I thought just like you,... a lot of the Sissix die cuts are too "pretty" to use in vintage journals! Really for card making!!! NOT!!! You always think of things no one else thinks of!!! Tim Holtz is LUCKY to have you working with him as a maker!!! You are a "grungy genius"!!! I'd love to take an adventure thru your brain!!! It would be like "riding the rapids" on the river! I always forget you can split the layers of cardstock!!! Waching this little guy go from CUTE to GRUNGY was SO much fun!!! NOW I want to buy some of these die cuts and try your grungy techniques!!! I'm amazed at how GREAT this little guy came out!!! Your videos remind me of Tim Holtz videos cuz you explain how to do techniques and how tools & suppies work!!! I LOVE to understand my tools & supplies so I can get all the benefts they provide. GREAT VIDEO, LUISE!!! Thank you for sharing these unique ideas! Hugs from Austin TX USA

I have the original Tim Holtz texture hammer it has screw on heads and one of them has those round bumpy bits. I'm not sure what they are called but has same dimple texture. Alot of stuff are really old, I have edge distresser used to roughen edges of card or paper it looks like thread cutter. Alternatively you can use scissors. I feel like only person who hasn't got a die cutting machine but may get second hand one in the future. Alot of crafters just darken the edges thry don't do anything fancy. After watching your video it has inspired me to grunge up thinfs like tags, frames, etc. Lately, I have been facing creative slump with junk journaling. You are definitely are queen of grunge. My kind of style because new things eventually becomes old and decayed due entropy.

The problem is that this is still a soldier no matter how grungy and soldiers are a very specific subject matter that does not always fit in a grunge journal. What I saw was the potential to use the various layers separately as objects in, for example, a collage. The individual die cuts have the chance to be something other than a soldier. Even your negative cuts offer great potential as individual elements in mixed media. Not everything has to be a version of the original intended image.

I don’t agree with that, grunge is not Altered Art it just a style of having that dirty look and does not have to even a specific color. Any color can be grunged.

Junk journals come in all styles. They don’t have to be distressed & vintage by any means. It’s just about making something you love & not being bound by “rules” of what something should look like. Vintage & distressed are an interesting trend though, when we live in an era of everything new & almost everything being disposable. Back in the 50’s & 60’s, after the war, most people had to make do with what they had, wear hand me downs, hand-make gifts, & recycle things, like unravelling jumpers to knit something that seems new, or putting ribbons or something onto an old dress to jazz it up. Then as the economies & countries began to recover & technology advanced rapidly, people wanted brand new. And they bought & bought & bought housefuls of new appliances, couches, beds, toys, clothes etc. And then as technology progressed, packaging & freezing methods became more advanced & things were made more cheaply, we stopped fixing things & it became easier & often cheaper to throw things out when they became worn or broke. Advancements in health & the understanding of diseases also affected this & made more things single-use. And gradually, the pendulum has swung in the other direction. We have begun to realise how much damage we’ve done to the world by being a disposable society. We began to value antiques again, & things that had a rich history, but since genuine antiques still cost a lot, people began to make faux antiques by distressing furniture. And that became a whole art movement of collecting & creating vintage & distressed items. Plus we recycle so we made junk journals that can be made of anything & everything. And unlike in centuries gone by, when paper was very expensive & not easy to get & few people could read or write or had time or money for “frivolous” arts or crafts, and had a very rigid rules-based society (for example, where well brought up young ladies were taught to paint landscapes & still lifes, but we’re not allowed to be professional artists) so if they had a journal, it was supposed to be well cared for, include bible texts (or excerpts from whatever religion they followed), be “proper”. But now, we have a much more free society where we can express ourselves freely in art, in journals & in all the other creative media we have access to. So your junk journal can be whatever you want it to be. It can be made from all beautiful handmade papers, or you can dye your papers whatever colour you like & include whatever you want in it. There are no rules. And as you browse YT, you’ll find people who make their journals just the way you like. And you’ll find people like Luise & 49Dragonflies who love distressing things & getting messy. As long as you enjoy watching them & don’t feel pressured to change your style unless you really want to & it makes you happy that’s all that matters. 😊🤗 Happy crafting
