    Man, I really wish they still made these. I’ve always wanted an AR10 A2 with the green furniture. Very nice rifles you have!

    From personal experience in 1994, sending M14 magazines for conversion by Armalite was a chore and a test of patience. You sent them the magazines, received no confirmation of arrival and then the wait began. After 6 months of waiting I called to ask about the status. That took multiple calls and most common answer was "Yes we received them. No we haven't started them, yet. Right now we're try to include a 20 round mag with every new firearm sold. Would you like to buy another AR10?" As an FFL dealer at the time I sold a lot AR10's (it was a good product, even with neutered / 94 compliance features) but it was a chore dealing with the person in sales /service. Almost a year went by before the mags finally showed up.

    The old Armalite website had a wealth of supplementary data concerning best practices, ammo performance, break-in, etc. Those tech notes were my introduction to the AR.

    Finally I see my rifle! Thank you! I have the "Eagle Arms/Armalite AR-10B" in the vault, which came with a linear comp, but replaced with a 3-prong flash hider. The one mag with it has the spring loaded bolt hold open as yours do. Brownell's has Armalite mags specifically for the "B" with a modified follower for the bolt hold open that also work. After building the wife an AR-15 and firing the first time I noticed the wear from the bolt cam pin inside the upper receiver and put in a Patriot Ordinance Factory roller cam pin. It works so well I talked to them about their .308 version roller cam and was told it just drops in. I want to save the old rifle from more wear. The roller cam pin does indeed drop in without removing the gas key and has enough thickness to ignore the worn groove in the upper. I recommend it as a cheap way to protect the old girl. I also installed a JP Enterprises polished, tuned (?) rifle length buffer spring, a P.O.F. "Archangel" ambi charging handle, an ambi safety from JoebobOutfitters along with some anti-rotation struts on hammer and trigger to save the lower. I could use the standard AR size with no play. I did put on a see-through handle mount rail with a TRS-25 3-mil (good enough for me) red dot. Some prior owner had installed a weird Pachmayr grip composed of a steel block in place of the A2 grip with what looks for all the world like a Colt Python grip! It was obviously manufactured for the rifle and I like it too much to go stock (unless I had to carry the thing too far because it probably adds a pound). Imagine my surprise with NO AR-10 experience to find the takedown pin is retained by the grip too! All the original parts, with spares, are in ziplocs in the A2 storage compartment for posterity. This is a sweet shooting, SENSIBLE rifle and now I know "AR" really means "Armalite Rifle". I'm glad I didn't go with an M-14 semi copy.

    I purchased the DPMS Recon G2 7.62 /.308 a couple of years ago thinking I was purchasing a fairly long range rifle based upon the caliber, right? Wrong. I’ve given up, removed the $500 Vortex optics, and reinstalled the Magpul pop ups. I’m the “proud “ owner of a very expensive 100 yard rifle. Expensive lesson learned.

    Excellent video - very informative. Like you, I appreciate the ability to go "old school and use iron sights as an alternative to optics. Do you know anyplace to get an upper like the one on your rifle? I'd probably prefer a flat-top and put a removable carry handle sight on it, rather than have a permanent one. Otherwise, what you have is pretty ideal. But Armalite isn't making these anymore. Any ideas for alternatives, or do you have to get into a DPMS or other pattern of receiver for that?

    Very informative video, and terrific camera work! I had a question for you: do you subscribe to the Armalite AR10 "breaking in" protocol, i.e. taking a brand new weapon, firing one round, letting it cool to room temp, thoroughly cleaning the barrel, and doing the same for 10 rounds? I think I read that somewhere. Thanks and again, great video! I love my AR10A4!

    It depends on the rifle barrel. I would recommend it for a match grade barrel as it makes them easy to clean as breaking them in creates less burrs while maintaining great accuracy. Trying to break in a chrome lined barrel might not be so important. I've tried breaking these in and didn't get much copper fouling out when cleaning. This tells me that they are about as good as they are going to get and that the chrome is harder to lap in with the break in. Hope this helps.

    Have you seen this? The holy grail has been to get this caliber to function reliably in an AR. Uses an AR10 platform. Olympic Arms had the UMAR but it never seemed to have caught on. Not sure how reliable it is. kzread.info/dash/bejne/fYmOrNqBpKfHe9I.html www.olyarms.com/shop/rifles/umar-rifles.html Haha. Kind of have to laugh because my AR15s even being flat tops have carry handles with a thru rail mount and removable optics. I can shoot both scope and irons. Old school.

    It was pointed out to me that the commercial Colt AR 15 parts manual refers to the "birdcage" muzzle device as a "flash hider". My apologies, I didn't think there was a difference. Anyone that's been through boot camp will tell you that the Colt M16A2 service rifle (property US Government) that was issued to them by the Marine Corps, was without question equipped with a compensator. I can't speak for every branch of the military, but every DI aboard MCRD San Diego and Parris Island, every armorer in the FMF and every grunt in the 5th Marines refers to it as a compensator. In fact it would be unwise to call it a flash hider in a DI's presence. I've fired thousands of rounds through that rifle and it isn't much for hiding a flash, even with a BFA. If you do find yourself engaging targets at night, and you can see what you're shooting at, I would typically save my left eye to prevent night blindness. The M1 Carbine and the Lee Enfield jungle to mention a few, had a conical flash hider to help prevent night blindness. I know STA platoon has a few tricks to conceal muzzle signatures (day and night). I don't want to get into a pissing contest, but I just can't call a magazine a clip, a mainspring housing/grip safety a backstrap, or a compensator a flash suppresor. It certainly does sound more sinister though. The guy that did this video seems fairly knowledgeable and that comment struck me as curious. Thanks for the feedback.

  • @echodelta2172

    @echodelta2172

    @@citychick4154 No, they wouldn't. You're full of hot air and literally nobody would call the A2 Flash hider a "compensator" unless they're a grunt that's never handled one outside of service. Also, congrats on your outdated military experience and jargon, military armorers rarely know jack shit about the weapons they're servicing outside of how to take them apart and put them back together. Don't try the "I was in the military" card, most people on this channel have been, and we know how little most troops know about guns.
