Art Chat with Miranda Watson Going on a Permanent Art Supply No-By

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

If you have ever felt overwhelmed by the amount of art and craft supplies you own you won't want to miss this conversation with Miranda Watson of the KZread channel Alkai Creek Art. She recently posted a video of a final art supply haul to end them all and now she is done getting new supplies and is using what she has. When I saw that video I knew I needed to have her on the podcast. Here is that video: • Huge Art Haul and Supp...

I might be in the minority, but I don't like haul videos. They make me uncomfortable. I much prefer a video that introduces a product (not necessarily a new one), explains its qualities (and may mention similar products with those qualities), and demonstrates how to use it. The presenters who encourage people to use what they have when showing techniques stay in my subscription list. Those who show products from Temu and the like are history to me.

I totally get that. Many hauls give me the ick especially if they are knowingly preparing k ocl offs (not budget supplies that preform as well as expensive stuff but products designed to trick consumers or make money off another's IP) but I do like the kind of hauls where a reviewer thoughtfully purchased items her community has been asking about. Because Hillburn is one I think of in this realm, one of the conscientious reviewers. A lot of ick hauls I see are all stuff brands sent for free and sometimes it isn't even disclosed (I know because I get the same offers of freebies) or the cheap temu junk that will be forgotten as soon ad its bought. I'm not perfect but some youtubers don't even care about what they are promoting.

Same especially Temu. So wasteful. I don’t like mindless haul videos ( Tarababyz of the makeup world) but like the way and or WHY when LW and MW do it. I see it as them Replenishing their stock for their trade or their KZread job and gives us the option to request reviews of what they bought. I think I would repword it . Hannah Louise Poston ( again makeup world) does the perfect intro and method of doing this. She is very very curated.

I'm with you Candy. I'm not fan of "Art Haul" segment myself. I just scroll out, and leave. I wish I'd hit "dislike". I don't mind "Product Review/S" where we can actually decide for ourselves if the Art Product is for us or not. But the "Art Haul" is a bit "bombastically wasteful". I'm glad that this is being discussed. I think Art KZreadrs and Art Followers alike and should be mindful about this.

This year began inventorying my beloved hoard of art materials. The result was interesting. I began sharing what I discovered I would probably never use and began truly assessing my artistic goals. Now when I go to my art classes, I often take items to see who might like my no longer wanted supplies. I treasure more the still excessive items I am keeping but am joyful to allow others to use what might just sit on my shelves and go unused or undervalued. I also do this with my home. Nevertheless, I am often invigorated and re-inspired when I introduce a new product that fits well with my artistic style.

Wow! This was a great podcast! I want to thank both of you for highlighting the fact that many of us are over-consuming. I find it unfortunate that the social media platforms put emphasis on videos that further encourage spending rather than doing. Dollars to donuts that so very much of what we are snapping up will end up in landfills at some point rather than being used. I love real instructional videos that show how to actually use products but they don’t get recommended which creates a vicious cycle for creators because they need views so they have to create ‘what sells’. For me, I took a hard look at myself maybe 6 or 8 months ago and decided that not one single thing I’ve purchased has made me a better watercolorist. Mainly because I’m not using them, I’m busy shopping. So I stopped buying. I will buy a tube of a legacy brand of paint if I have nothing comparable but that’s it. Thanks ladies for discussing this subject. Someone has to say ‘enough!’. Manufacturers are using us!

My favorite supply videos are the “my favorite” or “what I’ve been using lately”. I do like to see what other artists use and how/why they’re using them, rather than hauls for the sake of collecting. As others have said, thanks for reminding us it’s ok to say, “enough”. Wonderful to see you both on the same screen. It seems like lately many KZread artists have realized that KZread is pulling them away from creating art. It's so time consuming to make and edit just one video that there isn't much time left to just art around. I've also decided to slow down on the buying supplies and also making regular videos, and use that time to finally paint what I've been wanting to paint for ages. Miranda, I can't wait to see what comes of your experiment. I hope you'll share those large canvases when they're full of colors. Have fun.

