    @@patrickimperial579 Reading marvel now is next to impossible since there are so many different interweaving issues and many of them have such similar names that jumping in is almost impossible. March alone had the following X-men Titles released: -Ultimate X-men -Weapon X-men -X-Men -X-men unlimited #129 -X-Men (vol 6) -Dead X-men -Fall of House of X -Wolverin (vol. 7) #45 -X-Factor -X-men unlimited #130 -X-Men: Red -Wolverine #7 -Wolverine #1 -Wolverin: Madripoor Knights -Xmen-Unlimied #131 -X-Men Forever -Immortal X-men -Rise of Powers of X -Wolverine (vol. 7) #46 -X-Force (vol. 6) #50 -X-men '97 (vol. 2) -X-men Unlimited #132 I grew to love Marvel and comics in general because I could walk into 7-11 [in the 90s] and buy Amazing Spider-man once a month for $2.50. I knew exactly what was happening because most of the time it even said "part 1 of X" on the covers. Now I have to go to a specialty shop and each one costs $8 for 24 pages and even though not all of them cross-over the vast majority do. Most people do not want to have to do research to find out what order to read something in and Marvel is making this way WAY to difficult to consume.

    I've been reading/collecting since I was 16 {1989}, and I can say w/o the least bit of fear of contradiction, that the Krakoan Era is the best and greatest thing to ever happen to the X-Men. Superheroes and supervillains together, United against a common foe: humanity. Johnathon Hickman is the greatest comics writers ever. He revamped the FF, the Avengers, then the X-Men. He's a genius

  • @FandomSage

    I share that sentiment! It is fascinating to read the characters within this status quo and see that there is cooperation but they are still who they are and those character traits still present themselves through a lense of compromise or in some of the "good" characters case a lense of extremism. Great stuff

  • @Evil0tto

    @Evil0tto

    Ай бұрын

    I'll contradict that. Been reading X-Men since the early 80s, and this is the most incoherent, bizarre, and out of touch era in the history of the franchise. The idea that humanity is the foe goes against everything the X-Men ever stood for and is just typical of nihilistic writing that we're flooded with everywhere in the 2020s. The X-Men have been turned into a race cult, and the idea of letting absolute monsters like Apocalypse and Sinister in with a "OK, now promise to be good!" is idiotic. Getting rid of death turns every character into Kenny from _South Park,_ cheapening death until it doesn't really matter. And the less said about the Mars thing the better. That made my eyes roll back in my head so hard I saw my own brain. Hickman is a terrible writer. His ideas are dumb, and the sooner they press the inevitable reset button on this whole era the better.

  • @FandomSage

    @FandomSage

    That is a strong opinion and i know there is a segment of comic readers that have criticized the Krakoan Era and I continue to engage for discussion but it seems the same talking points are repeated and either they haven't actually read any of the story and are speculating based off others assessments or just completely missed the messages aand themes but maybe were genuinely turned off by the new dynamics but can't really elaborate on anything specific. The Krakoan Era isn't supposed to make fans warm and fuzzy. From the jump there is an uncomfortable feeling that comes and goes as the story goes then it really sinks that its all unsustainable. We have been following a sinking ship for 4 years but that is the crux of the narrative and the resurrection protocols are a major plot point not a deus ex machina as many incorrectly assume

    @@Evil0tto yes, the X-Men's mission, the hope of a better world where humans & Mutants can live, together & coexist. That's Xavier's dream. But that doesn't change the fact that humanity is our greatest foe. All of Xavier's good intentions in the world doesn't mean anything, because no matter how many times the X-Men have saved the world, & the universe, humanity still hates us. I have seen many people say that certain mutants were out of character but that was the point of the arc. The mutant history we knew was amended and characters were set on different paths and put in unprecedented situations but some were more revamped than others. Xavier, Sinister, and Beast were pretty different but not unrecognizable. Xavier is closer in ideology to Magneto and vice versa. Sinister is very sassy and sarcastic but I found it works really well. Beast went full supervillain tho arguably he's been on that trajectory for years

    @@FandomSage True, but the whole Moira Mactaggart being a reincarnated mutant bit did feel a bit forced. They weren't placed into new situations but rather forced into them and pretended like it was always meant to be. Moira being a mutant further complicates the already messy marvel timeline and it just feels out of left field. I'd argue it would've been more interesting to create a a new character with that concept of re-incarnation, and build them up, giving newer mutants with even more interesting roles. I also don't know why at some point Professor X mindwiped Franklin Richard's and lied by telling him he was never a mutant or something. I think that was because of Dan Slot, and I remember people being kind of annoyed by that decision. It just felt like that retcon served no purpose. Also, is it me or did the whole Gala event last 3 years? Because they talked about it in 2020/2021 and then I only found about everything that happened after around last year? Idk if I was out of the loop but I could swear they spent too much time focusing on it.

