Are YOU good enough for COLLEGE BASEBALL in 2022? EV/Sprint/Velo Benchmarks

After playing Division 1, Division 2, and Pro Ball, here are my recommended benchmarks if you want to play college baseball. I have heard a lot of misinformation on the subject, and wanted to make a guide based off my playing experience and numbers from the MLB.
If you are not close to these numbers, that is OK! Many players peak later on in their career, and take longer to develop. These are simply recommended benchmarks so that you can have something to shoot for.
In this video I cover:
Exit Velo: (90-95mph)
Sprint Speed: (7.0 60 YD Dash)
Arm Strength: (80-85mph IF, 85-90mph OF)
These numbers are based off pro comparisons, and four years of college baseball where numbers were regularly recorded. These seemed to be average to above average numbers, and these were roughly the averages amongst our starting lineups.

Fr you'll never run 60 yards in a straight line, honestly depending on your position the only meaningful metrics are exit velo, and throwing velo from your position.

How accurate is the exit velo tool for measuring your true raw power? I mean when you train in the off-season is it the go to metric for seeing how you’ve developed or is how far the ball goes in BP? I’m just curious how to gauge my power development as a player.

  • @coachrac

Good question!! It definitely doesn’t tell you everything… I mean, a lot of times when I get my exit velos up, I am rolling over a lot, and my swing isn’t as good. But I think most schools use it as a main metric because it shows how high your Celling is. It shows what you’re at least capable of, and then they can develop you the rest of the way.

To be sure, yes it is too old. Unless you have either 1) Elite talent and no one has heard of you for some reason OR 2) Extra ordinary talent AND a notable and compelling reason to take a roster spot away from someone who is potentially 18 or 19 years old and has a bigger development arc in college and beyond. Again, there are certainly late bloomers in baseball, but at 25 the college baseball book has been written for the majority of people.

There’s nothing more heartbreaking seeing that a 14 year old throws 94MPH even though it’s complete bullshit. I’m 19 and still can’t quite crack 90MPH. @@Cole.30 Ofc man words of wisdom and encouragement are the best. If there’s any tip I could give you to improve your pitching velo is to include plyometrics into your workout. Plyometrics improve acceleration and explosiveness which are key factors when it comes to pitching velo. It sounds like you’re already putting up great numbers and if you start doing plyos your game will be taken to the next level.

I’d say for your age just try to throw as much as you can and to do some long toss. My favorite way to do it is to go to my local middle school football field and work out to about 90% of my max distance twice or three times a week, doing lighter throwing on other days. Also doing mobility work and yoga will help a lot. As you get stronger, you should try your best to stay as mobile as possible. And also make sure always do proper warm up and arm care.

My 13-year-old is a 5-tool stud on his 14U national showcase 5 Star team. Not sure what his exit velo off the tee is but he already has warning track power on 350-400 fields. He also tops out at roughly 82 mph on the mound, sitting at 78-79 a few months ago, and has five legitimate pitches already. Do you think him going to a power 5 school is achievable?
