I'm 29 been doing music since 16/17 but stopped for many years in-between but looking to get serious now. Was abit concerned about age but truly, thanks for giving me the plain truth about the whole situation now, I mean hey I write songs and rap well but I'm gonna just now learn how to play the keyboard and learn music language from scratch for versatility and depth. Thanks brother. I do gospel music btw and I love almost all genres. If you have any significant added advice, please let me know.

I have 36yrs of music experience I am 38 yrs old. One of my first words was probably middle C (my mom is a piano teacher). The guitar I have 26 years. The last five years I have really started pursuing it more then a hobby. I have been making money playing the local scene. Which was the original goal I set a few years back. I am hoping now to set my self apart by becoming better at marketing its slow going but it is getting better. This is one of the reasons I enjoy Adam ivy so much and he is a strait shooter no beating around the bush.

I started learning singing when I was 24 and now 34. I used to dream of signing big labels but I’m content to uploading covers on my KZread 90 percent DIY except video taking on the year 2022 after procrastinating it for 7 years. Age doesn’t really matter as long as we can do our passion while working full time job. Thank you for great videos as always 😊

I’m pushing 40 and just getting to the point of knowing how to really produce artists and to teach my musical skills. I used to have that “too old” mentality. As long as you’re relevant and feel the music you’re putting out, age shouldn’t matter.

It takes 10 years to even achieve a professional standard as a producer. When most people seriously start in the early 20s they only start being 'good enough' to be signed at 30, then it takes years of grinding and releasing on smaller but reputable labels, slowly building up your portfolio of tunes and getting gigs and transition into full time musicianship at 40.

I’m 34 and have been “half ass” doing music for 16 years while working boring jobs or studying music. I always just had in my head that I’d ‘’make it” cause I can make good melodies and “beats” without actually finishing or releasing them. But only this week have I posted two freestyles on KZread. Only now I realise that I’m getting older so I really have to make this happen ASAP and gain a following before I’m too old to be making rap and electro pop bangers. Having goals with specific deadlines is KEY. Even if it’s just to improve music skills or learn some more about marketing. Consistency will see you reach your goals. Don’t waste time chasing labels or a&r people. You have to do it on your own now and then they will come to you. Thank you for your videos Adam!!!

I taught myself piano and guitar when I was 19. All I know is I feel pure happiness when I discover a melody and lyrics. Everything else is profane decadence.

Your content is just so consitently valuable and fire...Thank you so so so much...That last part about being a business owner and not an emotionally driven artist is something that I really needed to hear...I get so caught up in the metaphysical beauty of creating music and just assuming that I should "Make it" just because I feel like that's what i was born to do, but i completely neglect the business aspect of it and wonder why i'm still not where I wanna be...i'm turning 28 soon so i'm knocking on 30s door and this is something i think about a lot. Thanks again for all you create. (Also the little detail of the confetti getting stuck to your face was so good LMFAOOO)

I started doing this chart, and in 10 minutes found I'd expanded it into a whole spreadsheet with other impacts I'm feeling in addition to age, and also breaking it down by the different things I've been trying to do (original music, cover performances, placements, and teaching.) I appreciate the push towards focus and reality.

M8, top video. I've been playing music for most of my life and make songs for the sheer fun of it, and in the back of my mind identified I didn't have that focus and unrelenting drive necessary to make a career out of it years ago. Non-musicians though frequently ask why I don't pursue music and your videos give me a good way to explain it, so cheers. I still get joy from making music, and knowing some people who have made respectable careers in the genres I play makes me more aware that that lifestyle is not for me.

This is what I need to hear as a artist 💥 love this guy keep being honest and yes if you don't believe in yourself no one will that's just the facts of the universe

I am 35 but started back around 2009. I took a long break after moving to Japan, but just started making beats and instrumentals again last year. Its definitely more saturated now compared to 2009, but at the same time theres a ton more resources to use and learn from.

I am 66, and have been involved in the music business in some form my entire life. I am pleasantly surprised how busy I stay at this point in life. I don't push it, or really market myself. Don't make a vast amount of money, but I survive comfortably. And no, there's no wife or inheritance, just trying to make sense of it all.

I have no desire to be signed to a label, but I'm a music producer, not a vocalist. I'm 32, been performing music since 9 years old but in a different music avenue than production. Started music production in 2023 and It brings more fulfillment to me than anything i've done. The biggest regret I have of all regrets in my life is not beginning this music production journey many years ago.

