    (My insta is @camden.epperson if you want a faster reply to questions/comments!) *Edits/Updates:* 1. There was an editing mistake in the whistle section, the top right corner was supposed to change! The correct scoring is at the beginning of the whistle notes section. 2. I did find a same note transition at the end of diamonds are a girls best friend but i forgot to update the text, so her scoring is right in the vocal control section!

    Ariana is one of the best young vocalists under the age of 30. She has grown since her debut and she's continuing to improve. Her technique is great contrary to popular belief. People need to throw away the idea that she has bad technique, she strains above B4, and that she has no head voice. Her voice is very free throughout the fifth octave. She knows exactly what she's doing with her voice. She makes the conscious decision when to belt and mix when she needs to. She has great coordination over her voice and that's a sign of healthy technique. So when people say that ease isn't everything that's stupid and contradictory. Ease is very essential to healthy singing. The point of practicing healthy singing is to have total ease where one doesn't have to think about it. That's the whole point. The whole point of easy and healthy singing is to do it with repetition and she does that very well. She doesn't have any major vocal issues that resulted in having any serious vocal injuries. The fact that her upper belt/mix is consistently free up to G5/G#5 proves that. It's free of any serious form of tension, strain, discomfort, and pain. It's silly how people draw conclusions about her technique even when it can easily. She has some vocal flaws with tongue and jaw tension but it's not anything major. It would only be a major issue if it compromised her ability to sing on a consistent basis. A little bit of tension is necessary to belt up there. No belt is ever without any form of tension. Belting involves compression and subglottal pressure. Unnecessary tension and constriction is dangerous to one's vocal health and longevity so it's really stupid to say she strains above B4. People really misuse the word support and strain heavily. People have to realize that singing is a mental and physical thing. It involves muscle memory. She's consciously aware of what she's doing what her voice and her muscle memory that she has is proof of that. She goes for those high belts with great ease and freedom because she has great technique, she has great coordination, and her muscle memory is on point. Her breath management is pretty flawed but she made some improvements in that department. Another misconception is that she has no head voice. Just because her head voice doesn't sound like Beyoncé or Whitney doesn't mean that she doesn't use head voice. She is using head voice with a lighter coordination and she adds air to her head voice to make it sound very pretty and light. There are different head voice coordinations and she's using an upper head voice. Falsettos are very breathy and quiet. She's not using falsetto in these clips. You can still hear a formant in her upper register and that should indicate that she's using head voice. Her whistles are really good and I'm glad that she's using them a little more. Her agility is insane and she makes great use of it. Her dynamics are good but I think she should explore more with it. A total free range of E3~Bb5~F6 is amazing. Ariana slays!

    Edu Aguayo there are different terms of support, what you’re referring to is breath support, the technical term isn’t just about breath support, because you can have great breath support and strain. Her biggest problem is her jaw tension which prohibits her from supporting most notes above C#5/D5 and occasionally Eb5.

    She has amazing mix. She intrigues me like Celine dion, because they both raise their larynx but have amazing ease, making me question support. But I wonder if you put reverb into account, but most of her upper belts have reverb. You can obviously hear her larynx up, but that is not always a bad thing. I don’t know what I feel about her being free in her belts, but anyways, good video.

    Ring isn't necessary for pop singers, that's true what you said about reverb. But high larynx, if you actually read vocal pedagogy book, is a necessary condition for belting, Ariana is a belter hence she just has to use high larynx position. It's physically impossible to belt as high as she with neutral or low larynx. Physically impossible. Ariana has insane amount of skill, ease AND her voice didn't deteriorate despite all the beliefs. So she must be doing something right

    One thing she needs to learn is to keep her voice connected, the entire training process on that would improve her entire singing ability, so that 'lighter coordination' won't be used as an excuse for why she leaks air while singing in headvoice, the example showcasing her belting in 3 different coordinations proves this, while chesty she stays connected, while even she stays connected, but heady and all the air escapes like she's whispering, may be the reason for lack of impressive sustains

    Once she improves her enunciation and gets rid of some of the vocal tension that is sometimes present while singing higher notes (since she's in her prime and is also in the middle of improving her technique, these improvements probably won't take long to make for someone as talented and dedicated as herself), she'll definitely be one of the best vocalists in the world. She'll officially be considered one of the divas... like Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, etc...

