Thank you for this presentation! I have an observation and a couple questions: Firstly, I noticed that a viewer commented that they used Borax for keeping the insects out. But there is actually a recipe for Casein emulsion that USES Borax! The mixing of borax with the casein makes a really gloopy thick and STRONG mix. I have used it for making Gesso for rigid panels with successful results. I appreciate that you use litmus paper on your mix. With my gesso, I used plaster of paris that I 'slaked' (rinsed in water over and over until it's apparently PH-balanced, which I researched that the ancients did) but didn't use litmus to test it. Generally, I have positive results painting with casein paint on the surface, but every-so-often I have this DEVASTATING problem where shortly after brushing paint on the surface, it flakes up, and off the panel! Not only is the paint that I just brushed flake off, but all the layers that I painted under it flake off. I don't know what causes this but as you can imagine, it's supremely heartbreaking😭 Would you say that this is because I didn't bother to see if my gesso is PH-balanced? It's weird that it only happens in parts of the canvas though. I was also thinking that it may be the pigment it's self may be reacting with thee Casein??? But again it doesn't happen all the time. Thanks for your time and may your projects be satisfying and successful!

Are you using a Casein gesso to prime your canvas? The only time I have seen a reaction like that was when I tried to put Casein paint on a canvas that was primed with a Hyde formula. The pH can be your issue as you suspect. This formula is acid free, it should not react if the canvas pH is off or high. I suspect something up up with your canvas. I don't paint, but as an artist of sorts, I can imagine how devastating this problem is. If anyone has some inisght, please share.

@@GEOsustainable The Gesso was made of my casein/Borax combo with slaked plaster of paris as the whitening. The paint was mixed with the same medium. Another thing: I kept smelling it to make sure it wasn't "off" and it was fine. in fact, the Casein/Borax mixture keeps for months without refrigeration! Next time I tri it out, I'll definitely have Litmus paper handy. It would be great to see a vid by you making this mixture if you're inspired :)

Thymol? Wikipedia gives me: C₁₀H₁₄O.. Ah, it is widely used by beekepers, so I can also buy it in Holland. Nice. I have been using Lysterine and Borax to keep insects out, but this might be cheaper. Paper mache, which I use, attracts ants and boron seems to keep them at bay. For anyone who might like to try that. Also coffee seems to do something for some people, but not with my ants..

Yes, Thymol is the essential oil of the herb Thyme. Thymol is an ingredient in Listerine. I have never tried Borax, but yes, it will work. Thanks for the information, keep it coming, we all benefit when the community comments. Borax is a weak alkali and is used in cleaning as a brightener, and can be used as a fire retardant.

I have a question, I am making the embossing from casein and I don't have the mixing hot plate, but I used my food processor to spin it. But do I still have to wait 24 hours or can I put it on a plate, as soon as it's mixed. Thanx PS OMG using the mixer foamed up the liquid so much it almost exploded out. So for those that want foam, my goodness use a processor. LOL

Yes, I made that foam in a previous video to show that Casein can be used as packing foam. As I said in the video on embossing powder from casein, there is no short cut to the time, it takes a full 24 hours for the polymer chains to form. It actually takes 2 weeks for it to become crystal clear. As Richard Buckminster Fuller said, 'we can only do what nature permits'. You can however, stir it by hand a few times every hour. Just leave it in your processor and give it a spin every now and then.

Thank you, yes I saw the foam comment in your video, but wanted to add to it, by stating the processor really adds tons of foam, thought it would be helpful to your viewers if they wanted a lot of foam action. LOL thanks for the answer about the time. I wasn't sure if the time was for it mixing thoroughly or like you said"chains to form" Love your brilliant mind!

I tell ya I would too, I have it stuck in my brain to make foam peanuts like you said. If I had some extra liquidity I would really look into that venture. With credit all to you naturally. I just think it's a brilliant idea. Maybe we should go on shark tank LOL

My first batch was really good but it didn't dry transparant as on your cardboard but very white and mat. Instead of eggshell I used calciumcarbonate, also a half cup. Do you have any suggestions?

  • @GEOsustainable

Yes, use eggshells. However, the eggshells are not needed if you want smooth and transparent.

I guess in stead of eggshells, seashells might be a more easily obtainable material in larger quantities, or you might plant some lettuce to attract snails. Also I´ve been thinking of human hair as a filler, since it is so easy to come by, your local hairdresser will be happy to get rid of it, since it is waste to them..
