A live, semi-improvised synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.
Important note: Midicake sent me over the ARP for free. I rarely get free gear, though I'm very grateful when it happens. There was no expectation for me to put it in a video, and no request from Midicake other than to share my thoughts with them. That said, I really enjoyed using it and I'll be keeping it around, as it strikes a nice balance between the "plug-and-pretty" of the NDLR and the "depth and detail" of a traditional sequencer. I've still got plenty to explore with it. Thanks, Chris!
I started with the ARP, because I wanted to see what it could do. I didn't want to overload the table at first, so I took out the Minifreak, which has voices to spare. Very quickly I was creating arpeggios and sequencing lines I really liked, and easily able to customize the lines to what I was looking for, from rhythms to polymetrics to inversions etc. I started with just standard major and minor chords, but it was extremely easy to customize the chords on the eight chord buttons once I wanted some 7ths and 6ths. And to have a chord sequencer built in was extremely helpful, as it reduced the amount of gear I needed on the table.
Once I had the bones of the song structure, I filled out some more parts, with Erebus on bass and the TR-06 on drums. Finally, I felt it needed something a little gnarlier around the interlude, and luckily I'd just picked up the awesome 303 clone from Cyclone Analogic. Once that was in place, it was just a matter of shaping the song through performance parameters. The final result is pretty cool, and adds some tones, timbres, and textures I haven't been getting as much these days.
Thanks for listening.
Midicake ARP - most sequencing (i.e. for Minifreak and Erebus)
Arturia Minifreak - three synth lines
Dreadbox Erebus - bass synth
Cyclone Analogic Bass Bot TT-303 - acid bass (using its own sequence)
Meris LVX - drive and delay for TT-303
Kenton MIDI Thru - MIDI splitter/thru box

One of the best composers on youtube. Killing it 🎉
Before i even watch this track, i became a patron. Its taken me way too long. Sorry for that bro. I love your work on so many levels. Im glad to be able to indulge such a wonderful talent. 🍻
This jam had the perfect amount of power and energy to help me fight off the Sunday scaries! That acid line was mint! Thank you for sharing your art with us!
Very nice mood shifts in this one. Yes, that acid section in the middle was my second cup of coffee for the morning. Thanks, Jay.
Outstanding! Great to see Midicake ARP put to such good use.
I love the subtle melancholy in your pieces, such a nice touch ✨ 🙏🏽🤌🏽
Nice job. IMHO you know you've reached the pinnacle of a jam when sensory overload makes finding the right button difficult. 😎
Awesome as always. Keep em coming.
Love it Jay! That bass patch was lovely.
Banger! Beautiful mix.
This is amazing, great job managing all of that. Such a beautiful sound :)
Very beautiful, cool set of hardware !
Really digging the minifreak! Sweet video!
This was SOOO amazing!!!!! Purely fantastic!
This is perfection. The vibe hit me hard. Thank you 🙏
As always thank you for the run through
Great Jam Jay! 😇🤩
Incredible performance, very nice.

Chef’s kiss! The little noodles on the MiniFreak were lovely.
Cool acid ❤ also nice set up
Amazing! Takes me back to 80’s computer games!
Your music is always excellent 🙂😌
very nice track! that midicake looks interesting
Awesome Track Jay! I just woke up to this :) It's fantastic to see ARP in the hands of someone with such talent. Thank you also so much for the feedback on ARP, we'll look to see if we can't spice up the chord sequencing features for a future update. Always looking to improve ARP's capabilities.

I think it's in a wonderful state as is, but more chord sequencing will be a lot of fun. Thanks again for sending this along!
The most beautiful song in electro genre
very powerfull song! excellent!
Give this guy a real stage
Beautiful 🤩 Thanks for the great video and description Jay! I have been following Midicake since its debut and have been resisting not to get one as I already have the NDLR (even if they look quite similar at first glance, each one seems to have some own features - and the ARP is still getting nice and cool firmware updates, which doesn't seem to be the case for the NDLR). When I saw your desktop for this session, I couldn't resist smiling as I've been resisting heavy GAS not only for the ARP, but also the TT-303, the Minifreak and the Meris LVX! 😅
Midicake Arp, interesting. I don't believe I have seen it before?

Really really good song 🎵
So gooooood 😊
A very nice jam from you as always! The ARP looks so cool and I want one… but it’s definitely later if I get it because there are some other gear I’m gas’in for now 😁 Funny I also did a jam with the LVX today but with my Digitone and I will post it shortly ☺️ I also thought about adding the feedback for the ensign but never did.

