Not only Polish music has been shunted into the background to remain forgotten. It is a pleasure to be able to listen to something from such a nice country as Estonia. Artur Lemba is the name to remember!

A great discovery! Thanks so much for posting this. He deserves a greater listening audience. The music stirs the soul.
Wonderful...wonderful... many thanks for this!...
Why on earth don't we hear this fine symphony and more of Lemba's music in our concert halls and on Radio 3? H

Beautiful piece! Now added to my favorites, a growing list you have helped to populate! So many unheralded composers who deserve to be heard that you have brought into at least a portion of the public eye. Thank you.
Thanks for this symphony. A very attractive work with some quirky instrumentation which makes it most enjoyable. I liked the first movement especially.
Quite why this enchanting work isn't in the repertoire of every major symphony orchestra I find very hard to understand.

My suspicion proved correct. I just got word from Kristina Kiis, the music curator at the museum in Talinn that houses the MS score of this symphony that the finale is Moderato assai - Allegro risoluto.
Beautiful symphony and outstanding composer. Thanks for sharing! :)
Very nice - well structured, lovely melodies, interesting instrumentation.
yet another undiscovered gem amongst youtube algorithm! amazing.
FANTASTIC! - even in my favorite Key. I hope to heard this live one day ... if the orchestra's stars to play more than Mozart and Bach that is.

Nice music. Lifts my mood!
The tempo of the Scherzo is Allegro vivace. The Trio is Meno mosso e tranquillo. My thanks again to Mariliis Valkonen at EMIC.
A very nice Andante.
The beginning reminds me of Elgar's 2nd symphony.

yaa, it kept reminding me of someone, now you mention it it could have been Elgar.
This symphony is extremely memorable, I listened to it for the first time a few months ago and put it aside until hearing it again yesterday, most of the themes are recalled almost immediately after the first note being played. magical tbh.
thank you for this music!!!!:)

Aw c'mon-where's the rest of the joke? Nice start, but you can't stop after just writing "goose bumps"?People will be thinking,"Into what?Jeez-what did it bump into?".The frustration will be enormous! So is it okay if I try to finish it for ya?(I'll take the lack of a response as a 'ooh, yes pleez!').Okay then, here we go- "Goose bumps into his mum staggering out of the Belchers Arms."Hey,watch where yer goin'!",cried his mum."Quack quack quackity-quack",said her boy(trying to distract and impress his mother by doing an impression of a duck)."Don't you 'quack quack quackity-quack' ME!",said muvvah, clearly unimpressed with the younger goose's unpolished offerings. And then it was on! BIFF! KA-POW! BLAM!!(unfortunately for our hero, mother was carrying a gun!).Feathers were flying in all directions(along with mum's beer and fags, etc). Then mysteriously, the fight stopped as suddenly as it had started(or maybe that's "then suddenly, the fight stopped as mysteriously as it had started"-your call.).They walked off wing-in-wing together into the sunset, blood dripping from various wounds-but both couldn't have cared less, for they had starred in the comments section of a music video!Something to tell the Grandgeese(if they managed to not wipe each other out before any were born of course!).THE END." See,that wasn't so hard was it.

The main idea of the slow mvt harks back to Rimsky-Korsakov whom there is a good deal of in this work: as well as Tchaikovsky, Glazunov, early Rachmaninov and in the trio of 3rd mvt, Balakirev!

The first movement is Andante - Allegro vivace. I have seen the MS page of the start of the Allegro vivace as sent to me by Mariliis Valkonen of EMIC. The manuscript is at the Estonian Theater and Music Museum. I am, unfortunately, unable to attach a copy of it here.

Hi James, thanks for all your sharing of neglected Romantic work - really helpful. I am trying to get hold of score and parts from EMIC for performance of the Lemba in UK. I'm waiting to hear back from EMIC - just wondered if you had an specific leads (or copies of any manuscript) which could help me? Thanks for the info on tempi too! Best wishes, Tim

marvelous!
Spiritual, sensory and rebellious, music of this composer reveals secret impostures, explores serene pleasures, a world of resurfacing dreams
This is actually his Symphony No. 1. There is a 2nd, in F minor from 1923.
Si gusta Usted de la música selecta, y no ha escuchado esta composición, pues le recomiendo que escuche esta hermosa sinfonía llena de matices musicales. Pedro L. Grijalba Lima - Perú
There is no change in the overall tempo after measure 35. The main body of the movement begins with a change in the metronomic indicator from quarter = 48 to quarter = 108 and the descriptor "all-resoluto", but the title remains Moderato assai.
Evidently the Moderato assai in the 4th movement is also just an introduction. I am making an enquiry to the Museum in Talinn as to the tempo of the movement proper.

James Levee I heard back from the lady at the museum. She initially responded with the metronome markings of the introduction and main body. I explained things more carefully to her and she agreed to get back to me in a couple of days, due to some Estonian holidays.
bery nice. oh...
The opening Andante is unquestionably the slow introduction to an Allegro tempo movement proper, starting at 2:06. Does anybody have the tempo designation of the movement?

100 mph I believe.
A very fine Symphony.
Also, come to think of it, this has a very "traditional" and "old folk song" kind of sound.
The Rimsky-Korsakov inspired First Movement is incredibly beautiful.
It just occurred to me that the descriptor "all-resoluto" might actually be the abbreviation "Allº risoluto" for "Allegro risoluto". I have inquired with Kristina, but unfortunately she seems to be on her extended vacation, so I sent an inquiry to the email I was directed to. Hopefully I will receive an answer soon, including a scan of the transitional measures.

I'm working on getting the tempos for the Scherzo and Trio. Should have done that along with the first movement. Just kick me.
Universal Cerberus asks about the picture. No, it cannot be old Tallinn for Tallinn does not have a large river as shown in the picture. Tallinn's importance during the Hanseatic time was as a safe harbor and a well-protected town. The picture is nevertheless a good choice to accompany Lemba's work.

Thank you for telling me. I'm sorry for the late response. I am wondering where it is. I know Estonia has one large river that also runs through Latvia if I am correct. Oh well, it sure gives off an old time feel.

It can be Tartu (Dorpat, Yuryev), though. On the background you can see the old Tartu observatory building (back, middle-right). The church with the pyramidal tower-top is Tartu Jaani kirik (St.John's). And the church in ruins is the Tartu Toomkirik (Peter-Paul church). The river is Emajõgi.

You need to ask the Estonian Theatre and Music Museum. They have it. Not sure if they're willing to send anyone a copy, whether for free or for a fee; just don't know about intellectual property rights and stuff like that. But making a try never hurts. Worst occurrence is they say "sorry no"
Add this one.
It’s fine although I enjoyed his piano trio much more.
A lovely piece of music but a bit old-fashioned. Of course, Estonia is a bit off the beaten path and a long way from Vienna.