    Great compilation of clips you have! 👍🏻 Was hoping you'd put her singing in the show "Kidding" to demonstrate the different textures of her belting though. =P Aside from that, I do have a couple of remarks: 1. Even though I love Ari's clean and effortless high belts in "Focus", I personally wouldn't describe any of them as ringing, since the difference between the best attempts (ringing) and the decent ones (grounded) is mainly the audio quality - which leads to me believing that it could be caused by reverb. 2. You listed her E6 as inconsistently free but there's only one clip where she hit a strained note - I have heard her sounding pushed or going flat on E6 several times so it would be better if you included a few of those examples. Nonetheless, your research and editing skills are commendable! 😄 I'm looking forward to start my research/analysis on Lady Gaga and Katy Perry when I have my semester break in December. 😏

Anyways, I'm loving the video, I expected nothing less of you ❤

    Definitely one of the best singers right now with Tori, Demi, Jessie. And she has improved a LOOT. Some points: 1) I don’t think she “rings” as much as you showcased. Some notes, I agree on primarily the C5 in “The Wizard And I”, however even if she has shown that capability, she is not consistent on it, especially not on the 5th octave. I would score most notes you counted as ringing, grounded. 2) Those Touch It C5s, are the best C5s I have heard from her yet. Now, if you use the term “free” as of freedom in her range, which includes consistency, I agree with you 100%. She has so much freedom, consistency and ease up there. However, if you mean “free” as in no tension whatsoever , I disagree on most belted notes. She shows significant jaw tension, and a bad posture (mostly her neck) which can make her whole area from her throat to her whole mouth (tongue, neck) tight, as of lack in back space. Posture is crucial to even speaking, let alone singing, something I learned in therapy for my nodules, as my own mistake I did, which caused my condition. 3) I pretty much agree with everything else. Her lows, upper register, agility, transitions, EVERYTHING was shown fairly. I congratulate you on your HARD work in this 40 minute video, and I admire your objectivity and sense of fairness. Can’t wait for Vanessa, Beyonce and Empress Whitney, which you said you’ll do.🤗🤗

    Definitely one of the best of this generation; I mean just take a look at the Billboard Hot 100, she's effortlessly outsinging over 96% of the singers on there right now. P.S. Please what does "ringing" specifically mean in this new system because if it's what I've known (what many call resonance) then she doesn't have it in most of her belts. In addition to this, what does "free" mean; I'm asking because quite a number of these notes had significant tension eg. Jaw tension, neck tension, tongue tension, shoved larynx but were counted as "free". Also, since a lot of Ariana's falsetto notes were counted as head voice, will Mariah, Leona, Christina Aguilera etc. head voice also be counted as head voice?

    I won't be using the term falsetto in my system because it feels unnecessary to differentiate (when most falsetto is going to be free anyways) so yes, falsetto will be called head voice for them as well! Also, ringing can be subtle in this system, it doesn't have to be booming like the famous resonant ones are. Free is explained at the beginning!

    I’m confused on why “ringing, grounded and free” are vocal highlights of someone’s voice to be considered into a vocal range video....especially one where technique is considered. Your definitions of grounded and ringing seem like knock off definitions for support and resonance. Some notes listed here for ringing for example are not resonant because her tongue sounds like it’s blocking her notes or she does not have enough space to allow the sound to escape, not saying that you were listing it as resonant though because you clearly had it listed as ringing but why is the ringing of her voice even important if it’s not resonance. Vice versa with grounded she has a pretty good home base for technique probably because of her broadway background but a lot of notes listed for grounded are not supported and again you clearly listed them as what they are “grounded and ringing” not “supported or resonant” so i can’t compare but i guess my question is why are we short coming vocal traits of vocalist and minimizing it to knock off terminology’s to boost there appearance vocally to people ?

