I have 3 plants and they produce 60lbs each. They are about 8 yrs old and stand almost 8ft tall. Last summer the branches had so many berries that they were bent over and laying in the grass. I love picking these because it only takes about 10 mins to get 2 large bowls full.

@@SpiraeaHerbs I make Jelly and Jam out of them. I used to make just Jelly but got lazy a couple of years ago and decided that if you can make Blueberry jam why not aronia jam. So I tried it and thought why have I been going through the trouble of straining the berries out for Jelly? I also like to mix the aronia berries with blueberries and turn them into jam as well. This year I freeze dried a batch and then powdered the berries. I use the powder to make Tea or simply add a scope to some water with ice. Surprisingly, the dried berries are not that tart. I also make pancake syrup out of it. My in-laws love it and always ask me for some when I make it. Last summer, my neighbor went down and picked a bunch and I thought she was going to make jelly or jam out of them. Instead, her and her sister mashed up the berries, boiled them and then used it to tie dye t-shirts. They really turned out cool. The shirts were a dark purple/brown color.

Oh my goodness, finally! I have been trying to ID a shrub of this down by the pond, I have looked at it in every season and not been able to figure it out. I knew it was in the Rosacea family but I was stumped otherwise. This is great!

Beautiful homestead, I live in Southern Nevada and just ordered an aronia i have to order a second one, not sure what variety? I hope they can grow in clay and a lot of sun. Maybe I should shade them?

Mine grow in full sun! I would suggest visiting a local nursery to ask them because I am unfamiliar with your growing climate and zone. Best of luck.

Hi. There are red, purple and black varieties. Does it make a difference in regards to nutrition which colour the berries are?

  • @SpiraeaHerbs

I will be fully transparent and say that I don't know. I would have to research it, but in terms of logical thinking, berries that are red, black and purple all contain anthocyanins. polyphenols and all those beautiful things we are after. If I had to guess, I would say they would be similar.
