Argentinians pay European prices but earn an Argentinian salary 😳

When being in Argentina I quickly realised: It doesn't seem as cheap as everybody says. Buying food in supermarkets in Buenos Aires didn't feel cheap for me as a European. It felt rather normal. And yet I couldn't help but wonder whether this was only a sensation or not.
When I came back to Barcelona in Spain, I decided to compare some prices in the supermarkets of Buenos Aires in Argentina and the supermarkets here in Barcelona Spain.
Check out the video to see wether my feeling about the prices in the supermarket was right or whether Argentina really is not as cheap as everybody said it would be.

    I agree with you Alina as I stay here now for 3 months. … Buenos Aires is more expensive given a bigger city but you have respectively shared the struggle for Argentina and brought to light the challenges the country is facing.

    I felt like that was important to share. Lots of people always say how cheap it is but „cheap“ always depends on your origin. I think nowadays only North Americans can still say that it’s „cheap“. But in any case no one should ever forget the huge crises that it is for Argentinians.

    That’s what I was expecting as well and I think Argentina probably was way “cheaper” for Europeans some months ago. But that has changed in December more or less. Now it’s not at all a “money-saving” destination for Europeans

    Hi, thanks a lot for your comment. I’m very happy with your feedback and that you’ve got the message. I tried to include both perspectives. I understand why for example US-Americans would say it’s cheap since it is cheaper than their country. But in my opinion saying this the way they do is so rude and respectless for native people. You always have to be informed about the country you make videos about. If you go to a country like Argentina that is in crises and where many people are currently struggling, it simply is an insult and absolutely not okay to pretend that it’s a “cheap paradise”. Therefore, thank you for watching and for your comment. I hope more people understood the importance of being respectful and also of being aware of the current situation from a local point of view :)

    Seems like where BA bounos ares people get by is that rents are cheaper than European? I see some in Argentina are paying monthly rent of $150 to $250…and maybe they have the kids stay longer in the home and the kids/young adults in 20’s and 30’s or 40’s help pay for the rent whether that rent is 150$ or 1,500$ per month….that’s how a lot of the families from Mexico make a $3,000-3,500 month payment for a home ( medium or lower rent for a home) or for a medium priced 2 bedroom Apartment….there is a growing level of frustration with the California government because families that have been here for a long time do not get free health care because they cannot afford it, but if you are a non-citizen from another country and you have come across the border illegally, you get free healthcare. AND there are housing programs that allow non-citizens ( some whom are here illegally) to still apply for subsidized loans for a home purchase, …one of my good friends ( a from Mexico only here for a few years got a 650,000 mortgage approval and did not have to pay any money down, while families that have been here legally for many years cannot qualify for any subsidized home loan program like these and never can by a home!!! and in some cities, like San Francisco, those who are here illegally can actually VOTE on local San Francisco issues….i recommend you research this yourself…don’t believe me just because I am posting this here…but I recommend you do it quickly before this post of mine gets removed as “offensive “ …KZread ( generally Liberal news perspectives because it’s based in California, can be pressured by the liberal Californian…even one liberal reader can request that this information of mine gets removed because it does not make them “feel good.” My family has been in California for over 100 years, and we find it so sad that we are being marginalized like this…we make average money but cannot afford a home, whereas those who make less money are allowed to afford a home because they qualify for a home purchase based on Low-Income housing purchase programs… !!!

With salaries 2-3 times higher than in Argentina(we are still poor) we have cheaper prices of absolutely everything. I mean most expensive and biggest building complex in Belgrade,Serbia cost 4000 euros per sqm. So even housing(most important thing) is cheaper...and in general housing is probably cheaper than enywhere on the planet(ok in africa is cheaper but their salaries are way way lower).

Could Europeans live if they earned a salary 10 times lower than what they currently earn, as would they do? This happens in Argentina since the new president Milei caused enormous inflation while the dollar has been trampled, it does not rise, there is inflation in dollars in Argentina, that is bad for everyone

    1) Argentina became much more expensive in terms of dollars last December ! 2) You did not compared beef, fish, vegetables or wine 3) you are comparing the cheapest spanish supermarket. 4) Property in Spanish big cities is far more expensive than here 5) You mentioned Europe, while you well know that Spain is much more affordable than Germany, France or Britain. At the end, it is an unfair comparison.... 👎

  • @aventuralina

    @aventuralina

    First of all: you are completely wrong about Spain being more affordable than Germany. In fact it is more expensive! The supermarkets, water, accommodation. Everything here is more expensive than in Germany. Germany is actually one of europes cheapest countries when it comes to food and supermarkets. The second thing is that Mercadona is not the cheapest supermarket. There is for example Aldi or Lidl (I know, they are German supermarkets originally, but yes, they do exist here in Spain as well). These are way cheaper than Mercadona. And yes, of course the properties here are more expensive than in Argentina. But the point of the video is that in Argentina it is hard to buy basic necessary stuff such as food with the low salary that exists there. Don’t even get me started on how to pay bills, housing + food… I think that point was very clear.

    @@aventuralina Alina I liked and watch your videos of Argentina since the beginning. After your nice trip (since yourself) to our country, once in Spain you said literally "after Argentina now I m in beautiful Barcelona"... At least sound unkind... Being half luxembourger, and knowing very well Europe, I believe You are comparing pears with peaches... You mentioned you are living in Hamburg, though probably you are comparing spain to Hamburg, but if you compare it with München or Nürnberg, even Barcelona which is the most expensive city in Spain, will result cheaper. Aldi is a german brand, while you visited Mercadona, which is one of the cheaper spanish supermarket You mentioned same items, but did not do the same with other ones which are extremely consumed in Argentina, like meat, vegetables and fruits, eggs, rice, etc.... Additionally I told that after a brutal devaluation, indeed Argentina became much less affordable in dollars since January 2024. Last but not least, why do you tend to think here must be cheaper., when lots of things, particualry those pointed to international tourism, have international prices.. ? For instance you defined your own experience at Perito Moreno, as one of the best you have ever had. Why that must be cheaper than a glacier in let´s say Norway... ? If you visit For ex Rio de Janeiro, you will find crazy expensive prices for special experiences. Alles gute !
