Ares and the Rage of Achilles

Episode 5 in the series about the Greek Pantheon. This time we're introducing Ares, God of the violent and untamed aspect of war. We'll talk about Homer's Iliad and the role of the Ares-like rage in the story.
--------------------------------------------------
With Ciceroni we seek to be a guide to European culture and history. We’ll be talking about little known subjects as well as more ubiquitous ones. We strive to present the subjects in their complex context by combining everything from art to economics, and from politics to sociology.

    Diomedes is the most underrated and often overlooked Greek hero. If anyone in Achilles' generation of warriors can match him in prowess, strength and bravery, it's Diomedes. Indeed, I think he was not included in the movie Troy because Achilles wouldn't be able to outshine him like he does the rest.

    Someone will say: And are you not ashamed, Socrates, of a course of life which is likely to bring you to an untimely end? To him I may fairly answer: There you are mistaken: a man who is good for anything ought not to calculate the chance of living or dying; he ought only to consider whether in doing anything he is doing right or wrong - acting the part of a good man or of a bad. Whereas, according to your view, the heroes who fell at Troy were not good for much, and the son of Thetis above all, who altogether despised danger in comparison with disgrace; and when his goddess mother said to him, in his eagerness to slay Hector, that if he avenged his companion Patroclus, and slew Hector, he would die himself - "Fate," as she said, "waits upon you next after Hector"; he, hearing this, utterly despised danger and death, and instead of fearing them, feared rather to live in dishonor, and not to avenge his friend. "Let me die next," he replies, "and be avenged of my enemy, rather than abide here by the beaked ships, a scorn and a burden of the earth." Had Achilles any thought of death and danger? For wherever a man's place is, whether the place which he has chosen or that in which he has been placed by a commander, there he ought to remain in the hour of danger; he should not think of death or of anything, but of disgrace. And this, O men of Athens, is a true saying.

    I guess. I mean, he did get a spear shaft through the abdomen because of the intervention of Athena so he decided to go to Olympus to complain to Zeus about how it’s unfair Athena could do that to him and how wrong it is that the gods are spilling each other’s blood on behalf of mortals. I don’t think even the god of war could fight with a whole ass spear in his gut. You also forgot that his roar upon being wounded sounded like the battle roars of thousands of men and that both armies shook in fear hearing it. Ares whined to Zeus because Athena aided a mortal in wounding two gods, basically because she is a sore loser and couldn’t accept her loss to Aphrodite in a beauty contest. Ares didn’t gaf about mortal struggles or the beauty contest, that’s why he didn’t follow his word to help the Achaeans. He just enjoyed the tumult and slaughter of war, as Zeus said in his rebuke of him.

    Achilles isn't obsessed with war... He questions the whole warrior thing they do and he only fights to satisfy himself in many ways. This analysis completely ignores greek thought at the time period. Warriors expected to fight and to die in battle was immortality... That's it. No Greek writer ever would compare a character fictional or not to a god...

  • @Ciceroni1

    @Ciceroni1

    3 жыл бұрын

    We aren’t Greek writers so we can make that comparison :) I believe what you are saying is not unlike what we are saying btw. That he is obsessed with war does not mean he loves it. It is merely super present in his life and person. As a warrior he knows he can have eternal glory through battle but he has to pay the dearest price. Of course a belief in even a literal sense of immortality does not take away the dread of loss of life. Christians or Muslims believe they will go to a next world, a better one than this one. Yet there are few people who would happily step out of their current life. War, famine and disease scares people who are convinced of heaven too.

    Achilles is the greatest simply because he is undefeated... The greeks don't care about his problems... In fact, several of the comrades try to get him back to fight only to win against troy... Completely disregarded achilles feelings towards getting his stuff taken away... Also there is absolutely 0 reference to any homosexuality in the book... In fact patroclus and achilles both have war brides... Actually that's how the iliad starts... It's about achilles losing his war bride

  • @Ciceroni1

    @Ciceroni1

    3 жыл бұрын

    It is indeed. The start of the dispute. Which I think we mention in our video, do we not? The fact that they also had brides does not exclude anything though. The sort of choice that is expected in modern times in which having sexual relations with men or women ‘marks’ you as either gay or straight is not necessary, it is a construct of our times. It did not exist in this way in ancient times. You could imagine a society making a division between people who drink tea or coffee. In which you identify them by that choice. We do not do this in real life and are happy to accept that people might drink coffee in the morning and tea at night. The Greeks had an attitude more similar to the coffee/tea than gay/straight of modern Western standards.

