*******************
An icon of 20th and 21st century music, the voice of the civil rights movement, and the undisputed Queen of Soul-there is only one Aretha Franklin. In her incredible six-decade career, Aretha evolved from teenage gospel star to reigning pop and R&B diva, recording classics like “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “Chain Of Fools”, “Think” (lyrics by Aretha Franklin), definitive versions of the songs “Respect” and “I Say a Little Prayer”, and global hits like “Freeway Of Love,” “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)”, and “A Rose Is Still A Rose.”
Altogether, 112 of her singles reached the charts, with 20 No. 1 R&B singles, the most ever by a female artist. She won 18 Grammy Awards (including the first eight trophies for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance) and, out of recognition for her for indelible contribution to American music and culture, received both the Presidential Medal of Freedom and a Pulitzer Prize.

That is an amazing list of musicians who played on this classic. On a side note, I had the honor of meeting Arif Mardin when he produced a song that I co-wrote for Melissa Manchester called "Your Place Or Mine." He was one of the most humble creative amazing producer arrangers in the music industry. I remember hanging out with Arif and my friend Mark Stevens Chaka Khan's brother in Arif's hotel room while he was trying to figure out the chords and rhythms to use to modulate his arrangement of Chaka 's "Night In Tunisia" so he could sample Charlie Parker's famous sax riff and have Herbie Hancock double it on synth. I'll never forget he was using a keyboard and a Dr. Rhythm drum machine to do it. I know all you musicians out there will appreciate the Dr. Rhythm reference. He mapped out the entire arrangement with a keyboard and Dr. Rhythm. Amazing! I also had the opportunity to be in the studio and watch Arif record the rhythm section session for Chaka Khan's "We Can Work It Out" with Greg Phillinganes, Michael Sembello and Raymond Pounds which is my all time favorite studio session I was in. Arif did a lot of amazing string and horn arrangements my favorite being "Where Is The Love" by Donny & Roberta. He also produced Aretha in the 80's along with many other legendary music artists. Of all the high profile music artists, songwriters and producers I had the honor to meet and work with Arif was my favorite. He was the nicest and classiest music industry person I met in the 80's. His arrangement of "Until You Come Back To Me" is a classic especially the flute parts by Joe Farrell. Legendary!!! 😊🎹🎵🔥

It was in the summer of 1973 I met and fell in love with Ms. Sabrina Cooper in Dallas. We were both in our teens, I was 16. As the months passed by I began catching the greyhound bus to see her every weekend. It was still in an era when two teenagers could date and wait, hold hands and not do anything sexually together. That was never on our minds we were so attracted to each other and so respectful towards one another. In early 1974 this song came out and to this day nearly 50 years later it's still as magical as the day we first met back in 1973! If I live to be 100 years old this song will still have a special place in my heart. Thank you so much for bringing back such wonderful memories and a few tears to my eyes!

I hope beloved mom and dad are hearing this tune on heaven. My beloved native Chicagoan mom blessed me at a very young age by playing all the great soul and Rhythm and Blues tunes she learned from my jazz musician grandfather and others, and I soaked them all in like a sponge. She especially loved this tune and “Respect” from the great Aretha Franklin. I am still listening in 2024 and my appreciation for my folks and the artists whom they generously introduced me to continues to grow. Miss you mom and dad and all your predecessors. ❤❤🎶🎶

Yeah I’m pretty sure I’ve heard this in the background throughout my life but I just had a chance to pay attention to it just the other day and she’s gliding on this one.

I think the song showcases her voice better than any other. Stevie Wonder wrote her a good song here, and he DID write it just for her and called her to come over and hear and then sing it.

Talent knows talent. 2 music immortals Stevie Wonder writes Aretha Franklin sings, total collaboration with musical giants Stevie and Aretha, simply blows my mind. God is absolutely good because God gave the talent to both to share not only hurt and heartaches but benevolence and brotherhood, joy and jubilance. Stevie and Aretha. It truly does not get any better than those two.

I was a 14 yr old boy when this began to play on the radio , it moved me then and still stirs my blood. One of those songs that just has something and of course Aretha feels the music . We connect with the beautiful composition and her expression . That lives forever.

Somehow or another, I missed this song when it came out and didn't hear it until many years later. In 1974, I was almost 22 and was very much a bar fly and up on all the latest hits. It seems the best was saved for last!!
