Artist vlog 060: All my sketchbooks + how I use them

I've been practicing daily art for 4 years, and the most important tool in my practice is my sketchbook ❤️ I keep lots of them going all at once... so I thought it would be fun to chat about why, how, and what's next for me and these books!
Thanks again for watching ;D

    I have trouble starting new sketchbooks so I start on page 6 or seven and just pretend I've been using it for awhile, at some point when it doesn't 'feel new' anymore it's easy to go back and doodle around with the first pages. I also have trouble finishing them too. Haven't solved that one yet 😏🥴 I have 4-5 going at once: 1) 'KZread Art School': where I put my notes and practice all the wonderful things I learn from content creators like you, 2) '100 Things': where I draw 100 of the same kinds of things 3) 'Watercolor Practice': trees, leaves, flower petals, textures, landscapes, skies, ocean water beaches 4) 'Notes': on brushes, swatches, color mixing recipes, how to mix a neutral or black, value scales, anatomy proportions 5) Composition Thumbnails: 6) 'Swatches Charts': of all my media supplies, watercolors when mixed with each other, 7) 'Warm Ups': So I don't have to keep hunting for a piece of scrap paper or feel like I'm 'wasting' perfectly good pages in my sketchbook...... etc. etc. etc. .....

    I have multiple sketchbooks in various stages of completion. I choose them for size, paper type and subjects. Yet, I don't have trouble finishing A sketch book or starting A new one either. I started Zentangle in May of 2020 after a lifetime of thinking I could not draw anything. An inner artist has blossomed and my skills have developed to where I am now branching into realistic botanicals and insects. I seem to favor pen and ink so far. I'm 69 years young and telling everyone I know you are never too old to learn A new skill. This is the first of your videos, I've seen and your work is amazing! Like you I practice daily and keep amazing myself at every turn. I also recently overcame my fear of the gutter between sketchbook pages....although it still seems like I'm breaking some unwritten rule...great video and good luck as you continue your journey of discivery. The sky is the limit!

    This is the first video of yours that I’ve seen. I love your variety of sketchbooks and your work is absolutely stunning!! I like the idea of sticking with one at a time but I seem to have a few on the go for different purposes as well (a tiny one to keep in my pocket just in case, one for holidays and my main one for everything else, oh and I did have another which was mostly for Inktober, but that’s full now). I love making my own sketchbooks! Have you made any before? (If not, I’ve got a tutorial on my channel which is clear step by step how to make a cloth covered, hardback, bound sketchbook.)

    Great video! I've been sketchbooking for a couple of years now and started just working through one sketchbook at a time, doing anything and everything in each one. Recently I splurged some birthday gift cash on a bunch of different sketchbooks, all shapes and sized, toned paper etc. Now, like you I have a kind of purpose or style or intent or place for each one. Each one is a new and exciting project that could possibly take me forever to complete, but I don't really care about that. I feel so much more creative opportunity now that I have a range, but I still love my 'anything and everything' sketchbook as a go-to 🙂

    I’m intrigued by your oil painting sketchbook. How do you deal with the slow drying time of oils? Do you have to keep your book open to that page until it dries before you can work on another page? I love painting in oils, and I’d like to find a way that is containable and manageable.

  • @dawntoussaint

    @dawntoussaint

    5 ай бұрын

    Yup, I just leave it open and put it up on a shelf out of the way... it usually takes 3-5 days for the paint to touch dry, then I add a sheet of parchment paper between the pages until it seem safe. I also date stamp the pages when I paint them so I can keep track❤️

    Oh thank-you so much! This enables me to try oil painting again! I had given it up because of the mess it makes in a large space, but in a sketchbook the mess is limited and manageable. I will try this. You just made my day!!!

    I have multiple sketchbooks-most I have made but my husband buys me sketchbooks of all sorts and that is fun because they are generally paper and sizes I wouldn’t pick up so that forces me to go outside my comfort zone. Are your drawings in colored pencil?
