Artist Masterclass Secret Loser bass line
This is the bass line I played on the recording of the track that was featured on the 1986 OZZY "Ultimate Sin" album. I re-play the song for you and then discuss some of the techniques that I used in the sections.

You played on a hell of a record Phil, "Ultimate Sin" is my favorite Ozzy solo album!
The bass on secret loser is phenomenal, especially the re introduction after Randy’s drum solo just before the final verse. I’ve always been in awe of that section. I came across the song from the movie The Wraith. As I’m not a rock fan I hope this speaks volumes. Superbly played and thanks for the memories Phil! God bless and best wishes.
Holy shit! why am I just seeing this now? What an AWESOME bass line, the bass solo in the live versions of the song is probably one of my favourites.
Congrats Mr Phil for co writing the hits from that album...true glam masterpieces
You just got a subscriber, I wish more bassists would do this. Thanks so much Phil. I’m a big fan of your playing and love THE ULTIMATE SIN album. The detail you go into is amazing, especially when talking about the alternate vs. down picking differences you do in the same riff during the intro as opposed to the verse.

Youre a legend!
Thanks Phil! One of my favourite bass lines! I love The Ultimate Sin album and specially Secret Loser, you are one of my inspirations to play bass!
Phil, you 're a giant. You're one of our bassist's idols. We have been covering "Secret Loser" for more than a decade. Thank you for this wonderful and useful playthrough by the man himself! All the album (as well as every Ozzy's) features incredible basslines.
Your an awesome musician. Hell yeah!!!!!
I’m so happy you’ve made a channel and are revisiting the songs on Ultimate Sin. Please do Killer of Giants, one of my favorites on the album. Or Shot in the Dark! Ever talk or meet with Jake in recent years? That was an amazing lineup in 86

I love your tone on Ultimate Sin, live on 'The Tube' in 1984. Would love to see you re-create that here.
Your videos are not only informative, but are actually quite relaxing to listen to.
This is the MOST beautiful bass line of all time.
Just discovered this channel and it's like heaven!! Makes me appreciate your already well respected bass playing even more. I know it will not probably happen but if you were to do this for the whole album that would be sooo good.
My favorite Ozzy album. Thank you Phil!
MADE ME APPRECIATE THIS SONG EVEN MORE!!! Awesome!
The always Incomparable Phil Soussan! One of the Best Bass Players on the Planet! Great Time,Great Tone and enough complexity to his lines to push the Song but not step on it! The Ultimate Sin is the best Ozzy Album of all time!

Great bass lines
Great bass playing I also love last in line I met you guys in Illinois once. Shot In the Dark is awesome. There has always been speculation that Bob Daisley wrote this album. And that he was actually the studio bassist. You clearly break that up with these videos.

@@PhilSoussanOfficial yes I've heard your version of Shot In the Dark it's a great song. Try some the songs that I uploaded this. I also read a bob interview this morning. He said he thought the album wasn't any good. I strongly disagree. I love watching you do the bass lines. Do Killer Of Gaint or Never Know Why

@@Blackmountainthunder Well of course Bob is entitled to his opinion, that is his right. I have my criticisms of the record... I wish it had been produced with more diverse sounds on each track for example. I respect Bob greatly - he is a great player and a bassist of great influence to me. We are also friends and stay in touch! I will get to some more of these tracks - as soon as I have time! They do take a lot of set up 🙂 Thanks for watching!

Jake reunion please!!!
Too bad they couldn’t hang together for a follow up album. Love the part where it’s bass and drums and he does that little descending thing before the vocals come in. 4:10

Always loved that part of the song as well. That section of the Secret Loser is one of the most memorable on the Ultimate Sin
@Phil Soussan could we get a video detailing the origin and the bass line for Shot in the Dark. It would be interesting to hear the backstory on this song. I also have a question of sorts. Do you happen to know why Shot in the Dark is 4:26 on the original 1986 release of The Ultimate Sin but was edited down to 4:15 in the 1995 remaster. I just wanted to hear about this track and seeing as you were it's primary author it would be interesting to hear your side of it.

I have no idea about why the time was edited down! Sometimes tracks have to be cut short to make them fit on a compilation, sometimes a "total time" specification has to be met - perhaps that is it? The origin of the bassline...? there were a lot of influences at that time - things I was impressed by; one track was The Pump by Jeff Beck and I started messing around with that eights-feel thing. Fundamentally though, the song was not originated from the bassline but more from the chords against that line. I had been listening to a lot of jazz fusion and particularly Steve Khan and Al Jarreau. Al would often use those descending minor 7th chords against moving bass notes and I was doing that on my piano - the whole thing was written on piano! Cheers!

Phil, I have a major question. What tuning is the song the Ultimate Sin in? I know shot in the dark is tuned with bottom 2 strings up a step and the rest are normal eb tuning. But I have saw people say the ultimate sin is in drop d flat. I didn't know if it was e flat or drop d flat. If you could, please let me know.
@PhilSoussanOfficial

Hi Logan - thank you for the question! The Ultimate Sin was recorded in "Dropped D" tuning but as we were already down a half step I guess that would be Dropped C#"? Either way I would refer to it as "Dropped Db" tuning. On the bass that would be Db-Ab-Db-Gb. Enjoy!! Phil
