@xyzzy7000 The Quran says that only those who believe in Allah steadfastly will go to heaven. Now, this is one of the more general ayats about what is needed to get to heaven, so its the idea that even Muslims who sinned &go to hell will eventually get to heaven provided that they DID believe in Allah. I believe that hypocrites necessarily do not believe in God. So even though they "go through the motions" they don't meet the basic requirement for them to eventually get to heaven. Allahu a3lam

(they suggest), "Nor grieve! but receive the Glad Tidings of the Garden (of Bliss), the which ye were promised! From what I understand from some lections the "stand straight and steadfast" part relates to the belief in Allah as The God in private and public.

why does not mainstream islam teach this publicly.. this is why most people rather tend to things like advaita vedanta, non-dual conception of "God" - arrived only at through the method of "neti-neti" aka "not this, not this". so basically, both teach the same thing. anything that can be pointed at, is an object to one of the 6 senses - the 6th being the mind. but "it" is beyond that, it transcends that. so therefore, God is ineffable to speech and intellect. duality needs to be transcended, only in non-dual perception one can "see" God. that is when discernment goes out the window one one no longer sees the borders between polarities, such as male/female, hot/cold, near/far, etc.. and ultimately, "self" and "other" - so thats where one perceives that all (Self) are 1. i think this is the true understanding of ehad.. oneness, not quantity wise, but unity wise. God is 1. that means there is nothing but God. multiplicity is an illusion due to duality or this "dunya". duality is where discernment is made possible. so its the veil. so God can never be reached through the intellect. only through mystical experience, which is arrived at through meditation (prayer), fasting and chastity. you got all these important elements in Islam, which is nice. and overall, all religions are truly teaching the same under the hood. superficial misconceptions rule though...

Sh Hamza Yusuf misrepresents St Thomas Aquinas here by suggesting that he held the view that God is "the supreme being". Thomas Aquinas thought that the only literal things we can say of God are what God is not. Whatever we might say of him positively is a metaphor or an analogy; and this would include the idea of God as "being". For Aquinas to think of God as a being is tantamount to idolatry, for God is not one being amongs others, but there reason there is something rather than nothing.
