ARMA Reforger | The Future of the Arma Series

Ойындар

It's finally here - Arma Reforger is available today in early access, and Bohemia let us have an early look at it. It's still a testbed and clearly in the early days, but to see the foundation upon which a new Arma will be built is very, very cool.
I am currently down with the sickness (yes that one, no I'm not typing it out because of YT's bots), so this edit was a bit more strained than usual and I'm not sure if I'll even be awake or in any state to stream, but I hope you enjoy what I managed to put out regardless. I'm gonna go curl up in a ball of blankets now.
The two fellow creators who appeared in the Conflict section were:
Drewski: / operatordrewski
Karmakut: / karmakut
Music:
All of the music used in this video came from Bohemia, either tracks specifically for Reforger or Reforger variants of old classic Arma tracks.

The modding scene for this game is going to be absolutely ballistic. Just having all these smooth fundamentals and QOL improvements means people can do so much more and with less effort to make it work with basegame systems.

@@45hopefull Do not be surprised if Bohemia files cease and desist against zombie mods for encroaching on DayZ. They are pretty cool about modders, but when you can get ArmA 4, and then get a zombie mod, that makes DayZ effectively redundant. Game Devs have done that in the past.

fun fact, the burst quirk of the M-16 you showed is unique to the M-16A2, it was a requirement for the A4 to have the system reset the burst mechanism if a partial burst was fired, and other burst fire weapons of the time had a reset implimented

There was a simple logistics one on Arma 2 and 3 on capture the island game modes. I play a lot of Capture the island and what I'm glad about this new engine is that it looks like we can have over 100 Ai's in one battle without losing any frames. we can finally play a proper RTS, spamming armor and infantry into town while hitting it with artillery using AI, and looks like it'll still run smoothly

That transition in movement speed is so damn smooth - You don't just increase your "walking mode" speed and once you reach a certain threshold instantly switch into "running mode". I am very excited for the next game but the only two things I am worried about are a lack of single-player content and the inventory system. If you are in the middle of a firefight, you are not going to mess around with squares in your inventory. You would just chuck it in your bag and go. The single-player content is kind of a small thing considering how Reforger is a bridge to Arma 4, but the inventory system could be a thing that turns people away.

With the workshop as evidence, they probably realised that a great deal of their players and content creators are continuing to play Arma 3 because of the mods, and that by providing more options for these mod creators the mods will be better and more numerous allowing for more replay value in later titles. An outstanding looking mod reflects well on the creators of the base game as well, and can be good for attracting more players to the game. It also just plain makes the game better too, so there's that.

Not only this, but limited amounts of games on console can be easily modded, and I know of atleast 5 people, plus myself, who have out thousands of hours into the moddable games because of how much content there will be for it simply due to the community. Knowing the Arma community is very big into modding and realism, getting a niche game series finally on console like this, and having a workshop space for more content and possible community mods, this could be a huge boon that drives more people into playing it.

I've heard some fairly mixed opinions regarding Reforger but I genuinely think this is the best direction the Arma series can take. Arma 3 wasn't very intuitive a lot of the time, so a base game thats easier to onboard people onto without having to download a bunch of "necessary" mods is only a good thing. And, with the improved modding tools, anything that you don't like will be much easier to change. E.g. I personally don't like the lack of an interface for the radios, but I'm sure at some point the community will come out with a mod to rectify that. Even if I don't play much Arma these days, I've still bought this game to support BI and the development of Arma 4 - a vote of confidence if you will.

I wouldn't be shocked if BI won't allow mods that possibly infringe on copyright on their internal mod launcher, or at the very least, will kill any mod if it's pointed out to them by the IP holder. Fine enough if the Steam workshop keeps going/other methods of modding are available, and GW doesn't decide that allowing the fan mods is a risk to their IP/income. My overall point is that GW has demonstrated that it's hostile to fan content that isn't made on their terms.

Get well soon, Rimmy! The biggest problems I've always had with the previous ARMA games have been the poor performance, even on beefy setups, and the movement, which feels remarkably unnatural. Immersive, perhaps, but lacking in smoothness and polish. Now, while I would admit that it helps ARMA stand out from the generic military-themed-shooter crowd, I would insist that the camera feeling as though it's locked half a foot in front of your character's face, no matter what he's doing, is very uncomfortable. You can really feel it if you're moving forward and turn to the left or right, or even if you're standing still, it's almost nauseating. If the movement systems can be refined to feel more natural, or at the very least more comfortable, I'd happily dive into the series again. I've had hundreds of hours in ARMA 2's CTI maps alone, and been a part of a few big ops in 3, there's really not many games like it out there. And of course, if performance can be improved, that would make it even better.