Thanks for this. I have bought way more art supplies than I need mostly because of watching videos. I appreciate that the videos have helped me get some good stuff, but I definitely bought more than I needed because of seeing all the things that I thought I needed to try and then discovered that they were pretty much the same as what I already had. I’ve also ventured into too many different media rather than focusing on one and getting good at it. I’m now on a permanent no-buy except to replace what I ran out of, which will never happen if I don’t stop watching videos and start painting. I won’t let myself watch review videos of things I don’t have. I’d much rather see a new tutorial in my feed. I need to go use my paper before the sizing goes bad (which it has started to do). I enjoyed this podcast. Now I’m going to go paint something.

Kuretake and Vivia have been on my wishlist since 2 years. Thankfully I am on no a buy, rather not interested in more paints, and wild horses could not make me buy the mouth watering Kuretake Gansai granulating paints. 😛

Very brave move to go "no-buy" permanently. I've recently started buying second hand but new(ish) art supplies. People destash, realise they don't like a medium or inherit art supplies they don't need. I enjoy thinking the supplies will not be thrown away. I made such great purchases, for example an unopened 1990s professional Winsor & Newton field box, made in England, for around USD 30. A new one would cost over $80 and would be made in China. I am on a "shop from my stash" era right now and it is a transformation of my attitude. I first see if I have something similar to what I want to buy it. If not, I make a wish list and wait for a sale. Delaying that shopping therapy kick. Very interesting conversation!

What I think I like best about Lindsay's videos showing supplies is that she differentiates the "unboxings" from the "reviews". There IS a huge difference. Taking products out of the box does not allow us to see how they perform or their working charasteristics. That is an important point. As one who creates for my living, a 'never again buy' would be too extreme for me. With that being said, I truly respect and understand 'no buys' for others. I prefer to do 'less buys' because sometimes we actually need something that we don't have. What I have done since I was on my own as an adult was to ask myself, "Is it a WANT, or a NEED?" I tried to teach my children the same. Sometimes the 'wants' are things we actually treat ourselves to in order to reward ourselves for whatever we feel is warranted. We all should have treats sometimes. But the 'needs' are those things that we have to have in order to function - in whatever capacity our lives dictate. They are kind of 'necessitites' and sometimes art supplies qualify for that. Channels like Lindsay's here are so helpful in assisting us in sorting out these many new products. I am so grateful for you all who do honest reviews. Great interview. I am happy I 'met' Miranda here.

I've been on a no buy (of sorts) since the last half of 2023. Even if my favorite color of one brand of paint is used up I won't buy it again if I have the same color in another brand. Really, how many brands of Ultramarine blue does one need? My (of sorts) means that I will pick up items at estate sales, garage sales, resale shops if it's an item I use. For example I found a full sheet of Arches 140# paper stuck in a rack of quilting and needlework booked art my favorite thrift store and of course I bought it for $1.50 and it still had sizing that was good. I gave away my Himi gouache....just hated it. My friends and I get together once a year and bring unused or disliked art supplies and either buy from each other or trade. We charge rock bottom prices too! We also sell our supplies/books/magazines and artwork at the annual 100 miles garage sale along the Mississippi River and get rid of artwork that stacks up. I save that money for vacations. This is such a great video......I'm using up my supplies......yay.....just finished a sketchbook a week ago and now on to finish another partly filled book. Thank you Lindsay and Miranda!

Wow, I've watched basically all of Miranda's videos, but I learned so many things... I had no idea she taught computer science at the college either. And I always assumed she did the mural! I do think KZread's algorithm heavily favors hauls and reviews, because... advertisers sell things. But I am just as guilty as anyone else of favoring review videos over tutorials. Also it's embarrassing how many tutorials I've watched (while cooking or cleaning or in the bath) versus how many I've followed... Miranda is so right that if we have so many brands and so many colors, that we can't know our supplies very deeply. We have "superficial relationships" with them. And Lindsay what you said about how we look at these minute differences between different brands of ultramarine, when it really probably doesn't matter that much. We see the same exact thing in the beauty community on KZread. And yeah, we spend so much energy looking for that holy grail instead of making art! I can also relate to endless browsing, putting things in and out of the cart, although that usually ends up in me eventually making a purchase. I agree the dopamine and satisfaction from actually creating the art is so much better than the dopamine from purchasing!