A very useful bit of advice for anyone who feels lost, which lest face it, is everyone at some point! On occasion, I get some of it wrong and some of it right and it can be difficult to find a balance, but when you set achievable goals, you tend to achive them more often than not. I used to put this point across as a Fitness Instructor/PT... People would come to me asking what the quickest way to loose "weight" or "how many crunches will give me a six pack" would be and my favourite "what diet is best" Now I'm not trying to insult the intelligence of these questions, as they're all valid, but the world has given us some false ideas in these areas... 1) You want to loose "fat" not "weight" (it's not that simple) 2) Crunches are no where near the most effecive way to get a six pack (compound exercise will gain muscle and shred fat) 3) There's no "one size fits all diet" for anyone! The point is, everyone's body is different and this is why we have PTs and programme etc... I'd always say "start with one realistic goal, set a realistic deadline and once that's done, learn from what you do wrong and ad another 2 goals... this applies to almost anything in life! I also used to say, "But do what I advise, not what I do" 😅

For some reason I never cared about being signed to a label. I always wanted to DIY it. Perhaps it was foolish for someone who started back in the 90s but at this point I think its fine. I really enjoy having total responsibility over what I create. My success and my failures are mine. I can't imagine wanting it any other way. Best of luck to all of you who are trying to make it out there, no matter the path you choose.

I started writing in my 20's, took a very long break from music, now finally releasing in my late 40's

I have that feeling of making music since i was young, but i don't even know where to start

I have decided to do just this and realised that the only reason I didn't succeed was because I tracked nothing. Now I track every music library I sign with, every music supervisor I contact, every dance label I submit to. So far I've got my first goal of a decent bespoke library. I never took the time to track my goals until now. I also have a decent TikTok. I had to get my ego out of it so I can start to make the money. I have a 2 day old son and he would say "Dad just get money so I can eat". Simple.

my son born at 11:11 on 1st of January ... I was singing songs to him and everyone said why don't u become a singer and that's what im doing now.. life is too short... go do it ,, if it works u be a star , if it doesn't work u have an experience

I like this. I write perform and produce my own stuff but it’ll just be icing if it makes any money. I love my stuff and it gives me the most joy, but I know for a fact the majority of my career will be making content and contributing to other people’s stuff. Nothing wrong with that I’m 31 and been incarcerated for ten years (my life has been weird) and I’m never going to give up, but the dream of playing the world in a band with my best friends (which was the original trajectory and had a decent chance as far as those things go, I’m still friends with those cats) is over, and that’s okay too, gotta be resilient and adaptable as a grown man

lets just say...i just started getting some traction and i am 30 but look 23-25 at most...should this mean i should re consider my goals still or keep going at this route im taking? not getting the results i want yet but i am barely getting my first track released this month through a label in EDM and i guess i came here for validation. sorry if this does not make any sense

I'm 44 and composing/producing professionally (playing and composing since I was a kid and teen) and also working as an audio engineer since I was 21, more or less. I mainly work as a film/tv composer, but I also did and do other things like record promoter and project manager for music and film. Gotta do several stuff to keep inside the loop. I’m 40, but I’ve been playing piano and keyboards since I was in my late teens yet I tried to teach myself as a child overcoming a learning disability. I did develop an ear for music. I attempted at songwriting as a teenager, but I needed to write better, so I didn’t start back up until my mid-30s. I did compose when I took a MIDI class in college and I also played in a contemporary pop college ensemble and played at a local nightclub four times in each four semesters. I have to get myself back out there to perform and to keep writing to make a name for myself, and I also have to finish my education with a degree in Commercial Music to see where I go from there as a musician.

Jay Z was in his late 20's trying to get a label to back his first commercial album ' Reasonable Doubt'. No one wanted him because he was pushing 30 and the music he came with was pretty far from trendy, even a bit unfamiliar in the hiphop/rap sphere at the time. Fast forward and he was the hottest product in the genre throughout his 30's. Even tried to retire after 'The Black Album' and if you know his discography, you'd know people would have missed out on some killer music if he had stopped there. As a side note before people compare themselves though - Jay Z had an unfair advantage; a shit ton of money to fund himself from successfully selling drugs in NYC during the height of the crack epidemic. But still.

