There are jokes being set up right now that aren't going to fully pay off until the third season. The writing here is epic.

Jessica Walter was so wonderfully funny, and “dead dove, do not eat” is A++

dead dove do not eat is not only a really funny joke but it has also gained a life beyond this show in fanfiction. it’s commonly used on fanfictions with more risque/disturbing elements to tell people to read the tags and that what they see there will be in the fic. dead dove do not eat. just wanted to share fun little tidbit

its so funny because my reaction is alway "i don't know what i was expecting" when i open a fic with the tag "dead dove do not eat" bc i always think eh it cant be that bad lol

@@smc299 help you’re so real for this ahdiwnidk. the real issue is when people act like dead dove: do not eat is its own tag that can be a catch all. like nooo that doesn’t tell me anything

This is possibly the funniest show of all-time. The George Michael and Maeby pairing just gets better and better, while Buster and Tobias get crazier and crazier. This show hasn't even gotten as weird as it's going to. 😂

Jessica Walter DOMINATES the scene whenever she's on screen! She was also in Dinosaurs, before Arrested Development, and later she was in Archer (playing a character scarily similar to Lucille Bluth in the best way possible lol). I believe she was also in a bunch of isolated episodes of MANYYY TV shows and a Clint Eastwood movie. Definitely recommend adding Archer to your always growing (I assume) list of shows to react to, the humour is very much inspired by Arrested Development's!

To answer your question: it’s one of my favorites. I also think the later seasons are still good (not brilliant but good) as long as you watch the original cut of season 4. I wouldn’t say it’s the best ever because I think most aspects of a show (humor, relationships, social commentary, expressions) really reflect the time it was made and sometimes you can identify with it and sometimes you don’t. I think you can compare cleverness, story arc etc. but if you don’t like the topics or feel of the show, those don’t matter

Seasons 4 & 5 are definitely NOT “terrible”. In fact something they do brilliantly in S4 is pay off a joke that isn’t even set up until later. Never seen anything like it.

To answer Joe's Q, is AD the best comedy of all time? Well, that's subjective. I mean, I would say yes, for me it is. But what's more objective is that it's arguably the best written sitcom of all time and the way that season 3 wraps up is just pure AD perfection. Please to enjoy the ride!

If you can watch the original cut of season 4, there were some of the funniest moments of television set up and paid off masterfully.

I think a very poignant critique I heard of the Netflix was that it lacked the chemistry between the actors. That chemistry is really the magic of these early seasons and the Netflix episodes lacked that because by that point, the cast members had all become too big and too busy to easily get all together. They instead tried to focus on individual characters, which just didn’t feel the same

While I do think there's a big difference between the last two seasons and the first, I don't think they ruined the show or are as terrible as some people think at all. It's obviously up to personal opinion, but I think if you decide to react to more than the first three seasons, I hope you can put the prominent opinions about those seasons aside and go at them with an open mind, just because reactions to a show expecting to hate it and picking out only the less good things are honestly not fun to watch!

Agreed. The last 2 are not bad, but I feel it is only funny in hindsight. I was also confused by Ron Howard as a character on the show while also narrating.

Also: if you like Jessica Walter's character (the mother) in this show, you'll love her character in "Archer" (2009). The show has the same level/speed of humor (though Archer falls off in quality PRECIPITOUSLY in the later seasons); definitely worth a watch.

I would still say Arrested Development is one of the best tv comedies of all time, despite the subpar Netflix seasons. So many great comedies fall off in the final seasons, but the greatness of the earlier seasons carry them through on the minds of viewers. I'd say Arrested Development definitely falls in that category.

This is by far the best comedy show with or without the Netflix seasons. However I don’t think they are necessarily as bad as people make them out to be. Yeah they’re not as good as the first seasons but that’s impossible to beat because those ones were so genius. There are still a lot of good moments in the last seasons that are worth watching imo.

If you like Jessica Walter in this as Lucille and you haven't watched it, check out the animated series Archer. She voices a very similar but cruder character, Mallory.

The problem with Netflix wasn't anything other than the writing turned the characters from lovable a-holes to dark, deeply disturbing despicable people who were over the edge into psychotic.

Personally, I think the constant self-referential jokes in this show is actually why it failed. By the 3rd episode it wasn't something you could just tune into and watch without being completely lost. It turned off the average viewer since it was airing before binging and streaming at taken off. Also back then it was way easier to get away with things like sexual innuendo on network TV. It was even wilder on other networks; just look at FX and early Sunny In Philly episodes.