The Moira plot was the best part of the story and it's presented right up front and explained the mechanics at least . She is a very secretive and complicated woman and her beef with Mystique and Destiny was amazing! Moira being the catalyst works better than a new character because you understand her function due to her comic history and a lot of the plot is so well put together i may have believed someone had intended for this reveal years ago lol.

And it felt really needed after years of status quo for the X-men (tbh I kinda enjoyed Bendis’ run on X-Men but the stuff that followed after the Original 5 were sent back in time was incredibly boring.) This current Fall of X storyline seems like it’s taking years to complete. So now we’re in a weird place, where we’ve finished with a great period of X-men storytelling. But not yet into the next era. The issues feel like filler anime episodes within 6-7 books with two overly complicated background arcs (The Dominion/ Moira) being weaved in here and there. Personally, I feel like I need a tutor or at least some Kabbalah classes to understand the esoteric nature of The Dominion storyline. It feels like a struggle to read through.

I loved how Al Ewing wrote defenders beyond and left a door open for an entire team of heroes outside the xmen preparing to battle that new menace but thanks to the rushing it doesnt look like that plot thread will lead anywhere whchi is a shame. Personally I dont think we should avoid esoteric concepts as complicated as they get but they should at least be better explained.

    @@ggez3109 Do you have any examples of where the esoteric concepts introduced are explained well in comics? Grant Morrison did some esoteric stuff with Jean Grey’s death/unlocking of the Phoenix consciousness within her. And with the introduction of the White Hot Room and Black Bug Room. Unfortunately he never really defined what the WHR was. And he gave us White Phoenix of the Crown (chakra) but I’m not even sure the next writers who wrote Phoenix stories even understood what that meant lol. When I first read those books as a teen with very limited life experience, I had no idea what I was reading. But when I went back and read those books again in my 20’s I got a ton out of them. And to date New X-men is one of my most re-read runs on the X-Men. Louise Simonson tried to expound on those concepts recently in her Jean Grey (2023) 4 part series, where she wrote Jean from the viewpoint of her actual self as well as her higher self. And after 20yrs finally gave the reader an explanation of what the White Hot Room actually is. (Seemingly it is the realm of infinite possibility where thoughts become actualized, accessed by mutant dna) In these instances, I’m not sure that the themes written were explained well. They were more of a ‘IYKYK.’ But as I’m only and X-men reader, I may have blindspots where there are better examples outside of that fandom.

    I still maintain that Jonathan Hickman was overwritten by his protégés (Tini Howard, Leah Williams, and Vita Ayala) and they took it over after they kind of saw the writing on the wall: This is an overarching storyline about the dangers of AI and how it takes Humanity & Mutantkind working together to overcome At least…if you follow the threads left by Inferno (which it wasn’t originally meant to be) 🤷🏽‍♂️ They probably didn’t want to write within those guidelines, so they had Jordan White remove him from his own project and gave him the Ultimate Universe back instead. Such a shame since he clearly spoke about how much he wanted to do the X-Men in the past, so his whole “I got burnt out” excuse falls flat

    @@FandomSage Not only did Jonathan Hickman step down just before Inferno #1 came out, but he made a statement about it. He admits that he “got burnt out” (not in those exact words) and is leaving it to his co-writers that he started the “Krakoa Arc” with. He then came back a while later to do an Amazing Spider-Man one-shot plus G.O.D.S. and Ultimate Invasion & some Ultimate Universe books (most notably Ultimate Spider-Man), which felt more like a compromise and trade for his vision of the X-Men in exchange for the return of the Ultimate Universe. Speaking of, the Ultimate Universe was meant to return in full-swing as a spin-off of Donny Cates’s Venom run from 2018-2021 under Cates’s writing…but then he went off the deep end and left Marvel while he was still writing Hulk w/ Ryan Ottley 🤷🏽‍♂️ Hickman’s departure absolutely derailed everything and the Krakoa Era stalled into oblivion shortly afterwards, with Kieron Gillen sort of being tapped as his successor but it not really working out. What I’m ultimately getting at is that the current Krakoa Era is basically just a giant filler arc and what Hickman originally wanted (which was something incredibly epic) was sort of hijacked by his co-writers and turned into a bizarre soapbox for their ideals

Were there rough patches sure as should be expected in grandiose endeavors. The X-Men have always come with the Hurculean task of wrangling dozens of characters with decades of history and presenting these beloved characters who mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people, in a fresh and compelling narrative. The concepts and characters dynamics explored in The Dawn of X have been priceless imo and at the very least worth the construction of this new mutant order. The X-Men join forces with all the villains to form a eugenics assisted ethnostate. How far we have fallen.

