Arundhati Roy: The Ministry of Utmost Happiness

When Arundhati Roy’s debut novel, The God of Small Things, was published in 1997, it was awarded the prestigious Booker Prize, became an international bestseller, and is now considered a classic of modern literature. Roy comes to CHF to discuss her richly moving second novel, The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, which transports us across a subcontinent on a journey of many years. Humane and sensuous, beautifully told, this extraordinary novel demonstrates on every page the miracle of Arundhati Roy’s storytelling gifts.

Just gone through the book a 3rd time, it's freshness has kept it my bedside. Every single word is like a note of music, every expression carrying with it a sea of emotions. Thank you for giving me something to think about.

Esp when she gives the account of Anjum like character, is very fine and commendable attempt. In addition to it, she gives many recent accounts of contemporary India where some unimaginable happenings are around us.

Am reading the book now and it is such a rewarding experience. I am not a wordsmith like the author, so I cannot express fully what I am feeling. Just suffice to say that we are lucky to have a brave , original, fresh and deeply insightful author like her in our midst. Your writing wakes me up and enriches my experience of life. Eagerly waiting for your next .

She sure is a terrific writer. But for those of you who think that she only writes novels, you're in for a treat! She has written and acted in a movie called "In which Annie Gives It Those Ones" back in 1989! It's a must watch for all her fans ❤️

Totally agree Arundhati Maam, India is still colonised, the world misreferences it sadly, thankyou for referencing about the Sikh genocide Delhi, Punjab, though official figure was 1 a minute to 3000 however I know as a Sikh also following human rights, I am aware, the actual figure was insane, estimated overall we would say half to .7 million Sikhs were cleansed. Kashmir is enduring very much right now... it is almost criminal that we are safely sat back whilst it occurs. The current narrative of India, its State sponsored media is non stop indoctrinating the Khalistan concoction, invoking hate divide against Sikhs. Where are we heading Arundhati, ???? surely a 2nd cleansing , genocide of Sikhs in this age of communication, cannot be, surely it cannot be allowed. ? Surely that applies to Kashmir too.. else who are we... all.

I am an Indian. A society which silences its authors is going into wrong direction. The fact that she is giving her opnions without getting killed is the beauty of democractic India. Try to criticize Islam like Taslima Nasreen from Bangladesh, then you knows what happens. She was hunted down by extremist islamic groups in Bangladesh and India where she took refuge.
