    Great point. And as a bonus, I am using my Studio 2 and it is doing some really great things like heavy 3D modeling and rendering so it definitely muscles through things and you are right...people are bashing it for things that its not designed to do.

    FusionHarry ಠ益ಠ .. you can’t. To get a Cintiq with a screen similar to this, (Cintiq 27qhd or pro 24) is gonna set you back a lone $2k-3k which is the majority/if not all of the money that you’d spend on this. & that’s not even including the stands with them lol. You realistically can’t build a pc similar/same specs if not better than this & with a Cintiq with a similar screen size because only the pro 24 or 27qhd are close enough to this 28” screen

    FusionHarry ಠ益ಠ yea with a Ryzen 7 1700, psu, 1tb ssd, gtx 1060 6gb, 16gb ddr4, motherboard, computer case h500, & Wacom Cintiq Pro 24 (with touch) & the stand it all came to $4,200.79 usd (before tax). *just picked all parts from amazon* & that’s still not including a monitor or mouse or keyboard.. yes you could use the Cintiq as a monitor alternative tho. But me personally I like to have my regular monitor & Cintiq underneath on my desk & use my monitor to look at other things or watch YT vids

    Just got this computer, I've used it for about 3 weeks now. And it is the best computer I've ever had. hands down, its incredible. I've always been an apple user, and I don't miss apples OS at all. And I also own couple of wacom products (companion cintiq 2 & cintiq intuos) and it feels way better when working with the pen, Awesome Product. I think the only negative point is the Sound, its not great. but that's it.

    15:46 that was really cool, I didn't realize you could use this pen with tilt in krita to make those kind of pastel strokes. Thank you for such an in depth review. I think my biggest problem with this is just how massive the screen is, when I use a Wacom tablet I usually use the smallest one. It's hard for me to draw on such a big surface. I really appreciated you touching on palm rejection and the option to wear a glove so your hand can glide freely on the screen at 18:40

    I'm in love. I just wish love wasn't so expensive. Awesome review, Teoh - the best I've seen. Thank you! The Studio 2 is preventing itself from overheating/throttling, which is why you get can't get the full turbo speed. It's a reasonable compromise as you'd experience a yo-yo effect in performance otherwise. To get full turbo performance requires a much bigger cooling system.

    When it comes to the screen it seems to be the Microsoft REALLY thought about individuals who will be using a pen to make their work. It can do some medium to light gaming when you need a break. Good job Microsoft. unfortunately for the price, you could get a Cintiq and a faster desktop computer for less and potentially better performance and repairability when/if it breaks, unlike this which I guess is FAR more difficult and expensive to repair. I think that is super important for many self-employed professionals, we live and die by our tools and to have to replace an entire device because doing so is cheaper than repairing an old one can be annoying, to say the least. Fortunately, I've heard and had nothing but good experiences with Microsoft when it comes to replacing surface products at a Microsoft store.

    I can't wait until I'm able to get the surface studio 2 or any others that end up having before I get it lol I love the way it looks and works the subtle issues like the screen sliding a little from weight or the jitters never bothered me. I have the surface pro 6 and it slides when I put weight on it as well. I never liked it when products stay in one place cause I tend to get aches after a while and I like to be up I the face of the screen anyways. Probably why I got glasses now. What I don't like is when screens are glossy so it looks like I gonna have to look for a matte screen protector and I hate the feel of the surface pen so I bought the Wacom bamboo ink pen instead since I'm used to those.

    @@martymcfly8007That's actually not what this is, though. It's using Microsoft's Windows Ink technology developed originally from acquired N-Trig technology. This, and all of the Surface devices since the Pro 3 have used that tech. The last Surface device to use Wacom tech was the Surface Pro 2. Now, as far as what kind of pen technology it is, it's an active pen with like 4096 levels of pressure and tilt control. If you ever try any of the more recent Surface devices, they currently all use the same pen tech, as well as the same pen. (aside from the Surface Hub. That thing uses something else.)

    it seems pretty amazing...can't wait to get mine....the only thing i wish they upgrade is the glossy screen because it is very reflective and distracting...at this time in technology all screens should be absolutely mate especially for touch screens for graphic design and drawing, also the jitters should be fixed to match the amazing screen specs and different software ...other than that it seems great....thank you for this awesome review...look forward more of your detailed reviews. Thank you for taking the time to share with us!

    Mac and Windows have different keyboard layout for Ctrl, Alt/Option, Start/CMD, so that will take some time to get used to. As long as you use the same software, the files can be opened with the same software with different OS.

    On the surface book, I heard the jitter is a lot worse only when you rest your hand on the screen while drawing, is it like that here? Or is the jitter always there? Cause if it’s not a drawing glove would help a lot...

    If you create work for print, go for the UP series monitors from Dell, or SW series from BenQ for AdobeRGB support. If you create online content, you can just go with the U series from Dell or PD series from BenQ which have 100% sRGB colour support.

    This is an old model now. Generally speaking for desktop computers, I don't really recommend getting all-in-ones. You usually get better devices when they are separate, and at better pricing. I recommend you go with a pen display (e.g. Wacom, Huion, XPPen, etc) and a mini computer (e.g. M1 Mac Mini or other mini Windows PC). They will work the same as this Surface Studio. EXCEPT most pen displays do not support touchscreen so if you need touchscreen you have to find one that does.

    I mean... the price of this at the higher end makes Wacom products look reasonable. honestly wish I had crazy amounts of money to throw around - I'd definitely get this because the design is insanely good. But as I am now, I cannot justify the spending even on the base model.

    godofiron you say that. But after working in tech for nearly 20 years now doing design and development I really only upgrade fully every 4-5 years. I never really find the need to upgrade the CPU, GPU or any internals with incremental upgrades since it ends up simply not worth the cost. But big at the start. That said the problem I see with this system is the resell value in 5 years. I do wish systems like this were more modular. The screen would probably still be good in 5 years, and one could likely get 10 years out of this density screen.

    My partner is an illustrator who doesn't game but wants to upgrade from her 2013 Macbook and a crappy portable mini tablet. With no news about a Surface Studio 3, is it still worth buying this pc in your opinion? I think that the specs are still more than fine for using Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop and other relevant illustration applications but my reservations are that the DDR4 RAM and CPU are underpowered compared with current tech, and the CPU was a dated mobile chip even when the SS2 was first released. It's baffling to me why Microsoft put so much consideration into the excellent touch screen, its hinge, and beautiful form factor, but fell so short with the internal components. What do you think?

  • @teohyc

    @teohyc

    It's best to get the display and computer separately. If your partner really want to draw on touchscreen, consider getting a normal laptop with an iPad.

  • @ArthurSalt

    @ArthurSalt

    @@teohyc Thanks for the quick reply! The reason why she's looking at the Surface Studio is because of the drawing board sized touchscreen monitor that's easy to reposition. To buy another Mac product or comparable PC and a Cintiq Wacom tablet it would cost about the same or more than the SS2. An iPad would be too small for her use case. I was more interested in whether the power of the components in the SS2 would still be viable today for running Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop amd similar program because of the concerns about the dated RAM and CPU. Also do you expect Microsoft to be announcing a third iteration soon?

    @@ArthurSalt Not sure when the Surface Studio 3 will be out, or if it ever will be out. The specs from the SS2 is still fine by today's standards. However, it's better to buy a desktop and the Cintiq separately. You'll get better computer specs for your money.
