ARP Omni & Quadra Master Oscillator - Divide Down Polyphony - Synthchaser

In this video, I explain how polyphony is achieved on the ARP Omni 1, Omni 2, and Quadra synthesizers (and others of the same type) using a master oscillator, top octave divider and frequency dividers. I discuss how this type of polyphony is different from the type of polyphony on the type of synthesizers with fixed number of voices, like the Prophet 5, Oberheim OB-X, and Memorymoog.
I also introduce 3 of my new retrofits--a drop in replacement for the Master Oscillator, a replacement for the TDA0470/TDA0470D gating IC chips, and a replacement 4075 voltage controlled filter.

Parts, service and synthesizers available on my website. I buy broken synthesizers!

I can already hear all that heavy breathing analog purists in background. :) But what you said makes perfect sense with this instrument. And as always, amazing job and thanks for saving all thoose beautiful machines.

Very very nice work. I've heard the "argument" against this type of repair that "IT'S ONLY ORIGINAL ONCE!!!" Why, yes. That's true. But if it doesn't *work* and is either going to a dump or getting parted out, I'd much rather have it working with the 'unoriginal' part.

Exactly! It's like saying you wouldn't change the oil in your 1962 Ferrari because you want to keep it original. :)

Wow!! A top octave generator!! That is VERY good news! I dont have one of those Arps but could you do something similar for sayyyy a Polymoog? Someday that might be needed. Also wow, now we see what you look like! Great work, as always. We have to keep the old synths working!

So this is just the master oscillator, ahead of the top octave generator. But I do have a replacement top octave generator in the works when I have time to finish it up. And that would work for the Polymoog as well--it uses the same chip as the Omni.

@@Synthchaser Whoops! Right. My mind is wandering again (working on a programming problem while watching the video). But that is pretty cool news. And yes, definitely still an analog synth. I can see how some people will argue that but that's really not something that makes a difference to the sound.

Is the Strings section in the Quadra exactly like the Omni 2? The Quadra strings sound bigger to me.

How much are the 550240 TOG chips worth these days? I have about a dozen of them in my stash from when I worked at Lowery Organ, in which they used them in their top-end organs.

antigen4 while I understand your skepticism - I would be skeptic to a decade ago. The way CMOS works is that the output isn’t shaped by the input. The output either works or it doesn’t, if the input isn’t square enough there simply is no output. This is why the sound of the overall circuit isn’t changed. At all.

NOT that i'm at all skeptical about the 'digital/analogue' thing you mention but I'd be a BIT surprised if it didn't affect the audio result in SOME way

This did affect the audio. Before it was broken and not making any output. Now it works and sounds correct. The product has been heard in several prior videos.