Great to see you too get together! I think both of you have contributed a lot to my buying curiosity and trying all the brands! Lol having said that, it is because I have fulfilled that curiosity that I have pretty much stopped trying all the brands, and I know what I like and what I don’t like now, so I basically just replace what I run out of. This year I have dedicated myself to using what I have, and now that I know what I like, I know how to use it, and what types of projects I will use it for. Once I bought all of it and had a huge stash that was the second level… So I looked at a lot of tutorials and self educated the techniques and the different supplies so, yeah! I’ve got the stuff that I want and I know how to use it and I’m not frustrated anymore or overwhelmed. In fact, I am at a point where I am getting rid of a few things or have outgrown some student grade stuff. I have art supplies that I want to use up and not buy it again while others I will get replacements. I’m in control now 😁😄

Two of my favorites in one show! So fun! We literally did not buy a house because it had a gorgeous mural that was totally antithetical to our style (think Victorian roses... lots of pink). The real estate lady kept saying, "You can paint over it." and I responded, "No. I really can't."

@@thefrugalcrafter it was absolutely gorgeous; however, everything we owned was in the colors of turquoise, yellow-green, and purple (I’m not a huge fan of pastel pink). So glad for this message today. I trust Lindsay's reviews to know quality and value but I did make purchases when I saw something with a great review. That's not Lindsay's fault but my own accountability for making wise purchases. As I moved to a more minimalist 😅way of living this past year , I had to examine why I was bringing anything into my space. My art supplies when I was honest with myself was caused by FOMO, and getting that dopamine hit or belief that that item would make me a better creative. I realized my mistake and then spent time purging my stuff to share with others that could use them, keeping only my favorites and being satisfied with focusing on creating instead of collecting. So I agree with Miranda that the creating is the dopamine substitute I needed. So I'm on the same no buy as Miranda. I still go click and look at what Lindsay reviews but I LOVE that she ALWAYS says, use what you have. I really value the integrity and honesty and feel bad that Lindsay feels such a struggle with how others use her reviews. I think she can just know she's not responsible for other's purchases. They are. Thanks.

We have become a consumer culture, depending on stuff, especially new stuff, accumulating an overabundance of stuff, all this stuff it takes to make us happy, getting our satisfaction in becoming "collectors" of art supplies rather practicing artists or hobbyists. I'm not sure this kind of happiness from "stuff" is true Joy... It's really something to think long and deeply about with regard to Art. The whole meaning of Art is to enhance our creativity, a deep source of human Joy. But if we slide into collecting instead of creating, we need to spend some time in meaningful reflection of the path we've chosen. Never mind the impact of the overabundance of any kind of "stuff" is having on the environment. And psychologically and emotionally, what kind of damage is the overstimulation of the "want monster" doing in people? The "want monster" is a form of greed which is a destructive emotion. The monster can really never be satisfied once it is encouraged within us. There is the old adage that whatever you feed will grow..... Possessing the newest art toy is a temporary joy; the painting or craft we make from a given art supply is a source of deep pride and satisfaction (Joy) for a long time to come, to ourselves and to others we might share our art with. There is pleasure both from the piece of art we created, and from the sense of accomplishment we have from completing it. It is such a different joy than just owning a bunch of stuff. It takes a whole lot less to achieve that joy from creation...sometimes just a few tubes of paint, a brush, and a piece of paper...perhaps accompanied by a cup of tea and some good background music. I have fond memories of the older days in KZread when the emphasis was on helping people use their supplies well. Wonderful painting demonstrations were given. Helpful lessons in various types of crafting were taught. Some of my favorite channels have succumbed to mainly reviewing new art toys, new "stuff." How many Etcher bags and plein air kits can one buy? How many palettes are enough? How many markers can one person use in a lifetime? Does the person who dies with the most paint tubes win? And what happens to all the markers that never get used at all, but they make a pretty display? There now are channels that only do art hauls to stimulate the appetite to buy without even providing lessons in how to use those supplies. What happens to all the unused stuff in the subscription art boxes? The manufacturers, as one commenter said under this video, are using all the rest of us, especially the cheap knock off companies who are destroying the older tried and true brands who paved the way for supplying quality art supplies and deserve our loyalty. Sorry...I don't mean this as a rant, but doesn't it seems this issue might need a deep rethink? Please read it with the spirit in which it was intended.

