As Hurricane Florence approaches, some residents are refusing to leave
North Carolina's Outer Banks are expected to see the worst of Hurricane Florence, with storm surges predicted to hit 13 feet. CBS News correspondent Mark Strassmann spoke to one resident who decided to go against mandatory evacuation orders.

Honestly, that old guy behind the wheel of a car is probably more dangerous than the hurricane
It's sad when there are people who can't evacuate (because they're disabled/in hospitals/etc) while people who are perfectly capable of evacuating simply choose not to. And both are going to need supplies to be rescued.
It's not that I would ever want someone to die, but I'm just saying that if someone dies because they refused to leave despite several warnings, then I just don't feel that bad.
sad af I live in redding where we just dealt with the carr fire. an old man refused to evacuate here then killed himself when the fire was nearing his house..

Blame capitalism
Unfortunately, there is no cure for stupid...
A big reason people stay put is- There have been millions of cases of people leaving, and then the authorities stopping them from going back home for many days after the storm. The people want to see if there was any damage, looting, and just settle back in their homes and start making repairs if needed... A really dumb policy.
I am literally going to throw myself into it. class was cancelled for this
Well if it's the outer banks then the emergencies should not allow ANY rescue people out there till all other matters are secured. No sense putting the rescue people in harms way over someone who refused to evacuate.
Anyone who chooses to stay on a barrier island when a hurricane coming is a fool or has a death wish.

Linda Wright My dad lives on OBX island since he was born I’m pretty sure he knows what he’s doing during a hurricane and I do too. Literally my entire family lives down there so I agree with you they are idiots but they are damn smart too.
as someone who lives in Louisiana and was in new Orleans when Katrina hit...You should get out now as fast as you can you can replace your house and condiments you can't replace your family members
It's amazing, looking at those beach houses, knowing.... just knowing there's a chance a straw might make its way out of a house into the ocean - beautiful human irony
"I know youre on his porch now" Lmfao.
He’s right by the coast too... I hope he’ll be okay
If you build a home on the beach make sure you build it out of concrete pillars. Build a concrete home on top of the pillars like the guy did in Florida. His home has stood against SEVERAL hurricanes and no damage.

When you live in Eastern NC, hurricanes are part of life. He's in northern OBX. Storm's hitting south. 70+ years old, he knows the risk a damn sight better than you, pissant. Fyi, natural selection doesn't mean much over 70 years old, he's likely already reproduced and probably isn't having any more kids. Learn the insult before usage.

i can relate, i just came into Va from NC last night. it'd be stupid to stay but a part of me wants to stay and fight for what i have or at least be with it when its gone. its the life i made for myself. but at the same time, i understand the futility would frustrate me, and being out of town and safe is best. my heart goes out. i hope everything works out for him.
Just ask those who stayed in the Florida Keys. Until they needed to be rescued.
The old guy has a death wish. His attitude might make some sense (not really) if he were a mile or two (or ten) inland, but he's right on the fricking beach with no dunes. The water's edge when this report was made was only 20 feet from his house. Shame he's not going to live to see 72.
Florence is now a Cat. 1... BOOOOO!
leave your house... evacuate... NO.. i wanna stay here.. that way if i do get stranded or hurt for being stubborn ill occupy the time of rescue teams and doctors that could be helping someone that really needed it... someone that didnt have the option of a choice to leave...xb also my stubbornness to stay may just endanger the life of a rescue person who may have to end up saving me due to my stubbornness... xb
If the old man has made peace with himself let him be.
A real Man. He's following his principles even though it could cost him the remainder of his life. I didn't hear him say he wanted to be rescued. And, his choice does not make him stupid, or suicidal. He's been around a while, I think he knows what he's doing.

They let their master, the Television, get them anxious and worked up. Just like with politics.
get rid of this nwo reporter before we do.
I have actually been through 2 hurricanes. One was Celia that hit Corpus Christi, Texas in 1970. I was going to be a Freshman in High School that year. They are quite an event to go through. But if you're roof stays on, (and ours did) it is not a huge issue. But they are VERY loud. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Celia My sister who was a year younger than me, was scared to death, (OK, we all were) so she went to her room to lay down. She laid down with her arm stretched out and resting her head on it. She could feel the wall, then she couldn't, then she could, then she couldn't. Point to remember. Houses breathe like an accordion during hurricanes. If they are not well built, they will blow down the street. We had a neighbor across the street, that could stand at his door with it opened until the eye passed by and the winds changed directions. He was standing there watching things fly when all the sudden a garage from around the corner, flew over our house and landed in the front yard of our next door neighbor. He tossed his cigarette and went inside. That was enough to scare him to the bone and stop his heart. Our family had no idea until the storm had gone. So, the smart thing to do is board up your house and go further south and west of the projected path. It's not such a big deal if you are smart about it.
Since hurracaine Maria. People got smarter.

There should be the ability to declare martial law to force evacuate these people BEFORE any one has to risk their lives to save them. Only problem is such a law would probably end up being misused and some nuts would probably put up a fight with anyone trying to make them leave their homes.
@blazereho811
5 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure they can't do that. For Katrina, we went into martial law after mandatory evacuation. With mandatory evacuation, that means you HAVE to evacuate and if you don't then there will be no assured help if you're in danger. They need martial law bc of all the looting that'll probably happen though
@datmeme8967
5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I know they can't preemptively do it, that's why I said "there should be the ability" implying that there currently isn't the ability. It's just bad that people choose to stay, putting many other people at risk if things get tragic.

Understatement of the year
When a man can choose to stay where he's at despite danger and risk it's called 'Freedom.' Letting a man do this without condemning him is called 'minding your own business.' It's the whole premise of our country and our society. What is wrong with you people?
