The game should set up camps to place on the outskirts of battlegrounds cause if you show up with 70 days left of battle the soldiers should get hungry and tired and lower their fatigue and moral. You can place it maybe with a supplies unit that takes from the town and can make back and forth delivery trips to resupply. This could work even better if the AI had a city on the map that you can siege.

@phineasgage8252 bro that would be great though it would make combat more than point and click and if it's too much it could be added to a harder difficulty mode

Ok so archers have some excellent uses. Namely using small squads of them to lure enemies into a bad position in the early game. The smallest unit size is 5 men. You can get away with a tiny investment of manpower to lure stuff near your home region or other units like maybe mercs etc. Archers also have the lowest armor, therefore the least stamina drain. They are excellent at hopping around to capture cleared camps and all sorts of fun feint luring tactics to get enemies to do even dumber stuff than they already do. Also, have you tried flanking enemies with archer units and firing into their backs? It's actually pretty effective in my experience so far. It's easy to get the small squads early and still use a full other melee unit like the starting spear 20. Simply hire the spear unit, then hire the rest of your open slots as needed, up to 5 other units of whatever you lime. As the new units are hired, it splits the recruit pool down smaller and smaller. Get as close to 5 as possible and see what mischief they can manage. I like to think of them as crack special forces. I also imagine them taunting enemies and stuff. This brings me great joy. :) Oh and if doing this early game once you have lured the enemy to your home region, simply disband the other tiny archer units and keep the small active squad up. This frees up the recruits and gets that starting spear up to the 20 usually. Can easliy take brigands out this way! ^_^