Thank you for your comment. Those tutorials still exist, but don't get pushed out to the home page like the hauls do. It's had to say if the hauls do well because people like them and click, so youtube serves them up more or if they do well because youtube recommends them and people don't see the other stuff. I think hauls and reviews (and sat chats/essays) do well because over covid people got tutorial fatigue. If they watch a tutorial then they feel like they should do it or they are lazy but you can watch the other videos without obligation to do anything and it I'd way easier to click buy and get a dopamine rush than making art for the same rush. I think a lot of creators stopped making tutorials because people stopped watching them. Hauls are very easy to make and get tons of views. Reviews take time (if they are a real review and not an unboxing), but they get more views, and creators can earn commission as you know, so there is an incentive. Years ago you could be a hobby creator. Work a "real" job and make a video or two a month for fun and people would see it. Now the platform is so saturated you have to put a full time effort in to get your videos seen. I reckon there are thousands of hobby creators making videos that only get a handful of views. I have no answer. It's tough.

Great discussion! I'm a (relatively) new artist, so having a place to go for reviews and general knowledge-gathering has been invaluable. That said, I definitely went overboard in 2022/2023 with wanting to try *everything* so I've been trying to scale back in 2024. I'm not doing a no-buy, but I have a much stricter list of things I want. Even then I'm trying to hold out as long as possible, either for a really stellar deal or that one day I just can't resist buying something. Apps for watching prices have been my friend, because I can set a price and not allow myself to buy until it's below that (theoretically ambitious) threshold.

For apps like ebay and mercari it's usually a matter of putting it on my watchlist and then waiting to see if I get a lower price offer notification, with the caveat that I only put things on my watchlist that I would aaaalmost be willing to buy at current price already.

Miranda, I have the same Miya Himi watercolor set you have, and seeing how long that paint lasted when you were actually trying to use it up was a vivid message. Lindsay, we rely on your comprehensive reviews, especially because of your knowledge and how you make art work, not just swatches or samples, from unfamiliar products. You’re actually interested in thoroughness, which is pretty rare. At the same time you’re great about talking about reducing mindless consumerism to benefit the environment. This discussion is great because there aren’t easy answers to the problems, so discussion can help us figure out an approach. You all are great!

I don't get the haul videos. The only reason why I watch them is because sometimes they are mixed with a bit of review on products, which are not that covered on yt... I find buying art supplies quite tyreing, but I suspect I'm somehow sensoricaly sensitive? For an example: I dont get why you like coloursoft, they are a canion away from prismas to me, but I have listened to your advice and bought a few of most recomended pencils by you, and I am glad, cause on one hand I have saved soooo much money by not geting crap, and It has really heped me open up to art. As a kid, I was told by my art teacher to only use very hard clay craons, and I have struggled with them and gave up on drawing altogether. Yes, I was one of those kids who were not drawing. During my mid-life crisis, instead of bunggy jumping , I decided to learn how to paint and draw. It's because of you my 6 years old son is getting prismas (which in poland are almost as costly as Derwent Lightfast). Because of you, I am not buying Hiya pastels cause no one else mentioned their possible toxicity, and I need something safe to paint with him. I jumped once you have mentioned, that you'll be working with your favourite products this year cause I need advice, especially for tried and tested. That is how I save money. Does it help that you have a lot of art supplies? yes. I especially like videes, whete wyou show all the products you own from a given cathegory, and say how they are different from each other. I haven't seen anyone doing that, and It really helps me choose the right ones for me. I don't like neocolors, I don't like aquafines, bot I have bought a few of each, and it's not the end of the world. It is your job, so it it not just for you. If someone is buying too much, then the question is why? what does it do for that person? What need does it compasate? What does it represent?

