Lennon's version was, in my opinion, more of the ideal world, a world where people don't need to be afraid of what they are and where there is unity and love among all of us. Ari's version spoke something personal and deep within her. Of her wish to have a normal relationship without the constant influence and intervention of media. She is literally imagining what kind of life it would be--the life that she wants with her lover--if everything was just chill and there was no pressure. Two different songs with two different meanings. Remember that.

I always come back to this live performance, because even though I love the studio version and I'm not a big fan of the arrangement here (no shade to the Roots though), I love what Ariana does while the song goes out. The original just has her ambiently speak the final "imagine" parts, while here she belts it out with the peppy horn and sax as a background, like it's building up to something, but the last "imagine" almost like the song is cut, like a desperate plea. It's so abrupt, and sad, and amazing.

At least I'm not alone in noticing that. She won't look at the crowd and only shows the left side of her face at the end of the show. She seemed super uncomfortable. Her voice is still incredible though, and that whistle note 😲

To think that she really was just coming off the heels of being attacked on social media and dealing with what was going on with Pete and still being able to perform and absolutely crush it. Man I just want to give her a hug she's been through so much this year but I see her as an example to keep fighting. She's just one person who is still growing and learning. I was never an Ariana fan before, although I always thought she had a pretty voice. I rarely watch the jimmy Fallon show but just so happened to be the night this originally aired and when he annonced she was about to perform I was about to change the channel and then she started singing and I was glued to the tv! I had tears in my eyes by the end of it. What a beautiful voice and those whistle notes were amazing. I’ve been a fan ever since. So sad all she’s been through.

No one is even talking about The Roots?! They synced so well with her voice! They should collaborate and make a music video together!