  • @KazinWhitewind

    @KazinWhitewind

    Ай бұрын

    Hey, This storyline, while provocative and controversial, isn’t merely about forming an "ethnostate" or promoting eugenics: 1. **Resurrection Protocols as Eugenics?**: The term "eugenics" typically refers to selective breeding to enhance desirable traits. In the context of X-Men, the resurrection protocols aren't about breeding or altering genetic traits but are a means to recover from the constant threat of extinction that mutants face. This technological advancement is used to preserve lives lost in a world where mutants are continually persecuted and killed. 2. **Krakoa as an Ethnostate?**: Krakoa is indeed established as a homeland exclusively for mutants, but this is better understood as a response to their history of persecution, akin to a sanctuary. The creation of Krakoa as a sovereign nation is a desperate measure for survival in a world where mutants have always been marginalized. It’s about providing safety and autonomy, rather than isolating or promoting a superior race. 3. **Alliances with Villains**: The alliances formed with characters like Apocalypse and Sinister certainly raise moral questions. However, these alliances are depicted as tactical necessities in the face of existential threats, rather than endorsements of their past actions. This aspect of the storyline challenges readers to think about the complexities of governance and survival when no options are ideal. Mutants want to stop fighting amongst themeselves and instead embrace against the viral plague of persecution that is humanity. Keep in mind too, this is all pushed to extremes because Moira showed Xavier that no path, not his or Magneto’s or Apocalypse’s would work. This was the only path forward for them. We are meant to be uncomfortable with its radicalism. 4. **Exploring Themes of Sovereignty and Safety**: The establishment of Krakoa and the difficult alliances are narrative devices used to explore deeper themes of sovereignty, safety, and what a persecuted community might do to ensure its survival. These are not straightforward decisions but are intended to provoke thought and discussion about real-world issues through the lens of fiction. It’s also not the first time such attempts were made, Genosha and Asteroid M being other examples. This era of X-Men is meant to challenge perceptions and push the boundaries of traditional superhero narratives. While it might be uncomfortable, it’s crafted to reflect on and provoke discussions about serious themes like survival, trauma, and the moral complexities faced by those under constant threat of annihilation. The narrative isn’t devoid of controversy, but it serves as a rich allegory for examining the darker, more complex aspects of society and what measures might be considered justified under extreme circumstances. Cheers!

    If you can find reprints of the Chris Claremont/John Byrne run, then read them. The Dark Phoenix Saga and Days of Future Past remain some of the most seminal comics in the history of the medium. There’s tons more, but for expediency, I’d jump to Grant Morrison’s New X-Men run, THEN read House of X/Powers of X, and the books that spin out from that. Sone are excellent, some are..not, but read the most recommended ones, I’d recommend‘Immortal X-Men and X-Men Red, then MAYBE AXE (Avengers/X-Men/Eternals) then Sabertooth and the Exiles, which shows the dark underbelly of the Krakoa experiment, then The Sins of Sinister mini, then go the Hellfire Gala ‘23, which is the beginning of the end of this era. A lot? Not really, and there’s some good stuff in the historical and modern books. And there’s no rush; read them at your convenience. I won’t be reading the full Fall of X until its in trade later this summer.

    I grew up on the X-men. I love the X-men. They'll always have a warm place in my heart. Hickman has had some iconic runs on series. His Avengers, Secret Wars, and especially his Fantastic Four runs are excellent. The majority of comics fans love his X-men run. As shown in this video and the comments of the viewers, this series and run on X-men is clearly beloved. I hate it. I hate it with a passion. I find it poorly written, morally bankrupt, full of arrogant "realpolitik" from someone that clearly doesn't understand politics or social systems, tons of deus ex machina where problems are solved by new sudden powers and abilities, tons of meaningless game-of-thones-like intrigue that is ultimately meaningless, and terrible, terrible character development. Literally, the X-men are written as fascists, and their fascism is "justified" in the writing, and characters rarely ever ask any questions, and the readers just love it. I just don't understand how anyone could have been reading the X-men since the 70's and like this take. it's a betrayal of all the series stood for. But it seems in the 2020's, people are just eating it up. I think that says a lot about our media and where we are as a culture today.

    well art always reflects life and much you say i can agree with as far as the thematic interpretations. I am far less fatalistic, however. I see this era as a pseudo WhatIf? but a lot of moral discussions were had and are continuing because of Hickman's radical vision. I didn't find it provocative for provocative sake because imo opinion the X-Men have been pushed to this point for a loooong time and I think its quite understandable that a scenario like this could play out. Moira living multiple lives and try multiple paths to a future of mutant prosperity and ultimately watch if fail every time really underscores the losses mutant kind has endured over the decades. Then she presents all that knowledge to Xavier who merges his original vision with Magneto's tribalistic view of society and a fascinating new Xmen paradigm opened up. I can see way more grey in these stories but i love that. The X-Men were always striving to be seen as heroes and shitted on, That is not what this tale was about. it was about mutant sovereignty and prosperity and a collaboration of ideologies that separately had failed but together could achieve much.