After a while I've always reached saturation in the number of different materials for different kinds of drawing and painting, I'm interested in and from then on I don't buy much and find out what I like the most and would then only buy that, if my supply runs out or it is very cheap on offer. I'm also pretty exhausted from it and have little energy to search the shops for good offers and prefer to use my time them more productively. I also have little interest in trying new products in one area. The only stupid thing is when I'm looking for gifts for my siblings and I have to make sure I get over the shipping cost limit and then picking something out for myself is always a bit tiring.

This has been so inspiring. I've been struggling my no-buy since January. I've failed every month, and I want to do it for a year. I've slowed down on my spending and getting really only quality things when I do get them, but it is still not in the parameters of my no-buy. This past month it's been "art adjacent" things such as books, a case for my exacto knives, blah, blah, blah....sigh... but I will not give up on my endeavors. I will continue to buy books after I've actually READ the last book. I do get 2 subscription art boxes from Craftamo (Emma L & Sarah B boxes) that I have exempted from my no-buy so it's not like I am going to not new have supplies. But thank you sooooo much for this!

I have been looking out for this video since you announced it in yesterday's Sat Chat. I have been on a no buy lately. Not that strict but imposed by the lack of space and the abbundance of art supplies that I already have. The goal is to create more instead of constantly buying new stuff that then becomes overwhelming. But I make a game out of it. Every month I randomly choose a palette ot other material to work with and I can also use the previous month's material and my pocket travel palette. So every month I get to swatch a new palette which is the element of novelty, and I also have the stability of last month's palette and my pocket palette. I sometimes crave new stuff, but I look it up online, then wonder if I really need it, think of how expensive they are and also how much shipping costs, mayabe put it on a whish list and carry on with life. PS. I don't watch art hauls anymore. I find them boring.

That said Cotman are easy to find and if you get the right colors pretty good, just not as good as the ones I recommend or as good as they used to be.

Ladies, you are fantastic. This conversation is very intelligent and valuable. This is your job. I agree with everything you are both saying. I will be honest with you both. I also rely on Lindsay for her very honest review, BUT, and I say, but…. I fought my entire adult life for independence and autonomy after over 30 yrs of all they abuse types there are and not being allowed to even gave a tiny space for creating, I but what I want, but only if Lindsay says it good 😊 🎉lol 🎉 needless to say I have not been frugal at all. It’s part of my therapy 😅

I started with a $1 store brand kids watercolor pack, and was happy with it. Until I realized that I wasn't getting the results my teachers were getting, so I brought a $$ set, I loved it. I was disappointed when someone at Urban Sketchers said it was still a student set. What the heck, how much can watercolors cost? Oh WOW so much money!!

  • @thefrugalcrafter

    @thefrugalcrafter

So what if they are a student set, if you like them, use them. It's kinda like wine. A $10 bottle of Barefoot or Cupcake wine will be 4x better than a $5 bottle but a $20 bottle isn't necessarily twice as good as the $10 bottle. The quality difference gets smaller as you get into pricier paints. For line and wash you might not notice a difference between student and artist grade. Enjoy you paint and don't let anyone make you feel inferior about it:)

In this analogy there is a huge improvement from dollar store paint to student grade but not as big of a quality jump when you go to artist grade.

Im trying to stop buying art supplies. I sold a lot of the ones I had and it was a lot of work. I mostly only buy from a handful of legacy brands now and I keep a wishlist that I refer to when I do order supplies 2-3 times a year. I do like watching other people talk about their favorite supplies but I'm not really into watching them just pull things out of a package.