    Support - breath management technique. Ring/resonance - a specific acoustic coupling which is not even audible on recordings unless your ears are trained to hear those overtones (Ariana doesn't do this nor 99% of contemporary singers do). Grounded - core to the sound. I do not really agree with all the terms he used here but it is still way more correct than what the voodoo side of the vocal community is spewing.

  • @vocallover2197

    @vocallover2197

    @@KajiVocals but support is not just a breath management technique when talking about a “supported note” it means proper breath is being used to support the note where the air does the work for you to produce the note vs the muscles in your throat which would produce strain so a lot of notes listed here as “free” or “grounded” can be free because they are strainless and can be grounded because of the space used to allow the note to escape but are not supported because proper air is not being used from the diaphragm to bring the notes up so it poses my question again why are “grounded, ringing and free” even a thing? When talking about technique most people know notes higher and lower all need more space and support not grounding lol and we all know that a properly placed note can produce a ringing sound but many can produce a ringing sound just alone by the type of voice that they have but that does not mean there placement is on to produce pure resonance just as some vocalist can support their notes but not have any resonance.

    Ariana Grande Vocal Analysis (2024) Voice type: Light-Lyric Soprano Vocal range: C3-B5-E7 (4 octaves and 2 notes) Range with the most consistent quality, comfort, and technique: F#3/G3-D5-A5 At best: F3-F5-C6 Lower register: (7/10) Low notes are bright and clear and have a good projection up to G3 consistently and F3 at best. Quite surprising for someone with a high tessitura considering her high sitting voice. However, she loses consistency, projection, and becomes airy and weak F3 and below. Mid-belts and mix: (7.5/10) Mid belts are surprisingly strong for someone who frequently utilizes a heady mix in her belts. Her approach in her mid-belts during her later years (2019 onwards) is more balanced compared to her honeymoon era (2014-early 2016) where her approach is more heady and dangerous woman era (late 2016-2017) where her approach is chestier. She has good control over her mid-belts and it is more balanced, consistent, accessible, and more tensionless than people assume resulting in an open, free, well-projected, and controlled sound consistently from G#4 to D5 especially from Bb4 to C5 at her best. She definitely improved this part of her voice over the years. Upper-belts/mix: (7/10) As a soprano like her, her ease and control in this area are good. She may not be the very best and the pinnacle of upper-belting out there, as some of her diehard fans tend to believe, but her consistency and stamina in this area is no joke. Although not consistently, she produces the best and balanced quality from Eb5-F5. As she goes higher beyond F5, she tends to sound thinner but still often avoids straining and too much tension up to G#5 (her signature upper-belting/mix note). However, she loses consistency when she reaches A5 and above which can sometimes be prone to tension, although this doesn't happen much as she was still able to possess a decent quality of mix up to Bb5 especially in her be my baby and breathin performances most of the time. This ease and consistency in her upper-belting range is due to her heady approach with her mix and mixed-belts. Nowadays, she utilizes a more balanced approach (balanced head and chest mix) to her upper-belts/mix especially in her thank u, next and yours truly era. This balanced approach is evidently showcased especially in her sweetener tour and 2023 yours truly 10 year anniversary live performance where she produced a decent but balanced mix. Although she has improved this part of her voice over the years, it has always been consistent in quality and technique with minor flaws and inconsistencies. Upper-register (head voice and falsetto): (7.5/10) Contrary to popular belief, Ariana utilizes her head voice just as much as she utilizes her falsetto. Her falsetto is probably one of the best that pop music has to offer. It is polished, smooth, controlled, and easily accessible. On the other hand, her head voice is also good and is consistently well-coordinated and connected up to A5. Performances such as moonlight, thinkin bout you, be alright, get well soon, and many more including song covers such as no one mourns the wicked and I wanna dance with somebody showcases her control and consistency in her head voice. She may not possess the best and most developed head voice in the music industry, but she