All three of you looked like you were having a fun time. What was the occasion and how did the three of you approach this? Did you just go out cold and total improve with no discussion or did you say something like why don't each one of us solo and then towards the end of each solo start playing a groove to set up the next soloist? BTW you and Simon are welcome to come over my house and jam anytime. I've got exactly three drum kits set up all the time (13 sets altogether and most of the other drums are in my garage which is right next to the area with the three sets. Pictures of Art, Buddy Rich and yourself are lining the walls so I would make sure I had a picture of Simon up there before he arrived so he wouldn't feel left out lol.

AND Billy Cobham is using Tama's Artstar Cordia which was their newest and top of the line at the time WITH Paiste cymbals!!! Everyone thinks that the Buddy Rich Memorial Scholarship Concert started the three drummer solo thing with Colaiuta/Gadd/Weckl. ALSO Art Blakey with the 3 mounted/2 floor tom configuration which is the configuration that a lot of players went to in the late 1980's thru 1990's. Art is such a stoical figure. I've never seen Cobham and Phillips on the same stage together!!! This is a rare bird!!!

Three of my favourite drummers, Billy you are inspirational, not just for your brilliance, innovation and multifacetedness as a drummer...But for the sheer enjoyment you derive from your art and your great generosity of spirit toward other artists. And what can one say about 'Thunder', Art Blakey? Other than he was one of the true greats of drumming. Interestingly another like Krupa inspired by Chick Webb's aggressive swing style. Like you Billy another true pioneer he was to Be-bop and its development as you are to fusion, great to see you sharing the same stage! And Simon Phillips what a thoroughly durable and talented drummer with great touch and no little subtlety. It is hard to believe that he was a rock/metal drummer for a large part of his career given the the feel he has for Jazz/fusion etc. Thanks for this!

He was already well established by this time, and he was working extensively with Mike Oldfield. He'd already worked with Jeff Beck, Judas Priest, and 10CC. (One side of the 10CC album was Steve Gadd, the other was Simon.) I caught SImon in Wurzburg Germany supporting Mike Oldfield, and he blew my mind. I was only fourteen at the time, and a trumpet player, but my best friend was an insanely gifted drummer who just sat in absolute amazement. A year or two later he met Simon at the Frankfurt Musikmesse and had a chance to talk with him about the Oldfield show. Simon, I believe, started playing professionally at 12 years old. By the time this was shot, he'd already been a pro for quite a while.

gas. wouldn't have expected to see these three drummers together. vague impression: blakey's playing is more fluid, graceful and dance-like ('musical' in the sense in that there is no point in music being otherwise); Philips and Cobham's playing here is more focused on rock dynamics (like studio musicians); but all good (of course). kudos to Philips to be up there playing with these guys. I admire the way he can seemingly be equally at home in any jazz or rock setting.

I took my drummer to see Art Blakey play at Ronnie Scott's for some inspiration. Instead of motivating him to greater creative heights he gave up playing & sold his kit a few days later. I said to him, "Imagine if everyone reacted like that, there'd be no drummers left you selfish ****!" He then punched me hard in the face, & I learned valuable life lesson.

This is the only time I have seen Simon play on a different kit other than a Tama... and a small one at that (compared to what he usually plays) amazing as he usually is.
Even at such a young age Simon really rips this one!!!!!

He was involved among other things in Mike Oldfield's records as drummer and co-producer during that time. His playing in the song Crisis is delightful.
Master's at work totally Amazing 🙌🙌
like a rocket sent to the moon big drummers art billy simon a positive vibration thx
A time bomb trio! Awesome
Artblakey didnt even play fast and still owned the performance
This give courage !
BRAVOOO!!!!
the emperor, the king and the impatient ...small prince!!!
Bu was old enough to be Billy and Sonny's father.
Прекрасно!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The stuff Art lays down is like Napalm.
Nice to see Art Blakey go toe to toe with these younger cats, and giving as good as he gets. They could have him miked up better though. It's always great to see Billy Cobham on a smaller Kit, he has still got his jazz chops then.
Simon playing Gretsch and Paiste. Wow!
Drummers having fun.
As a HUGE Cobham fan I must say that SP is my other fav drummer 👉🏼 listen to Rock Pebbles and Sand with Stanley Clarke…that album is one of the best Rock Fusion albums 💥💥💥 AND respect for mr ART BLAKEY
Simon Phillips sounds great on these Gretsch drums. His kits always sound phenomenal but this kit makes him play a little differently. I heard a couple of Gadd licks in there which I have never heard him do before.
ずうっと聴いていられる。😃サンキュー😉👍🎶ナイス👊😃💕
Simon looks so young and accomplished!

John-Andrew I have a similar story. I learned cornet, then played Flugel Horn... saw Simon with Toyah in 1982 when I was 12... and now play drums!! :)
My favorite BILLY COBHAM album is POWER PLAY!
Não tem comentário . são uns monstros de bateras
Such a random combination. Blakey's a legend obviously, as is Billy. I always knew of SiPhi, but didn't really have much of a sense of scale of the guy, at least until I saw this... www.simon-phillips.com/discography.php
Wow!
12:28 = incredible transition!
Fucking awesome!! '!!!!!
people always have to make things a fucking competition
Le grand simon 👍👍🤘🤘👏👏
Respect ONLY for the legends.....offcourse both r playing great, but legend will always be a legend....hats off for Sir Blakey..
I still want to Tony Williams in a drum battle with Simon and Billy if anyone has that footage
simon is beast!!
👏🏾👏🏾
Art what a groove.. Amazing single strike roll!! n. 1
There is a reason are reguarded as great at what they are at..they simply are for a fact
Muito profissional 2
Simon Phillips hair has not aged a bit...a force of nature indeed.😆
Hard hit clean .432
Doesnt matter who's 'best', as ol Art has it all. Speed, chops and youth are surpassed by his mellow musicality. That stuff he does at 8:20 breaks up all that previous (clutter).
Okay, Art, yes, we get it. SOMEBODY has to play cymbals!
It's funny that people think 63 is old. Check out Roy Haynes, he's in his 90's and sounds like he's 35!
gas. wouldn't have expected to see these three drummers together. vague impression: blakey's playing is more fluid, graceful and dance-like ('musical' in the sense in that there is no point in music being otherwise); Philips and Cobham's playing here is more focused on rock dynamics (like studio musicians); but all good (of course). kudos to Philips to be up there playing with these guys. I admire the way he can seemingly be equally at home in any jazz or rock setting.
el camarografo es una pesadilla
The first time i have seen Simon playing a Gretsch drum 'cos he is from Tama. Anyway he is my master
