Please also thank the engineers who developed the materials and manufactured the knee which replaced your old failing one. In the last 100, all out tangible guaranteed comforts in and inside our homes and hospitals are what they are for they are equipped with the best engineering of the day including MRI, X, rays, ultrasound which see down deeper than any human eye. All the equipment in the surgical theatre is engineered. It is the contribution of both the engineers and the surgeons which brought the standard of life, comforts, and guarantees. It is a pity that most people forget all about the engineering that goes to make a hospital and what comfort the patients get from the engineer's contribution while the patient is in hospital and when he returns home. Perhaps looking at some modern prosthetics one can conclude what engineers are doing to help patients in a direction, be it valves heart operations, knee replacements. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pXyfyLhse9XVdtI.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/X42mlryCk5edgNo.html

I am on week three post op. The first week as described the pain was " I want to die" that no amount of opioids would stop. The pain after wards had subsided enough that I could start doing some of the PT exercises. Week two I would be in tears during every session done twice a day. I start out patient PT next week where I am sure I will be pushed more. From everyone I have spoken to PT rehab is key to satisfactory pain free results. The verdict is out if I would do this again .

I had both of my knees replaced one morning in early 2000 - 21 years ago. Rehab was a bitch, but worth it. IIRC it took six weeks and I was walking and driving without assistance - the first week was spent in a Nursing Home where they could provide me Physical Therapy three times a day - a nurse came and wheeled me down to the PT room. So it's 21 years since the bilateral knee replacements - I had a revision on my left knee about seven years after the implants - I had fallen. The surgery was a piece of cake and the rehab was very easy. If you are to have both knees done at the same time, you need adequate upper body strength to support yourself after the surgery!

@@nisarwrites Its not my opinion ,its my experience ,8 years later and both knees working fine, no pain ,I have Rheumatoid arthritis and Osteoarthritis elsewhere though. I must stress you MUST do the Preop and Postop exercises for a few weeks to strengthen the leg and knee muscles for complete success, you have to support the new knees and surrounding ligaments and tissues whilst they heal. The hospital /clinic will provide you with the exercise information BEFOREHAND, they are not difficult and most can be performed on the bed.. also walking every day and keeping active is important and loosing weight makes a big difference if overweight, so a healthy diet is important too. Its those patients that do not exercise the leg and knee muscles, are overweight ,inactive or fail to walk regularly that will have problems, some easy exercises are to prevent dangerous blood clots after the OP.. on rare occasions there can be an infection after the OP, I had one in the left knee and it was quickly cured with antibiotics. My Ops were done under the wonderful NHS for free in UK but I had paid NHS insurance contributions all my life so it wasn't completely free....we are very lucky to have the NHS in the UK.

I had 4 knee surgeries on my left leg, it was from a rugby injury I got in university. Surgery #5 was a total knee replacement about 2 years ago. I’m so glad that I chose this over suffering. Know my left knee is so superior to my right knee. I’m virtually pain free all the time and life is good again. That said, the pain from the surgery and the post operative physical therapy was just about the most horrible experience of my life. I would not wish that pain upon anyone.

@@Kate-hm7cj I had my left knee done in Dec. 2019. Due to complications with asthma they gave me a spinal block and I was lightly sedated. I woke up feeling as if nothing happened. I won’t lie to you, physio is a bitch but the more you put into it, the better off you will be down the road. Two tips. When they say to elevate the leg, really elevate it. I mean put a bunch of pillows under it and get that leg way up there. Also, rent an icing machine for two months. It is a cooler that takes ice and water and with an electric pump, circulates the cold water around your knee while you wear a fitted wrap. This is an amazing device and worth the rental. Do not be frightened. You do not have to be put out under a general if that is what scares you. The trick with the physio is that you want to be able to bend your knee 90 degrees or better. I was off work December 3rd and back doing light duty the first week of Feb. I was 58 at the time. I can do anything I need to do with no pain. The downside is that there is some nerve damage which makes you feel like you are kneeling on jelly if you try to put pressure on the knee. This gets better in time. There are some numb sections of the knee which feel odd at times, no pain, just feels odd. If I stretch out on the couch for a while and then try to put my leg back down, it feels very stiff for some reason. This goes away quickly though. I just came in from an hour and a half bike ride on my mountain bike. My knee feels great. Get it done, you won’t regret it and you will feel so much better. Make sure you keep on top of the pain management. Take your pain medication even if you don’t feel you need it quite yet. Once the pain sets in, it is hard to overcome it if you wait to take your meds. It has made a huge difference in my life, it will in your as well. All the best.

