Area Within 10 Kilometre Radius Around Konza Declared A 'Special Planning Zone'

Konza Technopolis, Kenya’s first smart city that is set to become a world class technology hub and economic driver is already attracting local and international investors with the investment uptake standing at 40 per cent by Mid 2021. Horizontal infrastructure on phase one of the project covering 410 acres out of the 5,000 acres set aside for the project is taking shape and it is expected to be completed by 2022. As investors come on board, one of the key issues of concern is whether developments around the Konza Technopolis will well managed to avoid sub-standard developments that could scare away investors. During an investor conference held on 21st June 2021 at Konza, the Principal Secretary for ICT Jerome Ochieng assured investors that the national government and the neighbouring counties had swung in action to ensure the neighbourhood is attractive

This is how Western and European cities are built; planned. Africa??? The buffer zone is very important, although land companies are using Konza City as a bait to sell plots “mafuta mafuta.” Controlled Developments the only way to go in Kenya for orderly life and economic growth. Land USE v/s “OWNERSHIP” should be emphasized.

Why didn’t you think about a buffer zone when this project was conceived? Is this a “learning on the job” process? What happens to local land owners who may not have the ability to develop it as deemed? Are you not creating a problem of gentrification? A project of this magnitude should have at the very least investigated all potential impacts before pushing ahead with half baked ideas.

Kenya should have what i call a town and country urban planning. Not only around the Konza Technopolis project but all over Kenya. What if there a well planned environment in the buffer zone and out of that zone it is unplanned? That is why a well planned environment setup must be designated before its too late.

Korea, singapore and the other Asian tigers did not become giants because of smart cities. They became successful because they started with reforming govt from within and that i mean they stamped out corruption , waste, mismanagement and improved on efficiencies in how govt operates and then everything else fell into place. You can not grow an economy to its full potential when half of your budget is going to peoples pockets. 500b stolen by govt officials , waste and mismanagement, this leads to so many lost opportunities whereby wealth is concentrated in a handful of people at the expense of 50m kenyans. This creates huge disparities between the rich and poor in Kenya whereby even today after 60 some years of independence we are still dealing with the same issues of poverty, hunger, luck of affordable, adequate health systems, slums, jobs and the list goes on.

Egypt is also in the process of building a new city, the masterplan was done during mubarak time way before Narc came into power yet its now not yet complete. If the masterplan of nairobi was drawn before independence yet we have not managed to follow it 50+ years later. I have been to konza more than 10 times now and it is getting into shape over the years. During the 1st visit you never make sense of what was going on.

Nope. Cost of doing business in Africa we are nowhere near the highest in Africa. Kenya is no. 4 in Africa when it comes to ease of doing business. Electricity access as a % of the population we are in top 10. Share of internet users in Africa we are no. 1 at 85%, literacy and skilled labour force we are among the best. Transport infrastructure - road, rail, sea and air, we are among the best. In fact when it comes to share of multinationals in Africa we are are up there. We are biggest non mineral economy in Africa and 6th biggest overall. We have a lot to pride in. Yes we SHOULD and MUST improve, but investing in Kenya is no brainer. Be that as it may, the major component in cost of doing biz is tax. It inflates costs. Simply categorize the city as a special economic zone just like we do with companies in EPZs. Cut taxes, give tax holidays and moratoriums for say 25 years and we are in business!
