Aretha deservedly earned the title of QUEEN, then, now, and forever. This song brings a certain person to mind for me....it's long over, but damn if I don't think about him when I hear this. 💔

Can't believe it's been already like a year an a half since we lost this greatness. I fell in love with this song listening to Percy Sledge sing it, when i was about 20 years old. I was in love with this beautiful girl. Her aunt didn't want us to be together, so i used to go to her house like 5:30 a.m. some mornings to pick her up and take her to school. I used to park my car around the corner (at the dark end of the street) and she would walk out to meet me. I remember watching her walking coming in the headlights and thinking how absolutely beautiful she was. she made my heart so full. Eventually, her aunt got her way and sent her back to the Virgin Islands. Till this day we still hold a special place in each other's hearts. For me, I will always have our "Dark End of the Street" in the dark end of my heart, away from all other's eyes, but always there fore mine

The hairs on my neck shoot right through my shirt every time I hear her do this. NOBODY can nail a song like Aretha when she's on form. R & B no 1 by a mile. Saw her on a Soul Divas concert. Big stars like Joss Stone did their bit, prancing and strutting. Aretha came in later, swung her arm a bit, belted it out and just soared way beyond them all. The undisputable Queen of Soul.

It is about of adultery, but it has a forewarning of the cost. Not a supporter of any adultery but this song does not convey a happy ever after for the act of adultery it foretells the hurt and destruction that will follow. It a story of our weaknesses and failures that sometimes happens in our relationship.

Aretha is the undisputed lady of songs. She can take any song and do it much better than the original. To compare her version to James Carr's is unfair because this is the one song that she didn't outdo but she did it equally well. As usual, she injected more passion whereas James evoked more pain in his trademark style.

Love this version and CLarence's and Lee Moses' (which follows Clarence's very closely), but the original version by James Carr is still the best, imho. Love Aretha on most anything she puts her talent to, and she really nails this. Dan Penn, one of the song's writers, was asked which his favourite version was and he cited James Carr, saying 'As if there were any other version'.... James Carr also totally nails the Bee Gees' 'To Love Somebody' - these are easy to hear on YT.

it might seem annoying now but i think you need to consider that (next to) no one had sung like that before her in popular music and her 'warbles' where coming from a real place rather than the wails we hear in pop-ballad type music today. she does tend to oversing though, i just think people were looking for that raw sound and she gave it to them.

You say no one can out do any original song by an artist. That's a flat out lie because Whitney Houston took Dolly Parton's song "I Will Always Love You" to a whole nother level and Dolly herself said so. It never got the attention it did until Whintey did it. It is now known all over the earth because of Whitney Houston. Aretha took songs from other artist all the time....like "RESPECT" and did it better then the original. So i think you need to rethink your comment.

One thing that I find annoying is Franklin's sometimes gymnastics approach, where there are more than suitable warbles, quavers, and so on. Speaking of the original version, it may not be James Carr's. Check out the composer's rendition: Dann Penn; it's up here on YT. Simple, direct, pure...stunning (IMNSHO).

Soul Sir, you are not making any case for the point you made. You are just saying that the original song is the best, because it is the original. That is called circular logic, it makes no sense. Two songs that you should research if you are going to make that point: Long Black Veil, and Knockin on Heavens Door. Find the originals, then make rasch comments.
