After 10 years kitefoiling I'm finally going to be picking up winging. A friend has this HS 1850 and suggests it would be a first wingfoil start. I'll have a 99L Armstrong board and I weigh 150lbs

This is a great review of this wing for flat water pumping. But also one of the best reviews of Armstrong gear and why the design is superior to many other brands. It’s why I bought Armstrong and love it so much

Brilliant review! I love when you say "HA ratio is addicting". That so true! But, given the right conditions, low aspect ratio can be just as addicting. You are very precise at specifying what kind of conditions your review is based on. I've been testing/riding Armstrong foils lately and I can't make up my mind which ones I want. The only good answer to that (at least in Maui's extremely various conditions) is: all of them! Cheers!

Thank you, Love the reviews. The 1850 & 1550 are the easiest foils to surf foil so fast and forgiving rare combo. Phil / Inland Sea is great with the Armstrongs. Couple of comments - The HS wings come with the HS 232 tail and using the +1 shim speeds it up a bit. No data like you've done, just experimenting as the crew has been foiling RI/NY/NJ/NC like crazy. The 300 tail has more initial low-end grunt but feels sluggish in the surf.

Thank you, Ryan. I appreciate the comment. I've never played with the shims on Armstrong foils, but have with AXIS foils. I was amazed at how much of a difference it made. What you describe makes sense. I've found the flatter rear wing (less angle of attack) helps speed things up and unload front foot during the pump. I've liked that feeling, but have found if I go too flat, it starts to lose value. Thanks again for your comment.

Fantastic Feedback. I would like to see you test Horue Vini Pro2 - as it seems to be ideal for pumping. (I run with Liquid Force for wake as well as a Manta Ray (Isup) for Wing here in Canada and carefully follow the advancements. I must say you are one of my go2's for unbiased feedback. Huge potential for you to expand your idea across all Foil sectors in testing by including different riders and filmed under your structure.

Excellent reviews. Everything is a compromise, but it's great that both brands are modular, so you can build up your quiver for various sports... prone, winging, kiting. The Kiwi's are leading the way with both these brands.

Thanks for the reply! A few of us are curious how the 120cm wide gong XXL curve would fare compared to your axis as well. Since many are flatter water/ tiny wave foilers maybe a battle of the big foils would be appropriate. Lol Thanks for the great videos

Excellent video as usual thanks a lot! I'll most probably go for the Axis 1150. I see that you did the test with the 370mm rear wing. What would be the Impact/difference with the 460mm or the 400? The glide would be longer and the speed faster with less reactivity on turns/carves? I am convinced about the front wing but still hesitate with the rear one (460/440/400/370). Thanks a lot!

Yes. You got it. I’d look into the 420. I’ve never tried it but I have high hopes as it’s HA so nice lift and low drag but winglets that can help carve.

Great reviews. Most of your vids are comparisons, so curious what top and cruising speeds are on the best high aspect wings. Also, as a fellow engineering type, I wonder what happens if we bumped wing span up to say 48"? Its not far off to imagine comfortable, sustainable pump cruising. 10 years from now someone will have cracked this challenge. Sacrificing carvability for max glide seems fair.

Thanks Erin. I look forward to those days! I can’t imagine a 5+min pump but I also couldn’t imagine a 2+min pump if I rewind to March of this year when I hadn’t even heard of high aspect foil wings. I haven’t tested top end speeds as that hasn’t been an important factor for lake foiling on waves but certainly would matter for winging. I will incorporate the speed I can’t control into my next video. I’m certain a wipeout will take place and I will have you to thank! Thanks for the comment

@@WakeThief That sounds great. What is your guess at cruising speed? Do you know if anyone is trying to find the effective maximum for glide performance using high aspect wingspan? I imagine most designers are trying to make a wing that turns well and still has good lift. I think pump tempo will drop in half with a maximized wing loading. What aircraft have best sink rate? Sailplanes! Even your HA axis wing is still in cessna territory.

