The moderators didn’t do that because it was part of the rules that both campaigns agreed to before the debate. The Biden campaign allowed the Trump campaign to negotiate that in.

Yep, they rigged it openly in trump's favour when they refused to moderate (moderators are supposed to fact check). What we need at the next debate is a pair of the crankiest nuns anyone can find (any denomination, they just have to be mean af), and this time we don't mute the candidates, and we still don't moderate, but we have a team of fact checkers listen to the debate, and when a candidate starts to lie the nun next to that candidate is informed via the ear piece! Oh, did I mention the endless supply of wooden yard sticks? Because we've got some with speed holes too!

Perhaps, you forgot the Obama-Romney debate in 2012 when moderator Candy Crowley fact checked Romney and it was controversial at the the time because it isn't the place for the moderators to do this.

They let 45 talk over Biden rather than silencing 45’s mic when it wasn’t his turn, as they had promised to do. They failed to fact check either of them, even AFTER the debate when they should have spent an hour delineating and enumerating the lies, not just focusing on Biden’s slowness. They are not innocent in this debacle, and they may have cost us our democracy (at least in part.) Biden’s team was over confident, and didn’t take appropriate steps to ensure that the conditions would not handicap Biden. Definitely mistake, or several. But 45 is a lying liar who lies, and his plan is to be a dictator on day 1. I’ll vote for a potato over letting 45 become 47.

She has been saying what we all saw. If she did differently, we would suspect her as a journalist.

So Abby Phillips just effectively said: 1) It's not a journalist's job to sort lies from truth if it would take up too much air time, and, 2) Somehow, the moderators (i.e. journalists) would not be capable of calling out lies and exaggerations in real time without losing control of the debate. Good moderators can do it. Kyle Clark did a really good job of it during a recent debate with five (5) participants in Colorado, including shutting down Rep. Lauren Boebert when she tried to lie about deceiving voters.

I think she’s more right than you do. First, Trump has saturated the airwaves with misrepresentations of his term in office. He’s got his own ecosystem where people think he was the best and most successful president ever. Second, all his bad behavior has been normalized because it just doesn’t end and the media have tired of pointing it out. Third, the Republicans are great at messaging and, frankly, this has always been a Democratic weak point. The Dems have tried to publicize the accomplishments of this presidency but they have trouble getting people to see how exceptional and amazing the legislation has been. I could go on, but the media allows (and sometimes facilitates) Trump to get away with all his malfeasance. There’s only so many times that the news can report that Trump is a criminal and convicted felon.

I follow Allan Lichtman. He has an incredible track record for predicting who will win the presidency. According to him, Biden will win. Polls are not the best predictors of who will win. His 13 keys are the best predictors.

Especially when the stakes are only the survival of democracy itself, not only in America, but probably globally as well. No, Lichtman's key's haven't been tested longitudinally under circumstances like this, and it is foolish of him as a scientist to claim otherwise. He's happy being a media star, I'm sure, but scientifically, being right only 9 out of 10 times isn't anywhere close to the kind of certainty I'd like to see with democracy on the line like this. For one thing, the very fact that the incumbent has such low favorability ratings as he has had FOR YEARS isn't a good sign, and with people pinning inflation on him, the border, his inability to stand up to Trump AND Netanyahu, and this apparent dementia... It's an entirely different set of calculations for the voter. And with Trump as the R nominee, there is little reason to believe that an alternative candidate selected through an open "mini-primary" wouldn't electrify the nation and result in a potential landslide in Nov, which Biden is simply not capable of pulling off. THere's no reason to believe that an alternative candidate would not end up getting EVERY SINGLE ONE of Biden's votes plus many many more. The Dems just need to not be so afraid of democacy. And disagreement, and diversity. They can hold a series of town halls, stir up interest, get people excited for the Dem convention. In the meantime, the R convention would be (even MORE of) a joke, because they wouldn't even know who they'd be running against. There are a WHOLE LOT of upsides to this situation, if we would only just have faith in democracy... That thing we're wanting to defend....

