As always, light blue means ringing, green means grounded, yellow means free, and red means none of the above.

@Illuminate Light yeah for sure. so think of the voice as its own body. yes, im asking you to visualize the voice (all parts that make or help to make sound: larynx or voice box, lungs, vocal cords) as this vessel that changes the color of sounds that descend or ascend throughout the body. that being said, let's give each section that helps to define voice its own color. for instance, head (cranium) section is colored blue. chest section is colored red. the midway point, let's call it the "chead" section is colored yellow. each color, each section comes with a not so visual sound color. the head (blue) section has a hollow, more haunting, or empty sound. the chest (red) section has a more full and forward sound. and the midway (yellow) section has qualities/characteristics of both. as the voice lives in the chest (red) area, it has lower, fuller, darker sounds. as one would expect, the head (blue) section would have the complete opposite: higher, brighter, thinner sounds. and that leaves the midway (yellow) section to have a mixture of characteristics from both the blue and the red section since it sits right in the middle acting as a passageway from one point to the other. you say, "there's no such thing as chesty or heady," in your claim above, which is false when talking in terms of vocal color, which is what the person who initiated this comment section thread was trying to say. to repeat, not saying that you believe this, but to anyone else who might or who skims this and think that we're trying to bash Ariana, we're not. its a simple vocal analysis. head voice is the second highest register that the human voice can make. whistle register is the highest, though it is separate from the voice in a sense. all "high" notes produced by any human are in some relation to the head voice register. as all low or chestier notes are related to chest/modal voice. @Clint Easton claims that if Ariana were to use more of a headier mix on notes passed G#5, she'd have easier access and perhaps would even obtain the note B5 or notes higher: 6th octave notes. naturally, 6th octave notes live in the head voice or whistle register, which in this case, we are sticking with head voice terminology. well, think of it. since 6th octave notes' home is the head voice, wouldn't it make sense that in order to BELT higher and easier, the notes would have to take on some of these head voice qualities? which in turn makes them sound heady? that's where the terms heady and chesty originate from. as notes move higher, they take on more head (blue) qualities and as they move lower they take on more chest (red) qualities. this is very true, however, every singer is different. some don't like for their belting notes to sound heady, as it makes them sound light and without power (Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Demi Lovato), while others work for this lighter take (Amber Riley, Ariana Grande), and others work for more of a middle, like Tori Kelly or JoJo (which is what Ariana is trying to do nowadays when compared to her earlier years, look at Pink Champagne in 2011-2012 versus her more recent performances of the song). also, sometimes, whether a singer sounds more headier or chestier in their belting range is out of their control - puberty, birth, maturation, etc. @Illuminate Light you say the existence of chesty or heady terminology, functions "contradicts how the voice works" when that is the complete opposite. it makes absolutely no sense for you to make a claim like that and further proves your lack of knowledge in regards to the voice and its function when singing. this is not me belittling you or trying to embarrass you. i simply hope that through this lengthy explanation that you understand a little bit more about the voice, and in return, Ms. Grande and other celebrity singers.

Exactly! If she had poor or subpar technique, her voice would wear off very quickly and she wouldn't be able to do the crazy touring she does. Not to mention, she was SICK for SEVERAL dates of her several tours and maintained access to 90% of her full vocal range. I don’t think people get how hard is is to sing with most of your voice intact while sick with a cold or any illness that involves lots of coughing, sneezing, and hoarseness. Viral illnesses like the flu or common colds are considered DEATH to the voice for most singers. Many of the examples of grounded and/or ringing notes here were sung while she was SICK. And aside from one vocal injury in 2013 caused by screaming too much with not enough rest (Ariana’s own words) she has not had a single vocal issue requiring medical attention due to singing or touring. As much singing as she does, this is definitive proof that her technique is perfectly sound. People need to check their brains.

Because most people think that these "technique rules" is a dogma. they think if one doesn't do a great job adhering to these rules he/she would be considered as the lesser singer. This black and white way of thinking is just stupid. They failed to realize that there's a variable called "individualisation" which basically means that every person is unique, what's "unhealthy" technique for a lot of people DOESN'T mean it's also unhealthy for some people. So people should just STFU and let Ariana decide for herself which technique is good or bad, what works or what doesn't, what's unhealthy or healthy.

