Are You Still Using Procreate? You Need to Watch This!

As a professional illustrator that has worked with clients like Cartoon Network, Nike, Google, and countless others-I do the majority of my work in Adobe Fresco. Want to know why I prefer it over the seemingly more popular iPad drawing app, Procreate? If so, this is the video for you.
Cliff notes: Adobe Fresco incorporates Vector and Raster workflows, it has AMAZING and easy to use motion features far beyond what you can do in Procreate (and in some ways Procreate Dreams) + the Creative Cloud integration makes my workflow with client projects so simple.
There's a bunch of other stuff too, like multicolor swatches, live brushes, auto-color palettes and perspective grids and MORE.

    I use both Procreate and Fresco. It's a bit of an awkward workflow, but I like the quickness of Procreate for sketches. It's easy to just pull up a canvas and sketch out an idea in Procreate. I'm probably just more used to the layout, but the interface is really easy to use for drawing. I'll then save the file as a pdf and send it to Fresco where I'll use Vector brushes to ink it. When I want to do my best line work though I use Clip Studio Paint. Its brush engine is just superior to any other program I've used. For commercial stuff I always finish it in CSP, and if it needs to be vectorized, I'll do an image trace of my line work.

  • @zendragon6

    @zendragon6

    4 ай бұрын

    @@GodisGood941 not at all. I think they each have their advantages. I like the modifier tool in Fresco. It makes a lot of sense, especially for Vector work. I like CSP's brush engine the best. It feels the most natural to how I draw and ink. But I primarily do graphic style ink work. For painterly work, I haven't really explored the differences between the three of them to make a judgement. But Procreate is by far the easiest "get out of your way and just draw/paint" interface between the three of them. I will say, the layers limitation can be annoying, where CSP handles many more layers without issue. For a very large piece for print, CSP or Fresco are going to be much better due to the lesser limitations and the ability to scale vectors.

    Yep, gotta agree on the smoothing bit. I tried recreating a handwritten logo sketch in Procreate and spent upwards of half an hour trying to get the brush dynamics to give me the same flow that Fresco's vector brush with tapering on both sides has. They seem to have smoothing locked in better whereas Procreate gives almost too much customization which makes it harder to get right.

    @@jsunsherman72 Oof, yeah that's an asshole tactic. All their mobile apps, even on beefy iPads which can go toe to toe with actual desktops, are feature starved and should be titled as such e.g. Photoshop Lite, Lightroom Lite. I too was let down when seeing how much stuff is missing, Photoshop especially is laughably generic.

    So glad I decided to watch this one because just today I decided to go back to Fresco to try color some ink sketches and I wanted it to be a vector. I really miss Adobe Draw don't know why they got rid of that one but I was a procreate user and the first few years I used it I loved it couldn't tear me away from it. Then as time went on I always felt like even with all the features and brushes I was missing something. I've used sketchbook affinity and for the past year art rage. I think Fresco might be what I've been chasing all this time with procreate I just have to spend time getting used to it again and I love using Adobe Capture I'm like why has no one else created this! It's really helpful. Look forward to more Fresco videos.

    When you open fresco vector file in illustrator does the vector illustration show the paths? I was trying to recently convince someone to use fresco because of the vector option but it didn’t have paths/handles (or I couldn’t find the controls) to alter the vector lines in fresco.

  • @chris-piascik

    Yes it does, it’s an outline image, but it’s still made of points and paths that you can adjust in illustrator. Fresco vector art is similar to art you can create in illustrator with the blob brush, meaning its shape based.