@@JayHosking sure thing! Its this one… bare in mind I’m very much a music beginner (started with learning piano with my music knowledge in 2019 and synths in 2022. driven by just passion for the gear and the music 😁 kzread.infoLdwsB6e7suo?feature=share
INCREDIBLE (!)
Okay-- yeah.... damn it really builds up.
Oof so good, Jay.
You inspire me a lot but you will also make me poor soon. Just got back to synths after a short break, bought a Minilogue xD to start with and more in the list to buy. Hope to make some tracks like you and not just end up getting lost in jamming.
What a beautiful chords. I can tell that's you by only that! You are the DAWless performance Debussy, and this is *Acide De La Lune* 🤖

Quite amazing how much you can do with the arpeggiator.
GREAT
Great jam and nicest chord sequence. A bit messy in the end IMO, but great track!!
Nice
Beautiful as ever. I got the tt-03 mk2 and it couldn’t keep a stable midi connection for live use so I sent it back (the holes in the back were too small to get a firm seating), but I loved the sound and sequencer.

@@leftmono1016 I went ahead and just grabbed the Roland TB-03. The sequencer isn’t as advanced, but it’s doing the 303 thing enough for me. I’m Intrigued by the TD3-MO as well.

@@LoLaKoala - I nearly got a TB03 but held off because the TDs are so cheap. But before I could decide for sure the Pro 800 came out which I couldn’t resist. I keep making do with a MAM MB33 303 clone which was very cheap and sounds ok.

Great stuff as ususal. Thanks for your observations on the midicake arp. You seem to have tried all sequencers in the world. Have you also tried the oxi one? curious to hear your thoughts on that one. Also, what do you mean with sequencer 'lab' on the bass bot?
@tendingtropic7778
Жыл бұрын
also, is the sequence / progression on the TT-303 coming from its internal sequencer only? or also from midicake arp?
@JayHosking
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I have an Oxi One. Feels great, and I love its "harmonize" feature for locking all the tracks together, but I also feel a bit constrained by the way it locks you in a scale (unless you use it in chromatic mode, and then the harmonizing is less useful). But what makes the Oxi One neat are the different types of sequencers, and having something like MI Marbles outside of eurorack. The 303 sequencing is from its internal sequencer. The "lab" is a sequence generator inside the 303 that you can tell what notes and note types to play, plus what kind of sequence, and then it will smartly generate a sequence for you based on those parameters.

NDLR over midicake ? Or are they just too different?
I've got a midicake arriving soon, can I ask what you're using as the master?
@JayHosking

Here, it is the master, using its MIDI sequence to govern the chord progression. Enjoy the ARP!
hi Jay. love your stuff- I dont quite understand how you can record the different tracks separately to then mix them in a daw
@JayHosking

I'm recording everything in separately via a mixer/audio interface. Most of the mixing is done there, but a little bit of touch-up work is sometimes done in the DAW. And thanks!

@@JayHosking I got one to go with the Deluge as it has 16-part multitimbrality, one for each MIDI channel, so I can essentially have 16 patches play at the same time (or stack a few on top of each other, to make room for any other synths who want to join in the fun). It's a pretty incredible unit, but yeah, if you already have a great collection, it's definitely surplus

So this jam got seeded DEEP and served as my absolute first "Melodic Exploration"; last Saturday (with some help - thanks Aunty) I noted down your played-by-hand melody, broke out a MIDI kb, hooked it up to my new DeepMind, and just went to town playing it.... until my arm was sore, then played it some more; when I got bored, I improvised a tad. That little melody is now firmly stuck in muscle memory, probably until the day I die. That, being my first, makes you a substantially profound "one of my influences"!!!
LOVE the polyrhythms (or polymeters) (I don't know the correct term)

Any comparisons between the NDLR and the Midicake?
@JayHosking
Жыл бұрын
The NDLR is more immediately musical, since it locks you in a key and then every chord is diatonic and pleasing. This means your key presses can be focused on interesting chords (7ths, 6ths) rather than just getting the notes right. However, it's also more rigid, not allowing you to go to interesting chords that are out of the scale, and the motifs are a little harder to accurately program. The ARP hardware physically feels a little better, and the parameters are set up so that you have a very large amount of control on each of the four tracks. It's also easier to program, and you can play it by entering keyboard input. The flip side is that it doesn't lock you to a scale, so you need to know what notes you want (rather than stumbling into happy accidents on the NDLR), and will need to use the custom chord editing to get exactly the notes you want. Both are great and do something a little different!

@@JayHosking thanks for the thoughtful reply!
what do you think of the LVX?
@JayHosking
6 ай бұрын
It's good! I think it's most interesting in context as a multi-effects device, like the Chroma Console. Great for mono synths like the 303 or MS-20 that benefit from multiple stages of colour. Missing the design benefits or philosophy of something like the Polymoon, and not nearly as performable as the Zen Delay.