can still keep up. Her head voice possesses a bright, strong, and roundness quality consistently up to F#5 and sometimes up to A5. However, her head voice can sometimes sound airy which limits her true potential. Further analysis with her head voice after the wicked (2024) movie will come out with her role as Glinda the good witch. Vocal Agility: (7.5/10) This may be the vocal skill she possess that has consistently improved over the years. She may not be as good as the best riffers out there like Mariah Carey, Tori Kelly, Beyonce, JoJo, and many others, but her vocal agility is definitely above average and is an integral part of her singing style. She can consistently execute vocal riffs and runs that are precise, fast, and complex with good creativity and musicality. The only downside is that there are few performances where she sounds pitchy and unstable and her vocal runs are sometimes repetitive. Lastly, during her early years, she tends to move her jaw a lot and fortunately, she got rid of that habit almost entirely. Whistle register: (9.5/10) One of the best whistle register user in her generation. Able to control her whistle with ease and is also able to create vocal runs and vocal phrases with it. Vocal Dynamics: (6.5/10) She has showcased vocal dynamics from time to time where she sang from pianissimo up to fortissimo. This is greatly showcased in her 2023 yours truly 10 year anniversary live performance. However, there are very rare cases of her showcasing crescendo and decresendo. Vibrato: (10/10) Her vibrato is one of the most controlled and well-developed that pop music has to offer. It can range from soft/subtle to aggressive/intense and can even shift to it smoothly. This great vibrato is also evident throughout all her register especially in her belts and upper-register. Vocal transition: (9/10) Able to easily and smoothly transition between registers from chest to head to whistle and with great control. Pitch: (8/10) Her wide vocal range allows her to hit high notes and low notes with good pitch accuracy. She rarely gets off-key and goes sharp/flat. Vocal stamina: (9/10) She is able to consistently perform in long periods and still able to maintain a decent to good technique and quality while doing a bunch of adlibs. The disadvantages she has with her stamina are the very few vocal performances where her voice got exhausted performing long periods and minor inconsistencies with some of her live vocal performances. Note: this analysis is based on an educated opinion and knowledge about vocals and music. Hence, this analysis is based on what I hear from the vocalist's live performances throughout the years. So feel free to politely disagree. Overall: 8.04/10 Overall comment: She is not as bad as critics say she is and also not as great as diehard fans made her out to be. Her development is distributed fairly evenly throughout range with her mid-belts and upper-register being currently the most developed register. Her major weakness may be that she tends to sing beyond her range with the most consistent quality, comfort, and technique. Fortunately, notes beyond her consistent range are rarely strained, tensed, or weak. Lastly, her biggest asset may be her whistle register, musicality/creativity, vocal stamina, vocal transition, and vibrato. At the end of the day, Ariana Grande is rather a stylistic vocalist with an adequate vocal technique and skill to back up her singing style. She tends to change her singing style depending on the era that she's in.

    @Nessaj Melba Moore is a bigger and fuller soprano. She's a Full-Lyric and has a FULL timbre. She's going to sound bigger than her naturally. There's nothing wrong with having a small voice. Ariana can still project her voice well. Her voice actually blossoms the higher she goes because she has a HIGH tessitura. She's not going to have as much density in the G#4-C#5 area because she's a light-lyric soprano. Her voice actually picks up in volume very high.

    lol im actually a really big fan of ariana’s music and voice, but the main reason why she is regarded as a good vocalist is because of her tone, ease, agility, and pitch precession which are great things to process as vocalist but she’s not the best when it comes to having a healthy technique and engaging with her diaphragm consistently while singing in all or even one register. she also does not resonate a lot. however, she’s definitely making improvements! it would still be very crazy to say ariana is one of the best vocalist in the world or even of this generation when we have actually vocal technicians like jojo, tori kelly, halle bailey, or even tinahse and fuck it even miley could give her a run for her money when we talking about technique. she’s definitely my favorite out of all of them though.
