As Good As You Remember?|Dreamcast Arcade Stick

Ойын-сауық

Back in 1999 high quality arcade sticks were RARE but Dreamcast brought the quality of arcade games to the home console market and with it came this legendary arcade stick! Yes, it's 20 years old so the parts won't feel like they did in 1999, but parts aside, is this the right shape and feel for a stick you't want to use in a tournament? Let's have a look at the classic "Green Goblin".
What do you think? Are the size, weight, layout, VMU feature and form factor what you're looking for in an arcade stick? Comment below and let me know!

This stick truly brought the arcade home for me. I'm lucky that my city had a decent arcade presence (thanks in part to many Hong Kong businesses). I first laid eyes on this stick when my friend bought it to play SF3 Double Impact. 2 years later I ordered 2 of these from eBay. Then MAS sticks were the all the rage for MVC2, which I purchased 2. Then I sold these Agetech sticks back on ebay for $100 a piece as I started to feel the difference between "pro" buttons/sticks. Today I'm using Mad Catz fight sticks with MC Cthulhu installed with an RJ-45 along with Brooks brand converters (PS4, Neo Geo AES, Switch, etc.). I'll never forget that these Agetec sticks showed that it was possible to have quality arcade experience at home.

For 4Player Matches Virtua Tennis it was ok, but the Sticks were loose and the buttons wont come back up sometimes since "new" specially when you not hitting the exact middle of the button. Then i put them in Storage for a very long time. Now 20 years later i saw your Fightstick Videos and modded 2 of them with Sanwa JLF and Sanwa Buttons. For the other two i have Seimitsu Parts on order so ican compare which i like best. The adapter even has built-in VMU (Without the screen of course, but you can save stuff) It works great on my PS4 Hori Fighting Edge, but I plan to replace it's PCB with the Brook Universal but I assume it'll work on it as well for obvious reasons lol ALTHOUGH for novelty reasons, I wouldn't mind getting an OEM Dreamcast fight stick.

So, just FYI, Agetec was an American spin-off of the Japanese ASCII corporation. Similar to the original ASCII US operations, they were a neat little company that specialized in bringing lesser known titles (and probably the first to bring budget console games) to the US market mainly during the late 90’s and early 2000’s. Additionally, they release several special controllers. Considering ASCII largely kickstarted arcade-quality controllers at home in Japan with the ASCII Stick for Famicom & MSX/X68000 (with miniature Seimitsu parts!), it makes sense that Agetec continued the tradition into the DC era, though their OEM parts were no longer from the higher quality arcade brands.

The Dreamcast Agetec Joystick is probably among my favourite sticks. (Maybe my favourite stick of all , but I haven't used it in over a decade , so I can't be sure) It has things that I can't really find on most modern sticks. 1 - There is a alot of horizontal space in between the stick and the buttons. Most modern fight sticks have the lever and buttons very close to eachother and huge gaps of unused space on either side, for no real purpose. (I don't really rest my hands there , I rest them on lower part of the stick , which leads me to my next point ) Use that unused space and make the gap between stick and buttons a little wider , to release that shoulder tension a little) 2. Alot of vertical space to rest your right palm on. Some modern fight sticks give you not enough space , just enough sapce or slightly more than enough space for your lower palms to rest on . The dreamcast stick gives your more than enough space to rest your lower palms on !!!! The dreamcast layout moves the buttons all the way to the top of the stick , because it knows it's important to give your lower right palm alot of space to rest on. Modern fight sticks want to keep everything centered for some reason. The Dreamcast doesn't care , it knows there is nothing of importance above the lever and buttons. So it just pushes the layout almost all the way up. Yeah I know nowadays modern consoles have more buttons and we gotta put them somewhere. 3. Six button layout is preferably to me. (I'm pretty sure most true arcade players prefer this too , but have just accepted that most modern fight sticks made for home consoles seem to be 8 button standard) Most modern retail fight sticks will have 8 face buttons , but almost no fighting games have use for the 7th and 8th button. To me the 7th and 8th buttons are just a waste of space , even deteriment to gameplay , if you accidently press then. They're not even present on arcade machines themselves , they're only there because home consoles controllers have more buttons. If you're a stick player , you really should be pressing button combinations for stuff like supers/throws , because that's one of the main advantages of a stick. It's now much easier to do so , because the layout makes more sense , since that's the way it should be played. Doing those kind of moves with finger combinations feel more natural on stick. Since you're not using the pad , there's no need for macro buttons. (Plus your hand probably isn't wide enough to accomodate the 7th/8th button comfortably) It also contributes more to the not enough spacing between the stick and buttons issue again. But yeah , if any fight stick manufacturer made a fight stick based on the Dreamcast layout more , that would automatically become my new favourite modern stick for the reasons I gave above. Sega really need to get on this , make a deal with either Hori, Qanba or Razor. The Saturn stick layout was similar idealogy too , but not as well made.

Totally agreed, nice description ! Spacing and palmrest of this enclosure is a godsend. Weak point: the stick, a cheap sanwa (the long throw maybe good only for VF) clone. The 8 button layout of newer enclosures can be useful for KOF (1,2,3,4 in straight line) some rare japanese cabinet have 7 button layout and the 7th button is an auxiliary 4th button.

Hmm, if you happen to have one of those laptop lap desks it could probably work since they have a built-in beanbag on the bottom to mould itself to the shape of your legs for stability. And then those 4 padded feet on the stick will have a flat surface to grip on to. It'll probably be good for most small form factor sticks.

Agetec was a division of Ascii Corp. who also made the Super Famicom/ SNES "Super Advantage" under their "Asciiware" brand name. This Sega licensed arcade stick was an excellent stick for that time and still is to me. I enjoy it very much. Back in the day this was one of the best official arcade sticks that you could buy, but these days I play this game with a Brook converter. I use a Brook converter on Dreamcast and PS2 as well as Genesis / PC Engine, and can reuse my PS4 sticks anywhere. I agree that Qanba Drone is a better option. I have used it with this game on both DC and PS2. With a Brook adapter, you can often save and load from slots 2-4, but for those games that can't the Brook Dreamcast converter does have a little bit of built in memory. Prices for this stick in the USA are like 2-3x what they are in Japan. It's not a good option at all. This is one of my favorite old school fighters. I love SNK and 2D Capcom fighters.

Hello Nihongo! You fellow Mexican follower here wanting to help lol. The green goblin is a good stick, but if you want a better stick to use, there is actually adapters for the DC, A LOT of them! You can use the Brook Adapter and use even the Victrix! The cable you have is actually ok for a quick solution, honestly, I wouldn't buy another VGA solution unleast you are going to use a legit CRT VGA Monitor, the better solution for HDMI is called DCHDMI and is... really for DC enthusiasts or for event use, to be honest. Lastly, DC doesn't have copy-protect as of now, so, if you want to try a game without wasting THAT much money first, you can burn a .cdi ISO and try the game, or maybe try the Homebrew tools!. Lastly, get Psychic Force 2012, one of the cheaper Fighting ones and actually, one of my favorites haha.

It’s not that noticeable actually. But the tests I’ve seen in videos seems to confirm the lag is there. The “ps2 to hdmi” adapter is straight component signal digitising so it might be lag-free (tho haven’t seen conclusive tests yet). The CVS2 pro players seem to happy with it

The stick is like 20 years old, of course it doesn't feel amazing. As for the holes, 28mm sounds good to me. Looks just big enough for IL short-stem buttons. Also, why not have your stick on a table? I hate using sticks on my lap.
