws and errors in your chain of thought.. the patent one is comparing $350b to $100B. That is a first of all a fiat currency .. not really relevant to war. Russia has a nuclear arsenal bigger than all NATO countries combined. An active army that is bigger than the US... the second part "has been struggling in Ukraine " there is only a crew of 600K or so russian soldiers there..The russian objective is to grind the ukrainians down (and Europeans).. trust my on this if they wanted to finish the war they would have blown of those 7 bridges that connects western and eastern part of ukraine..@@ddshiranui

It's not about that. America CAN focus on itself while maintaining NATO. Trump and many Americans act like NATO is a burden on America. it isn't. NATO is a mutual defense treaty, not an "America defends Europe" treaty. Guess when the only time article 5 of the treaty was activated. It was on 9/11, and all of NATO came to the aid of the US. Keep in mind that at that point, no one knew where the attack came from but NATO was ready to defend the US from any foreign attack. Do you know what keeps American pockets stuffed with dollar bills? American dominance backed by the largest and most powerful military alliance in world history. @@prosimulate It is very naive to think, that the average joe's opinion matters in global politics. I know that people vote for the candidate who promises the most, but to be reasonable, I doubt that the common people see through politics. Let alone global politics. So you can interview people on how to make a fantastic turbo engine, but apart from the engineers, everybody's opinion is false. This is how the world works. Mankind cannot unite, while it is occupied with fighting one another, and it is the rule of the universe, that the strong will survive. In our case, the most witful, and adaptable. Reversing course, pulling out of NATO, and being what the U.S was before WW2 (with isolationist driven policies) would be catastrophic. Being the “leader of the free world” isn’t a favor we confer upon other countries. It’s what actually puts America first. Yeah besides the border issue which is huge and due to Biden ripping away border laws made by Trump in retaliation. Billions of our tax payer money is sent out to protect a none NATO country half way across the world causing national debt taht further increases inflation rates. Sending money will not eventually let Ukriane beat the moutian that is Russia. We either stop the funding or send all our troops. There is no half assing it by just sending the smaller country our money. I don't see the USA any time soon sending our military to strike on behalf of Ukraine. So now we are just stalling for a loss and now billions in debt for forgien affiars. With the societal infustruture of America at a all time low. It would be the perfect time to attack America at that point rather than if we took the "isolationist"/"America first" approach it would produce better results for people of the states. I promise as a Repulican that if a actual NATO country were to be attack even Trump would not isolate. You need to see through the BS that this is a tactic to get EU to not be dependant.
