The Morriseys sang it, I think, original song about the Jacobite rebellion in Scotland by bonnie prince Charlie in the 1740s, used in the June 1981 general election when C J came within a few hundred votes of holding power, losing just 4 seats, the h block candidates and the stardust disaster postponing the FF Ard dheis were contributing factors for falling short

  • @cahillgreg

Simply because the sheer scale of his corruption exceeded most others (proportionately greater risk of being exposed) & occupying the highest office in the land brought a greater degree of scrutiny. He was an incorrigible charlatan who fell so far that he had to step down.

It's an Irish song which was written by an Irish folk band in support of a politician (Charlie Haughey) of one of Ireland's political parties as an election campaign song. I think he was the prime minister at the time running for re-election in 1981.

there are areas i disagree with Haughey on (mainly his push on the euro), and lets face it he was a man who liked to look after himself too lol but i cant help but love him, his political story was Shakespearean and he was one of the few heads of state we had who had vision (a lot of which doesn't get talked about), i know the 80s were a very tough time (the FF later PD traitors didnt help) but Hughey tried to bring Hibernia into the future even if he needed to do it kicking and screaming. hopefully someday we see a leader with at least his drive and vision again here. hail the leader, hail the man