    And glory, take early 20th century philosophers, especially the work of Ernst Junger. He viewed war as a transcendent experience, one unlike anything else you could experience during your life. Bombs, sounds, colors, glory, sacrifice, terror, etc. All around you, and for a curious mind such as his, he viewed it from almost an outside perspective while partaking in the trench warfare of WW1. There's an old quote about a man missing out on a fundamental part of life if he had never gone to war, or never gone out to sea. A modern humanist take looks at war as a negative, which modern anonymous style war where technology has taken center stage, it is a negative. But instead view it from an earlier time, it was extremely personal and being a great fighter was something to take pride in as it said something about you as an individual. Throughout history no one has glorified the coward archetype; why do you think that is?

    @@Ciceroni1 you would think so but that was not the case. It seems that Athena was the patron deity as protector of the city, as Spartan women were the last line of defense for the city if there were no men left. Spartans in the early days sacrificed a few prisoners of war to appease Ares, but stop doing so soon after as he was seen as a coward. His actions during the Trojan war were not looked upon as honorable. After being injured by Ajax he fled to Zeus and asked that the act be reversed so that he looked like the victor. Zeus thought this was despicable and wanted him removed from the Pantheon altogether. Only Aphrodite loved Ares. He was a serial rapist and Spartan women had complete sexual freedom to be virgins for life if they wanted. Spartans worshiped Artemis Otrera which was more about coming of age. It is interesting that Otrera was the first queen of the Amazons who was supposed to be a daughter of Ares and was mythologically the founder of the Temple of Artemis. Other than that they dedicated their worship mostly to Apollo during the three festivals of the year.

The Troyan hero that died from the hand of Achilles.they had a son by the name Mollosos.eventually he was overthrown from a rival faction and fled to Epirus,another Greek region an$ his descendants ruled the region.intresting enough one of them was Olumpias,the mothe4 of Alexander the Great.also Pyrrhus a king who fought the Romans in Italy.now the myth that the hero was invulnerable is a later one.in Iliad the hero gets slightly wounded in the course o& th3 battle.and Homer n3ver m3ntioned such a thing.most likely his Panoplia had to do something with that.the same that they were gay.later myths without base.and Patroclus was much older than him.and also a brave and capable warrior.he fights Hector ,kills his charioteer,Hectors brother.fights over his corpse,forces Hector to retreat to avoid to be killed,pushes the Trojans to the walls ,scales the walls but gets thrown down.he is dizzy from the fall and alone,then a Troyan hits him from the back with a spear.the Troyan runs away with fear when Patroclus turned to face him,the wound wasn’t mortal.Patroclus withdraws from the battle alone,Hector saw the aftermath,runs and kills the wounded Patroclus with his spear.he avoided close quarter battle because the wounded lion could still deal death.you won’t see anything like that in the movie ,because they have an axe to grind,called propaganda and misinformation.

    THANK you for not washing Achilles and Patroclus into heteronormative characters. I am so tired of people believing they are cousins, or friends, or brothers in arms. There are many translations of the Iliad where the text is quite suggestive, such as Achilles referring to Patroclus as his hearts companion, his most beloved, etc. Achilles withdrew from war when Briseis was taken by Agamemnon, and only returned when Patroclus, his lover, was killed in battle. He refused to bury Patroclus, refused to eat or drink for days, and slept with Patroclus’s body in his tent before finally holding a proper funeral after Hector’s death. Patroclus was quite literally Achilles’ weakness, the “Achilles heel”. There are also many parts in the Iliad that talk about Achilles and Patroclus in camp together, patroclus listening as Achilles plays the lyre and sings for him. Though Achilles unleashed his rage upon Troy, it was born from grief and love, not hatred.

    @wanka wanka whether they are gay or not is not all that important if you ask me. Whether it was sexual or not doesn’t change the fact that Achilles was willing to defy fate for Patroclus. He wanted their ashes to be mixed and Achilles was willing to die for him. There are many different types of love it was love whether sexual or not. I’m we all put sexual love on a pedestal acting like nothing is more important than that. But nevertheless he held Patroclus is the highest of regards. So Patroclus was a lot but he wasn’t a companion. My impression of the story is that Patroclus was ultimately what made him human. His heel being his fatal weakness was not in the original story it came later. The thing that sealed Achilles Fate was the death of Patroclus not the arrow. It almost seems as if he stopped caring for life after that. Some joined Patroclus in death and I do not think he regrets it. But it’s a fictional story. The Greek stories are made to be interpreted so it is not as if there is only one truth. I don’t care about their sexuality what I care about is what their bond meant for them and their story. But the old greece was gay af but you can believe whatever the hell you want.

