I was definitely on the fence about this release, especially since it wasn’t abundantly clear the proper aspect ratio was preserved (and presented for the first time on BD) for this release. Yes, thank you. I've only ever owned the director's cut on VHS (still own, picked up when it came out when I was 15. Was a fan since it came out when I was 9.) than the "bootleg" DVD. And then the scream factory blu ray. My favorite cut now is the international cut. Probably because that was a different transfer. The details are on the box.

I've had the directors cut on full HD open matte for years 1080p I upscaled to 4k it looks phenomenal

Arrived today. Watched it in 4k. Looks great. Watched the directors cut with commentary track and then the TV version. All in one night. Still gotta watch the international cut and dive into all the bonus features with all deleted scenes. This really is the ultimate edition of Army of Darkness. Worth the purchase for sure.

I love both covers but I went with the steelbook. Like you, this is my favorite of the franchise. It doesn’t take itself seriously-and I love that. And it doesn’t dwell too much on the demonic energy that was found in the 1st and 2nd film. Some folks like that heavy demonic touch, but I could do without it. Army of Darkness is a perfect movie for me. It’s cheesy, funny and silly

I completely agree with you👍, both cover artworks are great & also I liked how it’s more a zombie ish 🧟‍♂️ type film with nothing really about the stuff from the first 2 movies! I think Army of Darkness has a completely different feel & energy to the movie than any of the previous films had & does a lot better in the horror comedy realm! I personally didn’t care for the other cuts of Army of Darkness as much as I liked the faster paced theatrical cut & I am glad it got such a nice 4K release. I also agree it’s a fun, cheesy tongue 👅 in cheek film that has a certain old school feel & charm to it!

​​@@InSearchofPhysicalMedia got both cuts of the bluray and love all 4 cuts of the film and think the international and directors cut are the definitive versions with the additive being the director original og ending is not as great as the official canon SSmart ending scene. I prefer the colorization and remaster of the 1080-1999 bluray vs the 4k bluray. Love all the special features period! The new remaster for the theatrical is awesome but the mastering of the bluray is better than the 4k personally but the 4k has the extra content added on the inside of the menus.

​@@InSearchofPhysicalMedia I think this IS a reference quality movie in all 3 cuts in the main cuts its just stylized with its film look but they are all beautifully shot and directed by my favorite director, tied aside George Lucas JJ Abrams and Stephen Spielberg, Sam Raimi!!!!!!!

I saw this movie in 93. Didn't know it was a sequel until I actually bought it. I was just like, it's weird they spent all this money and got Bridget Fonda just to send him back in time. So I figured it was a sequel. And I watched the end credits, and saw "scenes from evil dead 2". Blew my mind. I'm like it's the third one. And all my friends love army of darkness. So I blew all their minds too. Lol.

I get what your saying, initially when I saw Army of Darkness many many years ago I also had not seen Evil Dead 1 or 2 & I didn’t know it was the 3rd movie in a trilogy at first. But I do like this film the best out of all 3 & I feel it’s much more comedic & lighthearted than either of the previous two evil dead movies were! I still think the stop motion skeletons are so cool of a retro effect that add heavily to the charm of this movie 🎥 🍿 Are you planning on ordering the SteelBook or Regular Slipcover edition, what artwork did you like best? 4k version looks so good

I actually am upset. I'm glad I watched this. I kind have grown to love the international cut. Keeps the happy ending but had some of the extra Bad Ash Scenes. International cut on the 2015 scream factory looked so great. I thought that would be on 4k too. I understand what you say about not having all the film elements as to why they didn't do it. What I never understand is why not just put the others on a 4k disc and up scale it; or just use the theatrical cut and go to the other scenes with seamless branching. Arrow does seamless branching for Argento movies all the time for the scenes that are only in Italian. So i know it's possible. Bit rates fluctuating be damned. Maybe that'd be too expensive. I guess if this ever gets a German 4k that would be the international cut I would Imagine? Could always import that and stick it in this set. Oh well at least I'll finally have the theatrical poster to get framed. Theatrical still good too, so that'll be fun on 4k.

Happy my all my hard work in this video was helpful to you & answered a lot of things for you. I get what your saying about how Arrow Video does their releases, but each company does things quite differently & some companies simply don’t like having SD Footage included with 4K Footage because there is a percentage of people who will complain & claim the disc is wrong & that the studio did not do a proper 4K release. So also sometimes studios shy away from messing with stuff like that because of perceived backlash & because a lot of average reviewers who wouldn’t have the understanding or correct knowledge, would have given the set bad reviews because of the SD footage! So there are a lot of moving pieces that I am sure they have to consider along with what I explained in this video! But yes as a collector myself I always wish everything was done on 4K UltraHD, especially I am still waiting for WB to release a complete Christopher Reeves Superman 1-4 Movies 4K UltraHD boxed set with all the extended cuts of Superman 1 & 2. Especially because I know WB has already done most of the work because Warner Archive already released all the Superman 1 extended cuts on Blu Ray with new scans, who knows why Superman gets no love but Everything Batman is always released lol!!! 🤣

The theatrical cut has way better pacing than any other version. I couldn't believe I started getting bored during the epic battle in the end

If only evil dead 1 and 2 had proper uhd transfers including proper hdr grades in the way this film’s uhd blu ray turned out.

True, though because of how they were filmed & poorly stored they most likely will never get amazing/outstanding transfers. But we can always hope for something better lol!!! 😜 Do you have a TOP wishlist movie that you really badly want to be released with a new 4K Scan on 4K UltraHD?

@@InSearchofPhysicalMedia yes the Kevin smith view askewniverse films minus sadly for reasons we all dogma the back to the future trilogy Jurassic park trilogy Austin powers trilogy with the uk updating the first films uk cut terminator 1 and 2 Star Wars both the prequel trilogy and the original trilogy both theatrical and special editions Addams family values and Wayne’s world 2. The reason I bring up the back to the future trilogy terminator 2 and the Jurassic park trilogy and the Star Wars films is because the transfers look bad and would benefit from a new uhd release.

Any chance you do the Evil Dead Groovy Collection?

I have the 2009 and the Blu ray from scream factory. Image looks great, but it's a shame it still doesn't come with the language options from the 2009 version. I'll stick to that whenever I need it for viewing with family. I don't want to buy SF 4k release that should have the previous language tracks.

Thanks again for such a great review, but can anyone please explain to me why shout factory continue to region lock the blu rays that accompany these region free 4K releases. This would have to be one of the most frustrating and unnecessary procedures still practiced by these companies. I live in Australia and every time I see region A locked on a new release, I want to scream whyyyyyyy...... End of rant

Universal doesn't care about the movie. Alot of people seem to forget because they love the movie now or love Evil Dead that Army of Darkness was an absolute flop that cost alot of money to make. At the time alot of people didn't even know that it was a sequel to Evil Dead II, which was also a flop but cost alot less money. I love the series but its never been profitable. The one downside is that because the rights to these movies are a mess and so many people have to give permission for certain things to exist, we get the Groovy Collection, yet it doesn't include specifically Army of Darkness at the very least or also the Evil Dead remake. Something that even Halloween managed to pull off and those rights are almost as messy and Friday the 13th pulled it off between Paramount and New Line.

there is absolutely no universe where there will ever be a 4k cut....The director's cut literally had SD garbage looking scenes sprinkled into the film that are absolutely jarring at first
