I really enjoyed this video. This song is just so ingrained in our cultural consciousness, it's easy to bypass the literary quality of the lyrics in favor of a singalong (which, of course, is still awesome). Your analysis gets me thinking about the song like it's a Poe poem -- I'm seeing so many cool similarities. Thanks for sharing! Can't wait to see more of these!

The story is about loneliness, Eleanor is a spinster who lives a lonely life, alone hoping to find a someone who will love her and be her life companion and on the other side has chosen not to marry, for Fr.

"Wearing a face that she keeps in a jar by the door" always struck me as a reference to make up. She puts on make up to be attractive -- but who is it for? (Father McKenzie?) As to words of a sermon that no one will hear, that's very reminiscent of Simon & Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence" -- which had come out a year before "Eleanor Rigby" -- as well as S&G's "The Boxer" ("a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest"). It was an era of my generation when words of wisdom seemed to be falling on deaf ears. So maybe Father McKenzie did have valuable things to say -- but no one was listening, except for maybe Eleanor was listening in a dreamy way of making a "holy" connection to her impoverished spiritual life. @@azloii9781 Paul wrote part of the melody, George wrote the chorus, someone else wrote the bridge. Paul also did not write the lyrics for this song. This was done mainly by Lennon. But in what source did you find this?

I see however my view is a bit diferent. Rigby is a happy woman, it shows her cleaning after a wedding at the church, the one singing the song is thinking that she might to this to dream of her having a husband one day. Then in the verse "Who is it for" refers to her happy face, the singer cant understand why she is so happy after not having someone to love her. About the paster we know that he writes, no one will read what he writes but he still does it, wich shows how insignificant we are compared to the whole history, just grains of sand, however the atitude of the pastor shows him not caring that even if no one will remember him, he still enjoys the little things that he does. The song is an anthemn for us all, because no mater how you look at it, we are allways lonely, just grains of salt, maybe existential questions come from these song, but those are contrasted by the atitude of the people presented, they dont care they are lonely, it shows how much you can enjoy life lonely or not.

Hunter Davies, chosen by Paul to write a biography of the Beatles, began by writing an article about the lyrics of Eleanor Rigby. He claimed that this text was written solely by Paul. Although it is not.

Father Mackenzie and Eleanor Rigby could've had each other. (Yes I know Father Mackenzie is a Pastor. But I always imagined if things worked out they could've atleast keep each other company. Which is what makes the song even sadder for me.)

I think the artist sung the song as a witness with empathy and sorrow.

Ari here. Her face was kept in a jar by the door- that's a figurative way of saying covered in makeup, looking clean, etc.

Ari here. No one can hear would mean they would physically not be able to hear the sermon. No one will hear implies, no one will because either the sermon was never finished, or the congregation won't hear it- likely cause they refuse. No one can hear could imply that they try to listen but don't understand. Good question

Alternatives to your conclusions. The song was written 50+ years ago by a 24 year old man. A half a century ago, the average person had no idea of the many causes of feelings of lonliness and isolation. Many peopie still don't realiize there is a long list of causes, including depression, loss of loved ones and mental or physical trauma. Where you see the narrator as arrogant, I see him as someone who simply doesn't understand that you can't solve the problem by finding the lonely person some place to belong, and that lonely people come from everywhere. I don't see any reason to assume that the narrator is arrogant, but there is one good reason to think that he is truly moved by the plight of the lonely. The musical sigh: "Ah, look at all the lonely people." An arrogant uncaring person wouldn't express such woe and regret. Father McKenzie's attitude and behaviour could just be another sign of the continuing erosion of organized religion. Why should the Father care about a sermon nobody will hear?

It was a very good analysis but I’m sure the Beatles had no meaning behind it. I mean Paul got the names off of signs in his town.

He worked with actress named Elenor. He got the last name Rigby from a shop he lived near in Bristol. The priest name came from a phonebook, it originally was Father McCarthy.

fantastic analysis but it seems a bit unnecessary. At least in my opinion because the meaning of the song is kinda right there in the lyrics. Ah look at all the lonely people is someone looking at other people thinking something should be done with them. Again this is just my opinion and I still very much enjoyed the video.
