It amazes me that the camera quality from over 1000 years ago was that good, but it got really bad in the mid 1800’s-early 2010’s for some reason.

Ikr, what also confuses me is how one dyed their hair blue at this time but then the appearance of dyed hair just never showed up till the 21st century.

Roland was Norse from Norway. He left the country when Harald Fairhair became King of Norway. Roland then became a duke in Normandie. So he was Norwegian and a Frankish Hero. A hero of Europe you can also say

Speaking of that, I read something interesting: "The Karlamagnús saga, Karlamagnussaga or Karlamagnus-saga ("saga of Charlemagne") was a late-thirteenth-century Norse prose compilation and adaptation, made for Haakon V of Norway, of the Old French chansons de geste of the Matter of France dealing with Charlemagne and his paladins. In some cases, the Karlamagnús saga remains the only source for otherwise-lost Old French epics."

According to the legends, the only dane/norseman fighting in Charlemagne's army was Ogier le Dane (Holgerdansk), not Roland, who was Frank. But this song is the traditional faeroese reinterpretation of the Song of Roland.

It’s accurate to the shields and weapons commonly used in the period, which is why calling it a Viking shield (same with Viking sword) is wildly anachronistic Edit: just to add, skoldr (Viking shields) are still slightly anachronistic for the video’s era as larger shields similar to Roman Scutii would have been more common for dedicated foot soldiers, granted the argument could be make they’d use round shields (possibly skoldr or parmae) as they had ridden there (as stated in the lyrics) and this is an extremely nitpicky thing that could be debated heavily

Waaaait a second... those aren't Karlings, you can't fool me that easily. I know north sea shields and helms when I see them - Carolingian shields were domed, and their helms more resembled morions and kettle helms.😆 Also the Dane Axe didn't exist by the time Roncevaux happened. @@adriannazborowska5683 Hey, at least something like 95% of it fits into the time period if not the region. That's better than most "historical" thing's I've seen by an average of around 40%. Besides, who even has Carolingian Frankish equipment? It's such a brief period of history that almost nobody bothers with it at all - and definately nowhere near as much as Viking Age reenacting.

nice video but a lot of the arrangement seems.... how can I put it.... heavily inspired by the version of Trio Medieval (kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZmVoz9SJl66bic4.html). Also it would be nice if one of the warriors at least had a big signalling horn to blow since this is what the song is about...

I believe it's an older form of Norwegian (though not quite Old Norse). Here's a translation of the lyrics: Seks mine sveinar heime vera - og gjøyme det gulet balde; (Six men stayed behind - to guard their gold;) Dei andre seks på heidningslando - gjøyme dei jarni kalde. (The other six in heathen lands - brandished cold steel.) Ria dei ut or Franklandet - med dyre dros i sadel. (They rode out of Frankish lands - with spoils in their saddles.) Blæs i luren, Olifant - på Ronsarvollen. (Blow your horn, Olifant [Elephant] - at Roncevaux.) Slogest dei ut på Ronsarvallen - i dagne två og trio; (They fought at Roncevaux - for two days if not three;) Då fekk’kje soli skine bjart - for røykjen av mannneblodet (And the Sun coud not shine clear - through the stench of men’s blood.) Ria dei ut or Franklandet - med dyre dros i sadel. (They rode out of Frankish lands - with spoils in their saddles.) Blæs i luren, Olifant - på Ronsarvollen. (Blow your horn, Olifant [Elephant] - at Roncevaux.) Roland sette luren for blodiga mundi - blæs han i med vreide. (Roland placed the horn to his bloodied mouth - and blew with all his might.) Då rivna jord og jarnastein - i trio døger av leide. (The earth shook and mountains resounded - for three days and nights.) Source: I'm a bit of a language nerd. Also, I corrected some of the grammatical issues that can occur in translation, so not all the words will line up. Hope it helps!

@@kathrinat9824 Most of it lines up pretty well - "cold steel" I flipped from "steel cold" to fit the modern English syntax. "I dagne två og trio" more literally translates to "for days two and three" - makes no sense in that format, so I translated a bit less literally into "for two days or three". The rest should be word for word. Hope it helps.