I'm not a fan but holy shit i can appreciate her raw talent. In the West the term "once in a generation" was close to being accurate but isn't anymore. Whitney followed by Mariah followed by Beyonce followed by Ariana. Named these artists because they all have 4-5 octave range as soprano's. All legends minus Ariana because she still has a ton to offer. I'm sure that before she passes on the torch she will be remembered as a legend too. I'm also aware there are similar vocal powerhouses that i didn't mention.

People say “it’s because she has ease on upper belts” but that still means if she was straining so much she would lose some of her belting range and she hasn’t and ease can only take u so far.

She acquired a better mix not as chesty as at the start of her career. She released some throat tension as well and now simply shines up there. Her B5s are not that good though. In my opinion G5s and G#5s are her strongest notes.

@Onur It does. Naturally the lower notes will have to take more effort than the higher notes. For example In Defying Gravity naturally the F5 belt would be harder to hit because its a high note but the sustained C#5’s are the hardest because U literally need to keep your breath the same from beginning to end and also U just belted a F5 in one breath then sustain a C#5 in another. The C#5 is harder than the F5 belt

Plus, if she were straining as much as people claimed, her voice would wear off very quickly and she wouldn’t be able to do all the touring and singing she does. She’s been singing since she was a teenager and has had an international touring career for half of her career. Those tours are very stressful on the body and voice and yet, she’s never had to cancel a tour date due to vocal injury. She’s even performed while really sick and still had most of her voice intact. That can only happen when your voice is in top shape and your technique is solid.

