Armrests on Classical Guitars

Armrests: Love them. The idea seemed undesirable to me at first because the armrest further extends the guitar outward away from the shoulder(only millimetres though) which is an ergonomic problem for some people so at first I didn’t want one. However, after having armrests on my last two guitars I found it more comfortable on my arm. The smoother edge is also better for moving the forearm up or down the instrument without as much friction when making right hand adjustments. The idea of the arm muting the soundboard does make sense, although I do wonder if it’s significant enough to be noticed.

Wish I knew about armrest sooner. I added one to my guitar really helps especially with my poor blood circulation.

Ive always hated that reaching feeling you said that you feel armrests extend it! I feel like I still cant find a comfy position for my right arm that doesn't feel like im messing up my right shoulder blade or rounding my shoulder. Your videos are great though and have helped some with what im talking about, but I was curious if you have any tips about what you mentioned, thanks!

There are a lot of Taylor's that have built in armrests even on some of their entry level guitars like their Academy Series that go for about $650.

I don't know what they are like as an instrument, but Kantare Guitars from Finland all have arm rests built in.

Great video! I've been seeing some Taylor steel-string guitars with arm rests lately - but they're way overpriced in my opinion. Might as well get a custom handmade instrument at that price point.

Barnett made one that attached with rare earth magnets--just as his guitar support did. I've never seen one, but the idea is intriguing.

Are armrest mainly on lattice braced guitars, or are they on both latticed and fan braced guitars?

The brace design doesn't affect it at all. It's really just glued onto the outside of the instrument.

There’s another trainer/performer that says nerve damage (after many years of resting one’s forearm on the upper bout while playing) will happen.

I find that hard to believe if one uses proper technique. The arm shouldn't be pressing down hard, just gently resting. And as always, take breaks during long practice sessions.

Summary = Armrest have noticeable benefits like: Comfort, Sound, Smoothness in sliding your arm. Bad points = Cost, aesthetics, time to install. Overall the good outweigh he bad.

Are arm rest installed by a double sided sticker? If im correct, is it possible to damage the finish of your guitar?

  • @Thisisclassicalguitar

My armrest was made for the guitar by the luthier at the time of the initial construction so it's permanently glued on there and likely under the finish.

You really need it if you're playing on a double top guitar not that it doesn't help in other cases.