Sing to yourself and with friends. Watch KZread videos and learn the fundamentals of music. That should give you a start. My father discouraged me a lot when I was a kid when it came to my music - it held me back for many years. Mom was more of a nurturer and believed in me.

Stop making your age a issue and do what you're passionate about RESPONSIBLY 🤷🏽‍♂️ it's that simple. One thing I can DEFINITELY agree on is trying to get signed in ur 30s is a waste of time anyway 😂😂😂😂😂 Sony Records told me I was too old at 27 so I can only imagine at 37-47 build your fan base, make your money, live your life💯💯💯

The only time I really consider my age is when it comes to stage performance (I do a lot of choreography, often in heels or thigh high boots;). My recurring internal struggle has been figuring out how to succeed and carve out a space as a black LGBT artist when there were few, if any, examples to look to when I was growing up

If your music is good that's all that matters. Perhaps focus on that and then TEACH the choreography to other performers? I live in West Hollywood and there are ppl like Chi Chi Larue who do very well as DJ's and teaching choreography.

@feastorafamine I was replying to your suggestion that I teach choreography for other artists. It's not that I care or am worried about what other local artists are doing. It's just that, other than one LGBTQ bar (which is the first one we've had in almost a decade) there's no consistent place for me to perform (and the crowd at the bar wants Drag Race style lipsyncs, not original music). Among black artists, rap dominates in both sound, look, and how things are promoted. On the rock side, it's mostly bands, acoustic artists or swamp pop. When I've approached them about performing, I usually get met with "Hmm, didn't know we had that (electronic music) here," and that's about it. I definitely appreciate the gigs I do get. But it is frustrating and sometimes lonely being an anomaly in my local scene

Im 48, been into music for 25 years. I'm legit more advanced at Guitar playing and Engineering than I've ever been. (I look 35 though, that doesn't help, wish it did)

Commercial success is no way to define success. Sign a contract and they own your ass! I’m 52 and late to the game but gigging “playing my own songs” 3-7 days a week and getting paid. I’m releasing music that I want to play with lingering leads baby! None of that 3 minutes song BS. Just for the fun of it, but can actually make a living from it if I want to gig non-stop. Getting better with age!

I’m 39.. I started LEARNING guitar and songwriting at 33… I wrote and put out my first EP in Dec 2021.. I did it just for me because I loved the process of songwriting. Then I realized that I want to make an income out of this… so, I realized that I want to get my songs on Tv, movies and commercials.. I have no interest In being a pop star.. I’ve been working on a Christmas song that I will be releasing this year. My first Ep was just for me. My Christmas song I’m approaching more as a business because I really want to push it and make money off of it. So, we’ll see what happens.

I really love Christmas and I really wanted to write a song that would express my feelings that come up during the holidays… but in the past I’ve been art focused.. and other people i know have been more business focused and they’ve had more success than i have. So I wanted to try to implement some of that way of thinking.

I thought music is about what different niches of people want to listen to..

Instead of stopping drinking and smoking to be healthy i stopped cuz i feel old. Moral of the story is that getting old is freaking me out more than not being healthy. Old is a feeling based on a number. You “feeling” old is something you can easily change. 21 isn’t old in any kind of way.

It depends if you to old and you still focusing on music career and waisting years and music career not going anywhere I says it’s time to give it up and get in something else you should focus on getting a trade before getting to old your music career you should do music as a hobbie that’s it not taken seriously

I think you are missing a very crucial point in this video: despite your age you have always the chance to join an already established band someday. Maybe not Metallica. Maybe not Iron Maiden. But a band that can afford a living from their music. 😁

I’m assuming you commented before watching the whole video? The fact is there is slim to no chance of getting signed to a major label with a good deal once you’re over 30. Why does that upset you and how is that harmful? What’s harmful is grown adults not understanding the actual business side of the music industry and thinking they need a label to be successful.

That's a choice. Choices are decisions. Only you can change these self-limiting inner dialogues.

So if youre over 30 u cant be a solo artist? Lol

Who said that? Anyone can be an artist. My point was if you’re over 30 and trying to get a label/record deal, you’re focusing on the wrong thing.

@@adamivy i guess labels nowadays focus more on popularity not age ,they would happily sign a popular thirty something than to sign a twenty nobody
