Arundhati Roy is a world-renowned Indian author and global justice activist.
From her celebrated Booker-Prize winning novel The God of Small Things, to her prolific output of writing on topics ranging from climate change to war, the perils of free-market development in India, and the defense of the poor, Roy's voice has become indispensable to millions seeking a better world.
In 2002, Arundhati Roy won the Lannan Cultural Freedom Prize.
Arundhati Roy will read from her most recent book, Field Notes on Democracy (bit.ly/YRGoQs), followed by a discussion with Anthony Arnove, editor of Howard Zinn Speaks (bit.ly/Usgxuk).

It is sheer pleasure to listen to Arundhati Roy speak. her eloquence is mesmerizing. She gives us hope that intellectuals like her are alive and the poor and dispossessed have someone who feels for them and speaks for them. It pains me to read comments criticizing her when all she is talking about is justice for all and respect for human rights.

Hindutwa is funded by World Banks as a super capitalist party which will support their free trade.

Interesting is her ability to convince others as well. But, I was looking at some of the points she mentioned, like RSS. Suddenly it occurred to me that Atal Bihari Vajpayee too was from RSS and there are many other true nationalists. So, we can't really generalize RSS being a Fascist group.

I have always wondered why all activists go separate in their activity of enlightening people. Why shouldn't they stay together (inspite of the differences) in their or people's war against forces that are destroying the balance? One laughing at the other isn't giving a good impression. And if the activist chooses to justify the 'laugh' then Gandhi, Nehru, Vallabh, Godse, Modi, Hazare, Kasab, Maoist ... all are humans with different goals and all are welcome here to do their tasks without disturbing the other. Will that be okay? Every activist does something good and we must not forget it. Activists are the epitome of peace-restoration at least they must be united if not physically virtually.

and even as she's speaking there's a man who would like to commodify her voice, for his use. have her singing songs for his abuse. have her putting her work on hold, to support his...help him. because it's easier for women to do it for them, instead of doing it themselves. produce your own art, and don't use women's energy to do it. our creativity is not less important, our thoughts and ideas are not for your sole consumption (you can always tell who's gotten to a woman, by how they stop producing)...like, your partner was an artist. she was finding her voice. where is it now, come out your shell....smh. anyway, check this. it's awesome. spitting truth to power...

There is narrow difference between hippocrates and critics,It is always easy to criticise but very hard to define a solution which works for all (different culture , different ethos) People love to be managed rather than manage themselves. Solution always comes from people itself- iraq, dantewade etc if you leave them you don't care if you care you are hurting their culture :-). certainly loosing side are always more poetic and winners are always savage : This definition comes from journalism/intellectual who are also taught in a particular fashion which they think is always right globally

lots of times, people won't understand you. they may think that the words that empower you to think differently, or that have you saying "yes! that's exactly what i mean!!" are really the opposite. i personally love women who's words speak about how they WON'T be oppressed. by: all forms of capitalist patriarchy. arundhati roy is good for that. telling it like it is. i'm saying "fearless leader" and you think i'm saying "communist low life bitch" lol...i think women deserve BETTER than any form of patriarchy or commodification. and if i can educate them on how to avoid it? as my small contribution to the globe and from my experience? WHILE helping educate the kids...that's what i'll do. work harder, but not to death. i see you. acknowledge you. and love you and your work, arundhati roy. i hope no one stops you from spitting truth to power. she's "not your exotic" either.

The burgess class of slaveowners and global merchants who founded the US gave us a republic that protects the interests of their class almost exclusively. Its democratic philosophy is no model for liberation, despite the brief revolutionary period of the US Civil War and aborted Reconstruction Era that followed. The burgess class in the US and UK maneuvered to fund and create fascism in 1930s Europe. (more)

Well my friend, Kashmir is not a person. Its a mixture of people from multiple religion and races. Many of the Kashmiris do not know what could happen to them if they were declared a separate country. If you don't realise, Kashmir is a vital defence post in central Asia. Do you think just being adults would enable them take such a a vital decision. This is not like buying a property or selecting the right groceries for house hold.

Going through the articles involving Arundhati Roy, I could feel a strange negativity in everything she came across with on the media. Try googling arundhati roy + Janlokpal Bill. She is more of a fiction writer which she is marvelously great at. I don't think she is that good of a politician.

India is a confection of states, ethnicities, religions & cultures. A quilt where each part is unique but nonetheless united by an overarching civilizational thread. If we allow one segment to secede, based on religion, it's sure to set off a chain reaction of fissiparous events. Pak separated based on that same divisive propaganda and look where it got us, and them. A repetition of that same division is sure to wreak misery, blood-letting. Building bridges should be encouraged, right?

Let them decide. over 8000 people die every year in Kashmir and thousands go missing. It is the world's most militarized zone. We spend over Rs 200Cr EVERYDAY in defending that state. This lecture exemplifies AR's hypocrisy. She lambastes the response to the Godhra train burning but then goes on to say "we don't know who set fire to the train". Only hun, we do know. It was proven beyond a shadow of doubt, after thorough investigations, in a court of law, for which 31 people were sentenced, that a Muslim mob set fire to the train, brutally killing innocents. She's conspicuously silent about that but drums up the other side of the story, Sums all that is wrong with her views.

No ,it was not proven without a shadow of a doubt...Stop speaking out of your ass without doing proper research and regurgitating half truths. The Nanavati committee that was formed by Modi held 67 people accountable. 56 of these 67 people were found innocent because of lack of evidence. The Gujarat nanavati committee had to change their story 24 times before they settled on those 11 convicts.

Their thoughts have not continuity & hence no sustenance. She likes to share her experience, on staying with the oppressed, but would never stay to help them. People who are working for the betterment of the oppressed class, trying to bring them in mainstream, she calls them as agent of the government. They want these tribal belt as their pockets for communist activity. It is correct that there are differences between government & tribal people but definitely not an issue of genocide. She uses such word so carefully that it matches her leftist ideas.

This soft headed woman is mindless at times. She reaches for ideals while ignoring the conditions of power and politics and pragmatism.

Ignoring the conditions of power and politics? That is exactly what she speaks to so clearly. What are you talking about? As for pragmatism, what you are saying is that the brutality of empire is somehow practical. Your name implies more awakeness than that.

That's exactly what he's saying. She's soft headed because she dislikes killing. She's not pragmatic because she doesn't embrace politics for power

After reading your comments I also feel that your critical thinking ability is very very bad that you can't understand subtle differences in the understandings of basic concepts...BTW Globalization is a very broad term ... Arundhati Roy is a Global Citizen and hence a globalized person but the anti-globalization campaign that she carries out has a different meaning of globalization...have you studied subjects like political theory, anthropology, sociology... without reading don't comment shit.

She rants against globalization. But she is the most globalized person from India. She gets royalties from multinational publishers and consumes a lot of products produced by multinationals (for example flat screen TV, mobiles, google etc). She is globe setting all the time around the world. But tells common people of India globalization and capitalism is bad for India

She hasn't overlooked the issue. She says it's all a drama. I've seen some of her other interviews. She's bought out pal. All intellectuals can be bought in this commercial age we live in.

Noone can stop Modi. Modi is an idea whose time has come. Modi represents the future of india. Modi represents the best of india. He was born in a poor family and a backward caste. He worked as a child laborer at a train station in india. Today, he is the most popular politician in india and a PM in waiting. Modi is a savior of india....