You’re right. I know that manufacturers frequently talk about max speed. I see the value for sure regarding surfing big waves in the ocean and for winging. I know I’ve reached 25km/hr behind my jet ski but guessing that’s not fast by winging / surfing standards

@@WakeThief I would really like to see this wing. Same cord as your axis wing with a 56" span. Lots of unidirectional carbon to retain stiffness. I would expect this wing would turn slow and breach a tip easily, BUT glide twice as far per pump.

Another great review! Where would you put the Armstrong 1850 in comparison to the slingshot 84 and 99 in terms of low speed lift, glide and pump?

Thanks for the question, Bryan. I have not specifically compared both on the same day / same conditions, but I believe the 1850 could be pumped very similarly to the 99. I would expect the 1850 to glide a bit further and that they’d have similar low speed lift, but can’t be sure without trying both next to one another.

I currently own the slingshot 84 and am looking for a higher performance upgrade that will also get me out in lighter winds while winging. The Axis looks fantastic but I'd like something that's a little easier to carve. The 1850 just might be the ticket! Keep up the good work. Your scientific approach when comparing foils is appreciated.

Have you tried wing foiling yet? I vaguely remember some comments saying that you live up by Alex Bay, but I saw one clip on Round Lake. I live in the Albany area and have a 120L wing board and some Wasps. You are welcomed to borrow them if you’d like. Round Lake is a great place to go winging if there is a south wind (despite some millfoil).

What's your weight? Do you want to surf many wakes back? What is your skill level? Do you have past experience wakeboarding, surfing, skateboarding? Thanks!

I've got the HS1850 and still in the learning phase of pumping, doing it behind the boat on the side of the wake, trying to keep the rope slack. Would the HA1125 make it easier to "learn" the finesse of pumping (as you say HA wings are easier to pump)? Or would it be too difficult to learn the basics of pumping on a high aspect wing?

This is a super smart question. I don't have an answer, but I will take a guess (which could be wrong). HA wings are easier to pump once you get the hang of them, but my advice is to get good on this wing (mid aspect-ish) and switch to HA later. The 1125 is a wing I will try soon. Because it has lower area, you will have to fly faster (pump at a higher speed). Without knowing the 1125 foil section and how it compares to 1850, my guess is that the 1850 is a wing that you can pump longer/farther, but I could be wrong ... and may eat my words after I try the 1125. The area of the 1125 is pretty low. In short, the 1850 is a great wing to learn to pump on. When you hit one minute, and might want to pump longer, then explore an HA wing. If you're not already there, it might give me a chance to review the 1125 and give you better advice. Please reach out with any more questions. wakethief@icloud.com

I do. 1125 was amazing behind our jet ski but the extra hard carving I wanted to do behind the boat took some getting used to with the mast.

@@WakeThief Thanks WT. Yes, the current Armstrong mast design struggles to keep up with the loads produced by HA wings, a beefed-up HA version mast is necessary to fix this.

Would you say Armstrong HS1550 would be too short for your body weight?

For what I like to do, yes. The area of the foil (1550sqcm in the case of the 1550) determines the speed at which you take off. At my weight of 190lb, I'd need a fair bit of speed to fly which means it's harder to dock start (need to hit the water at a higher speed) and it won't pump for as long because you need to pump faster and exert more energy.

I’m confused. All I’ve ridden are armstrong foils. So the front wing always refers to the area of the wing. I assumed other companies did the same. Why name a wing 1150 if it has no relationship to area? Is it a random model number? Or does it refer to something else? Confusing.

Just a different nomenclature. The 1150 has 1150mm of wingspan (and 1700sqcm area). Axis uses wingspan. Armstrong uses area.

Thanks Aaron! I will try to get it. It might be a bit small, area wise for me at 190lb to break my 2.5min personal best pumping record but I will try. I wish they made one that was 2000sqcm instead of 1125sqcm (at same aspect ratio). That would be a solid contender.