    @@FandomSage I think it’s because the Decimation got me down. As did stuff like AvX and IvX. And, jumping in, I kind of came to terms with the fact that the only characters I will trust any writer to write consistently are Fenris. Because you will never be accused of character assassination LMFAO. I mean, I saw first class trilogy and went “You’re connecting Mystique to Xavier and Magneto over Nightcrawler and Rogue? And she has a psychic who fe who is pushing 100 with Those Legs that you’re just not mentioning? When did the hurt begin?” New Mutants happened. Not great but decent. I see Wolfsbane and Dani hook up and I’m thinking to myself “Oh thank god, we don’t have to deal with Nate Grey or the 30 years of Wolfsbane’s character careening off a cliff… but what did they do to Sunspot and Dr Reyes?” So I’ve been catching up the past year, been listening to some stuff on that podcast (The “Dating Polaris is gay” of it all was funny and made some sense). At this point, it’s like I have my version of Telenovellas.

    @@FandomSageYeah. Frankly, I came to the realisation that the X men were my telenovella soap operas, I thought to myself “that explains everything”. And, whilst the only characters I trust marvel to get right are Fenris, I’m mostly just enjoying the ride.

    This entire concept of Resurrection Protocols did not go well with me. To me, the characters we like so much died. Many in very stupid and reckless manners and we have now a bunch of clones. Even many aspects of personality of the characters changed tremendously.

    It's all in how you look at it. They didnt reinvent the wheel. Characters being brought back from the dead is a part of comic culture. We come to expect it its just the 'how' that leaves us guessing. In HOX Hockman eliminates the need to wonder how by setting up the protocols as a part of the system in Krakoa and presenting it like a utility or government service. There are criteria and a que and some are banned and not everything goes according to plan all the time. I think it was rather brilliant and added some provocative social commentary and political strain on the mutants

    there are tons of resources online for suggested reading order which is essential when its the Xmen because the team is massive. The thing is its not a race. Enjoy the content in your own time at your own pace or skip it. I stopped reading comics for about 6 years then jumped back in but Dawn of X really got me excited about the Xmen again. Ultimately everything isnt for everybody and that's ok. Joy can be found elsewhere if you look

    The timeline is reset but as we know that doesn't necessarily erase or destroy it. The TVA prunes these type of timelines but they aren't accessible through conventional time travel. There is a term that escapes me for these type of alternate timelines. What is important is that everything in them actually happened. Knowlege Moira gains is legit but only she remembers. Moira is also able to hide her true nature and become immune from detection from technology and telepaths and even precogs to a degree which is where the beef with Destiny comes in

    I said nothing about the age of the characters...The mutant community...within the context of the fictional comic book Marvel Universe have collectively been targeted since WWII at least. Also being treated like crap constantly for pretty much your whole life probably can't be quantified. 20 years old or 70 years old being discriminated against is messed up. They have seen multiple futures where mutants are hunted...hell two of their children have lived through dark timelines so my point stands. The Dawn of X is just another arc in the comics landscape and it's canon as canon can be. No point lamenting things you have zero power to control. Find joy elsewhere

    People really love this story and I don't get why. I was talking to a friend about this a month or two ago, I told him these sorts of stories are why people are jumping to mangas and ditching Marvel. Death means nothing anymore. No "sacrifice" is really a sacrifice because that character died like 20x already and you know they will be back. I remember seeing the X-men die in this comic and coming back to life on the same issue (maybe it was the next, I can't remember) and thinking how lame it was. In the end, I am glad people are enjoying it, but for this is weak.

    I hear this a lot from people claiming "lazy writers" when in fact you're a "lazy reader" who can't grasp themes and concepts and instead bash the material and attempt to alienate people who do understand the story's message. If the only thing I see a person bemoan is the resurrection aspect I know they didn't read or can't comprehend.

    Moira being a mutant with reincarnation abilities is SO interesting that I hope that we get to see it adapted, either in the MCU or in X-Men ‘97. I don’t imagine this would actually happen, it could technically happen after the events of episode 5. [SPOILERS for X-Men ’97] It was specifically called out that Moira, a human, being on the Genosha council was strange, and she ended up being killed along with Banshee and many others. They could have her eventually return somehow with the knowledge of the events that transpired.