I'm 60 and I need my knees replaced due to arthritis. My biggest fear is that the surgeon will not be vigilant in his precision while "placing" the replacements and I will be no better off than I am now. I know I sound pessimistic but, I've had bad experiences that have caused me to lose trust and confidence. I've been a dental professional for 30 years and I've given each and every patient my absolute best. When placing veneers, crowns or bridges, my mindset has ALWAYS been that I would never put something in your mouth that I wouldn't put in my mouth or that of someone I love- no matter how long it took me or how badly I may have felt, or how much of a headache I may have had. I've also taught my children that no matter what you are doing, whether it be menial labor or something that requires skill, do it to perfection! Unfortunately, not everyone has that mindset, even when they are supposedly a professional. Hopefully, I can find enough assurance to get this done so that I can live my later days painfree.

I could not bend my knee without pain once I bent it a little. In therapy for months with continued pain and swelling. Now three years later I still can’t bend my knee to a normal position. I am in more pain now then when I started. I would never do it again.

Not all down to lack of physio. I had TKA 5 years ago and post op pain not properly addressed. I did all of the PT as asked. Worse pain than before surgery for at least a year. Saud I would not get other knee done until loss of mobility or pain too bad to walk. Had both as remaining knee suddenly "locked" and would not straighten. Different doctor, better technique with computerized x-rays, gps type of navigation to id bone structures. Less healthy bone removed with this accuracy. True outpatient surgery, and 3 weeks later driving and living on my own in home with stairs.

I have found no issues with stability whatsoever. The only issue is because of the nerve damage, the outside part of the knee has numbness. Kneeling down on the floor feels like you are kneeling on jelly as you can’t feel the surface. You feel as if you are actually kneeling on something that is several inches above the floor which is unnerving and initially painful. It gets better in time.

NimW - all knee implants require removal of your ACL. If you have a cruciate-retaining device implanted, your MCLs and PCL remain intact to support the new artificial knee joint. If you end up with a posterior-stabilized type of prostheses, your PCL and ACL are removed - there's a post in the artificial joint that provides the stability instead.

@@springpamthompson7078 well, technology has advanced I'm sure, I asked this 7 years ago... simply because a specialist told us that knee replacements are generally not for "young" (40-45 years) people. He said they're a last resort and once you start having issues with those, you end up in a wheelchair. My wife's been having issues of cartilage wear in her knees since her teens and because of constant pains, she can just walk... even stairs at a very slow pace are incredibly painful. I asked them about knee replacements for her and they all want to stay far away from it. The result is that my wife now has a very limited life and can't do much of sports to stay healthy and fit, which causes overweight which is even worse for her knees. It's such a ridiculous situation. Seen many doctors in different countries and not a single one is seemingly willing to help.

Then I had to begin AGGRESSIVE REHABILITATION. For about 1 week I was bordering on tears and drugged up like nobody’s business. After about 2 weeks it started to feel a tiny bit better. The PT was awful for about 2 weeks or so, then it just hurt. NOT I WANT TO DIE HURT…..JUST HURT. After about 3-4 weeks I was good and PT no longer felt like my leg had been cut off. Apart from having a talented Surgeon to do the work, YOU MUST ABSOLUTELY BEGIN P/T ASAP. It’s awful but mandatory, if anyone says otherwise then they are being misled. Now……well actually TODAY about 2 hours ago I got home from a 6-7 km run? Left STRAVA at home. Lol I have zero stability/mobility issues. My leg feels so good now that I want my other knee fixed. But like the saying goes NO PAIN NO GAIN! Suffering through the initial pain of surgery and P/T is mandatory. Do that and you’ll be grateful. First few weeks I HATED MY THERAPISTS. Now I send them Christmas Cards and give them updates. I found that the people both men and women WHO DID PUSH THROUGH THE INITIAL AGONY HAD THE MOST SUCCESSFUL RECOVERIES. Those who DID NOT will likely still suffer. NO I AM NOT A TOUGH GUY AT ALL…I WAS JUST DETERMINED THAT I WOULD NOT BE ONE OF THOSE WHO STILL SUFFERED. Doctors suck?!? Maybe yours was just shit. Not all doctors are equal. I have a new knee and replaced cadaver ligaments. My knee feels great and I can’t wait until I can get the other knee replaced. How were your PT Specialists? When did you begin your PT post op? Or did you? I’m virtually pain free most of the time. And I lead a pretty active lifestyle again.