Ariana Grande Vocal Analysis (2024) Voice type: Light-Lyric Soprano Vocal range: C3-B5-E7 (4 octaves and 2 notes) Range with the most consistent quality, comfort, and technique: G3-C#5/D5-A5 At best: F3-F5-C6 Lower register: (7/10) Low notes are bright and clear and have a good projection up to G3 consistently and F3 at best. Quite surprising for someone with a high tessitura considering her high sitting voice. However, she loses consistency, projection, and becomes airy and weak F3 and below. Mid-belts and mix: (7.5/10) Mid belts are surprisingly strong for someone who frequently utilizes a heady mix in her belts. Her approach in her mid-belts during her later years (2019 onwards) is more balanced compared to her honeymoon era (2014-early 2016) where her approach is more heady and dangerous woman era (late 2016-2017) where her approach is chestier. She has good control over her mid-belts and it is more balanced, consistent, accessible, and more tensionless than people assume resulting in an open, free, well-projected, and controlled sound consistently from G#4 to D5 especially from Bb4 to C5 at her best. She definitely improved this part of her voice over the years. Upper-belts/mix: (7/10) As a soprano like her, her ease and control in this area are good. She may not be the very best and the pinnacle of upper-belting out there, as some of her diehard fans tend to believe, but her consistency and stamina in this area is no joke. Although not consistently, she produces the best and balanced quality from Eb5-F5. As she goes higher beyond F5, she tends to sound thinner but still often avoids straining and too much tension up to G#5 (her signature upper-belting/mix note). However, she loses consistency when she reaches A5 and above which can sometimes be prone to tension, although this doesn't happen much as she was still able to possess a decent quality of mix up to Bb5 especially in her be my baby and breathin performances most of the time. This ease and consistency in her upper-belting range is due to her heady approach with her mix and mixed-belts. Nowadays, she utilizes a more balanced approach (balanced head and chest mix) to her upper-belts/mix especially in her thank u, next and yours truly era. This balanced approach is evidently showcased especially in her sweetener tour and 2023 yours truly 10 year anniversary live performance where she produced a decent but balanced mix. Although she has improved this part of her voice over the years, it has always been consistent in quality and technique with minor flaws and inconsistencies. Upper-register (head voice and falsetto): (7.5/10) Contrary to popular belief, Ariana utilizes her head voice just as much as she utilizes her falsetto. Her falsetto is probably one of the best that pop music has to offer. It is polished, smooth, controlled, and easily accessible. On the other hand, her head voice is also good and is consistently well-coordinated and connected up to A5. Performances such as moonlight, thinkin bout you, be alright, get well soon, and many more including song covers such as no one mourns the wicked and I wanna dance with somebody showcases her control and consistency in her head voice. She may not possess the best and most developed head voice in the music industry, but she can still keep up. Her head voice possesses a bright, strong, and roundness quality consistently up to F#5 and sometimes up to A5. However, her head voice can sometimes sound airy which limits her true potential. Further analysis with her head voice after the wicked (2024) movie will come out with her role as Glinda the good witch. Vocal Agility: (7.5/10) This may be the vocal skill she possess that has consistently improved over the years. She may not be as good as the best riffers out there like Mariah Carey, Tori Kelly, Beyonce, JoJo, and many others, but her vocal agility is definitely above average and is an integral part of her singing style. She can consistently execute vocal riffs and runs that are precise, fast, and complex with good creativity and musicality. The only downside is that there are few performances where she sounds pitchy and unstable and her vocal runs are sometimes repetitive. Lastly, during her early years, she tends to move her jaw a lot and fortunately, she got rid of that habit almost entirely. Whistle register: (9.5/10) One of the best whistle register user in her generation. Able to control her whistle with ease and is also able to create vocal runs and vocal phrases with it. Vocal Dynamics: (6.5/10) She has showcased vocal dynamics from time to time where she sang from pianissimo up to fortissimo. This is greatly showcased in her 2023 yours truly 10 year anniversary live performance. However, there are very rare cases of her showcasing crescendo and decresendo. Vibrato: (10/10) Her vibrato is one of the most controlled and well-developed that pop music has to offer. It can range from soft/subtle to aggressive/intense and can even shift to it smoothly. This great vibrato is also evident throughout all her register especially in her belts and upper-register. Vocal transition: (9/10) Able to easily and smoothly transition between registers from chest to head to whistle and with great control. Pitch: (8/10) Her wide vocal range allows her to hit high notes and low notes with good pitch accuracy. She rarely gets off-key and goes sharp/flat. Vocal stamina: (9/10) She is able to consistently perform in long periods and still able to maintain a decent to good technique and quality while doing a bunch of adlibs. The disadvantages she has with her stamina are the very few vocal performances where her voice got exhausted performing long periods and minor inconsistencies with some of her live vocal performances. Note: this analysis is based on an educated opinion and knowledge about vocals and music. Hence, this analysis is based on what I hear from the vocalist's live performances throughout the years. So feel free to politely disagree. Overall: 8.04/10 Overall comment: She is not as bad as critics say she is and also not as great as diehard fans made her out to be. Her development is distributed fairly evenly throughout range with her mid-belts and upper-register being currently the most developed register. Her major weakness may be that she tends to sing beyond her range with the most consistent quality, comfort, and technique. Fortunately, notes beyond her consistent range are rarely strained, tensed, or weak. Lastly, her biggest asset may be her whistle register, musicality/creativity, vocal stamina, vocal transition, and vibrato. At the end of the day, Ariana Grande is rather a stylistic vocalist with an adequate vocal technique and skill to back up her singing style. She tends to change her singing style depending on the era that she's in.

D6???? That’s very VERY impressive. I had no clue she could reach D6, like I thought her highest mixed note was B5 I mean it sounded like there was a little bit of strain in that D6 but that was still amazing. Ariana Grande is an amazing singer!❤️

Y'all, I have questions (Camila joined the chat lol jk) lmaoo, how would/do you recognize which of the belts are ringing, or grounded or whatever? What does ringing, grounded, free or none of the above mean? Is it like, ringing = resonant, grounded = larynx is well placed or something/not strained or tense, free = ...? lol idk and red = tensed/pushed/strain? And how do notes change from grounded or free to none of the above or ringing real quick like in the G5 examples lol? Damn I sound like a clown y'all loll 💀💀💀💀

Wait... So the G#5 in "Focus" at AMA 2015 was what they'd call a -resonant- belt? So my initial assumption when I first got into vocal pedagogy was correct all along?! 😂 BTW, if Ari's this consistent up to G#5 / A5, does this imply that she can reach Whitney's level of proficiency (belting wise) if her full potential is realised? 🤯 🤔