    ACHILLES IS NOT GREEK!!!!!CHECK THIS: Achilles is the son of Peleus and the nymph Tethis. The Peleos was the king of the Mirmidons who, during the Trojan War, lived in Thessaly. Mirmidons had emigrated to Thessaly on the island of Aegina, following a plague epidemic, during the time of Leuus' father, Aeaeus. According to numerous ancient sources, the name of the mirmidons comes from gr. myrmix "ant" word of Indo-European origin, namely from PIE *momro-, *momri- "ant" (Walde-Hoffmann, 1, 531) with Sanskrit cognats and Indo-Aryan, Latin, Armenian, Celtic, Slavic and Germanic languages. Virtually in almost all Indo-European languages. Although the word also existed in ancient Greek, it is also found in Latin (formica) and Romanian (ant), with the passage of m initially to f, through the process of dissimilarity of the two m. And in Greek there are dialectal forms that exhibit the same process of dissimilarity: byrmax, bormax "id", forms probably occurring under the influence of the Pelasge language. Therefore, a similar form must have existed in the pelasga, the ancient Indo-European language from which traco-daca and ilira come. Some researchers have tried to find a Greek etymology to the Achilles anthroponym, namely from the achos "anger, pain" and laos "people, nation", hence "troubled people" or more precisely, being a person's name "the one whose people are troubled", a rather absurd hypothesis, which the researchers have renounced. More recently, the authors of Wiktionary suggest another more plausible etymology, based on Indo-European lexical elements: PIE *ek'-pod- "sharp foot" > proto-traco-ilir. ak'podios > *akhpdios > *akhiddios where dd became ll when it was borrowed from the pelasg (or proto-traco-ill) into Greek. This passage is possible, given that both d and l have the same point of articulation, namely the dental alveoli, therefore Akhileus. Robert Beekes (EDG, 183) points out that Greek lexical elements with double consonants, such as ll, ss, etc. are loans from the pre-Greek substrate, from the Pelasg language, in other words. This hypothesis is as correct as possible since we have lat. acupedius "quick foot", which is consistent with the phrase "Achilles, the quick foot", found in Homer. Therefore, Achilles translates as "the quick one of the foot", anthroponymof the pelasg origin. Homer and some of the Greeks of his time probably knew what Achilles meant, that is, the 'quick foot', in the pelasg, but of course most of them didn't know this. Since about half of the Greek lexicon is of Pelasgal origin, as evidenced by Robert Beekes's Electronic Greek Dictionary, it is obvious that there has been a long period of bilingualism in Greece, a Pelasgo-Greek bilingualism, of course, being assimilated many Pelasgi anus by the Greeks..

Would be interested to hear what you think of that :) kzread.info/dash/bejne/fnmrvNeedbXAd7g.html

    There is actual genealogy that Achilles and Patroclus are cousins. It wasn’t made up by Hollywood. Honestly we keep seeing these two through American eyes and don’t consider how other countries view the closeness of men. Plus Achilles’s anger has been used to show a romantic relationship with Patroclus but I’m pretty sure anyone who had a close best friend who was like their brother or sister would react the same

  • @Ciceroni1

    It surely is possible and we will never know for sure. So there are multiple theories, we think the romantic relationship is the most fitting one, but others might think otherwise :)

    That into needs to be scrapped, the Iliad is not comparable to the Bible in influence

  • @Ciceroni1

    @Ciceroni1

    How so? The Iliad formed the Greek identity, on which much of the Western world’s identity is based. Arguably in the Middle Ages, the bible had a winning streak over the Iliad but in Antiquity before and from the Renaissance again, the Greek identity has been ever so important to the West. Everyone from Plato to Spinoza, Augustus to Napoleon and Herodotus to Churchill grew up with the story of the Trojan war. Living in the Roman Empire even Jesus himself may have known the story of Achilles. There are certainly more people who believe the Bible to be true nowadays than those who think the Iliad is accurate but that’s not all that counts :)

    People are getting so mad over others saying that Achilles was gay why? People can interpret it as they want, in my opinion, I do believe they were lovers, and obviously there can be anyone disagreeing with it. Though, it would make the grief and anger far more understandable that way. Y'all are talking about "bUt HOMOSExuaLItY bAd In pAST" Yuh, that's why most people in the LGBTQ+ community are looking for those older clues of just the tiny chance of someone actually being gay in the past so they can justify their existence- You are not trying to bring up facts, you are just homophobic if you're getting mad over that. Shame on you and your entire bloodline.
