Art Class with Matthew Reinhart: Tessellations

Hey there, everyone - welcome back to art class! We're going to use a little geometry today in art class and make our very own interlocking tessellation art, inspired by the mind-boggling illustrations of M.C. Escher. He's known for creative innovative tessellations (interlocking patterns of shapes), incredible optical illusions, and fantastical transformative images - a perfect blend of art and mathematics. Now it's our turn to tessellate! Just follow along with me and, if I move too fast, feel free to pause the video so you can catch up. Hope you enjoy this project and remember: be safe, be healthy, and always be kind.

Learned a new English word! And a cool technique, too. I know your channel is more geared towards kids, but as an adult who enjoys art as a hobby and has just discovered the fun (and intricate science) of popup engineering, I'd just like to say that your videos are very helpful in thoroughly understanding the fundamentals and logic behind the techniques, making it easier to apply in various scenarios. Love the classes. Thank you.

"You know how many mistakes I had to make this video?" That's genius. Kids often think that experts are born to be experts which means becoming an expert will never happen. When in fact the very simple act of trying & failing is what creates experts!

My 10yr old son recently got interested in tesselations. Around the same age, I read a book about Escher's tesselations. But I couldn't find a great way to explain it until now. @ViHart is awe-inspiring but her tiling video isn't quite accessible even to 9yr olds who implicitly understand integrals. Thanks, Matthew. And I still think you should work with Mo Willems if you haven't already.

I am an older person and I love this explanation and demonstration of a technique that fascinates me. If I had been taught this in school I might have showed more interest in maths. Thank you for a great presentation.

Thank you SO MUCH for this very clear and fun tutorial. I'm not your target audience (haha, 33 year old woman), but I'm a printmaker without formal training and this is something I really want to learn how to do, so this is so so appreciated!!