Really, she should be decrying the thing CNN called a debate.

It sounds like Trump is on doctor-ordered bed rest. A week is a long time in politics.... 10 days rest 3 months out from the election is unthinkable unless it is for health reasons.

CNN had a bad format but were honest about what happened… one man lied a lot and still said nothing, the other could barely speak and sounded like he was very unwell…. For any future debate, there has to be consequence to lying. Like for example, if a candidate says something factually not true then they are penalized time from their response clock. Back during the "stand back and stand buy" debate. They had to change the rules because the past rules for a debate where created for normal presidential candidates. Well Trump is not normal. Special candidates require special rules.

The public’s collective memory about such things is very short. A lot of people have forgotten a lot of the awful things Trump did and just remember cheap gas prices (due to lockdowns, no one driving, and reduced demand) but forget the shortages and problems caused in part by Trump’s tariffs and other policies, and they forget how badly he mishandled the entire pandemic. They forget he ordered that peaceful unarmed protestors be tear gassed so he could walk over for a photo op in front of a church (that didn’t even want him there) posing with a Bible.

She and Wolf Blitzer and Brianna Keiller were my last hopes on CNN. Now, it's just two. But is it a last gasp? Abby has really been pushing back the last two or three weeks with guests on her show. Also to Trump's lies about knowing nothing about Project 2025, she said: "That's a bunch of BS, no matter which way you shovel it."

Calling someone out for their lies is not fact checking. So it is a weak argument that they agreed beforehand not to fact check.

It's not a hard job. If you can't moderate, don't moderate. Bring someone who can ask direct questions and only accept direct answers, following up with fact-checking. No dancing around, no BS. CNN, did you watch Kyle Clark moderating the Colorado congressional debate? No one even comes close.

Facts: 1) Joe Biden is not a boomer 2) Barack Obama is a boomer 3) GenX, Millennials and Gen Z make up a larger potential voting block than boomers. So, participate in the political process. Study civics. Vote in EVERY election (even if it is dog catcher), if you lke a particular candidate, campaign for them. Support them financially.

The comment regarding the issues with fact checking is a good point that I didn't consider. One way I think you can address this: After the interlocutor speaks, present fact-checked information with a source, and simply move on.

Abby Phillip sounds like a Fox reporter. I will never watch her or CNN.

If the CEO of Boeing were to say "you know, we just had a bad week" after a door flew off a plane mid flight and a cursory inspection revealed that bolts were missing from other Boeing planes, and then the press tried to shame the public from asking follow up questions about what was being done, when's the next time you'd want to get on a plane? "You know, it's faster than walking" isn't really addressing the concern I'm having.

I think nobody came out of this debate looking good, especially YOU Steve, where have you been!? There is no point in doing a debate if you're not going to fact check; that's not a debate, it'd be like if one of trump's requirements was that he get an armed AK. You know it's not a debate if you just shoot the other guy, just like it's not a debate if one of the candidates does nothing but lie and the moderators do nothing. If you look at game design and apply it to debating, that's giving the Gish Gallop a colossal edge, and that happens to be the only skill one of the two debaters has. Weird coincidence guys! At least that's the only one, it's not like we've been inundated with made up stories about how 'everyone wants biden to step down!!!!!111one', it's not like the media has a systemic rightward bias that's showing! Thank goodness US media isn't owned entirely by venture capital and straight up billionaires, neither of which cares about profit in the least, and that's why we have a plethora of zombie platforms out there that keep churning out trash content, they don't care that they're losing viewers, and if the site's nature is odious enough (ie a Feminist site) the tanking will be brutal, since part of the fun for the rich a-hole is tormenting good, honest people who want to see a better world (ie a world worse for the rich a-hole who hasn't contributed a thing to society in their entire life).