There’s another content creator that I recent started watching who will do an occasional art haul video. She also does a yearly “check-in” video where she goes through the things that she bought the previous year and talks about the ones she used and the ones she didn’t use. She’s hones about what she’s used and what she hasn’t used. She also talks about the things she wants to keep even though she didn’t use them much (or at all) and which ones she gives to friends. I thought that was a nice take on the subject.

Hannah Louise Poston cured me, yes cured me of that. 🤣 Her older playlists especially when she duped the vibes or made her own eyeshadow palettes with what she had. I now apply that behavior to my art supplies because not surprisingly once the makeup addiction stoped I switched that thrill of waiting for UPS with art supplies and went a bit mad. But have come around.

I have a small space so it keeps me under control, I love making art journal mixed media art……I buy stamps & stencils only from the artists that match my style of creating, so usually it’s either grungy abstract or stylized quirky characters, the releases might have 10 things but if I only like 2 I only get those 2, also I only use paper, no canvases no place to keep them. I also like making cards that I give to people. I do like using inks very much. But only use 3 brands I like. I guess I’m more of a creative than an official artists.

I also might be in the minority but if for whatever reason a person has accumulated a huge stack of art supplies (or anything else, come to that) which they know full well they will never use in two lifetimes, why don’t people donate the excess to worthy causes? There must be millions of people in far-away places who would love to receive your excess purchases. I have recently begun emptying my studio of things I know I won’t ever use again. I have given most to a local charity shop. They include easels, frames (new), canvases (I don’t oil or acrylic paint any more), print rack, brushes, paints, pencils, and much more. I am working on trying to dispose of my paintings too. That’s a bottomless pit as I am a prolific KZread creator and am obliged to produce a painting (albeit small) daily. So, the solution is, give your stuff away. That’ll give you a dopamine rush for sure.

In answer to your question Lindsay regarding reviewing the cheap brands, my 10 cents is to stop reviewing them. Think about less than 10 years ago when they didn’t exist, you would have told people that they should try to buy a legacy brand, but if they absolutely couldn’t afford it, to buy Crayola and make art and enjoy it. I think that reviewing those unknown brands brings a lot of issues, including all the ones you brought up. I personally find many times that I if I do buy something inexpensive it doesn’t turn out to be what it was for you or someone else who I respect as well. And at least on Amazon you can’t return used products, unless there were damaged or defective, so you’re stuck with it and the expense. I would much rather buy less of a good product, or save up for what I will love and use, than just keep consuming product because I can’t get 320 of them cheaply. In any case, I know I don’t understand all the ins and outs of KZread analytics, and you have to do what is best for you, but I personally hate haul videos, they make feel icky, so I don’t watch them. I know people do like them, but I would say most people who watch end up buying, they don’t just get their dopamine hit and move on. I have been pulled into this with the stamps/dies and I find myself buying much more than I could ever use or need because I see someone else buying/using it, and yet if I hadn’t known about it, my life would have been fine. I think it’s sad that I hear more and more people saying how they enjoy “collecting” supplies. I know they think they are joking, but most aren’t. I am guilty of this myself and it’s something I am really struggling with. I personally LOVE that Miranda is doing a true no buy and I honestly would love to be brave enough to try to do the same. Thanks to you both, it was a very good conversation and very thought provoking.

Lindsay I rely on your reviews. When I did have a little bit of money to spend on art supplies you kept me from buying two sets of things that would have just been a waste of my money. Please do not stop making reviews people like myself desperately need them because we're moving from beginning to intermediate and some medium such as watercolors for me. I'm a lady that when it comes to pencils I know what I'm doing but when it comes to watercolor or ink I need help. At least when our finances change and I can add some things to my supplies.

This is really silly and it sounds like I'm making a joke...and I kind of am, on myself...but the horrible habit I'm trying to break is NOT about buying too many art supplies...I do have to be careful...but it is taking so much time to write comments...and often very long comments on so many videos I watch! I can't tell you the hours I've spent just writing comments and when I've got so much else to do. I'm determined to change that. I love contributing but I waste a lot of time (see previous msg I wrote.) 🙀
