Are you concerned about your safety? | The Grief Tour Pt 1

This is the first part in my trip home for my grandmother's funeral. In this episode we ride through Central Oregon, Stanley Idaho and up to Corvallis, Montana. Including a few anecdotes about some odd strangers I met and their questions on this trip.

Another wonderful video! One time in a group ride we met an old biker in Berkeley, CA that told us something about an accident he had been in and the doctor told him that he was lucky to survive. And it was because he was NOT wearing a helmet. Then he proceeded to quote the doctor: “HELMETS DON’T BOUNCE, BUT HEADS DO.” (Our group is full of AGATT people.)

Nice scenery. Yeah, it seems that when some folks see an individual on a bike that's loaded down, they are compeled to approach and ask 20 questions. That has been my experience. It was really nuts when I traveled to the West Coast and back. I guess it's something in them that when they see a motorcycle vegabond (in their eyes that is), the desire in them arrises and wishes that they could escape the daily grind of life in general and go as far as they would desire as well.

I really need to start keeping a journal when I go on trips. It definitely helps you remember things that you might otherwise forget. I love the sketch journal as well, and even if I can't get myself into vlogging, at the least I'd like to keep my own photojournal, sketchbook, and all that. I don't typically interact with many other people while I'm riding, but I'm guessing that's just because I'm a single guy on a bike, which is probably relatively common. If I'm not by myself, I'm with my wife, and she and I both have enough social anxiety to just stay away from everyone else 99% of the time.

  • @AstheMagpieFlies

Special thought for past-Amanda and future-Amanda regarding grief. Grieving is the process we are privileged to endure as a result of loving someone else nearly unconditionally. Hard to consider it a privilege, I know, but if we never loved another, we'd never know nearly irrepressible grief.

Amanda, youtube is taking me on a non sequitur tour of your channel's older videos, showing me Pt2 before Pt1. Everyone handles grief differently. My paternal grandmother died before I was born but by all accounts, I really missed out on knowing her. It's wonderful you had a relationship with yours. As to strangers: Oh hell yes I've got stories. One was a saga that went on all night and was very similar to a Scorsese movie called After Hours, it's a dark comedy that I recommend if you haven't seen it.

I know I am way too late, but I am sorry for your lose. You are an amazing young lady to even have a passing thought for us at a time when most people would only be focused on themselves. When I am riding alone I am the weird stranger asking questions to myself and about myself. I am 6'1" tall in my bare feet and weigh 230 lbs., so when I am dressed in my boots and riding gear I look sort of large, so most people probably don't have much concern for my safety. Also, my Super Tenere is matte gray (I guess) and I wear hi viz gear so some people think I am a cop so they try to avoid me.

I feel the same be aware of your surroundings, who & what is discussed with people (I carry few items to put my family at ease). People are either excited/interested/amazed *especially if it's a solo female rider or totally opposite. Also as well as all the beautiful footage you taped on your adventure😃. I was puzzled, she said she hadn’t seen me since Christmas and was worried something was wrong with me or the dog. It turned out she passed me every day before and I had changed my route. So two years ago I was out riding and I rode my Triumph Tiger to Three Forks hot springs in Oregon. When I got there there were a couple guys down there with a pretty good size tent setup hunting. One of the guys walks out comes right up to me and says what are you doing? I replied that I'm hitting a challenge Point, part of the Idaho Adventure motorcycle club and that I'm am just here to take a picture. His immediate reply was, I can't believe you rode that two wheeled contraption here. I was surprised to see a pickup truck in that area because the train is pretty rough although I agree with him the street tires on the tiger probably weren't best suited for it either. The situation had me feeling like the guy was going to shoot me and bury me out there in the desert somewhere so I quickly took my picture and left. I hope to visit bayhorse sometime this year as well thanks for sharing the video. PS I'd like to add I think it happens to all of us that shoot video for KZread and ride motorcycles that we just kind of go silent. I'm glad to see that you overcame it and still were able to put the video together.

The strange part came when they asked if I was armed and able to protect myself with anything other than my sized and fist. I opted for the safe of answer of let's just hope for someone looking troubles sake, they didn't bother me. After that the convo shortened and they left. You’re making me want to get an adventure bike! Looks like it was a pretty rad trip. Weirdest convo was definitely a guy whi was camping at the same state park as me, fed me a steak (honestly i couldn’t say no. I was so hungry and i watched him prep and cook it so i knew it was fine) and talked about the oil rig henworked and in West Texas and the coyote named Wiley that would visit him st the rig every day. It’s been 4 years since then, but I’d say it was definitely one of the most random convos I’ve ever had. I can’t remember the rest of it anymore

I've been meaning to watch this video for months. Finally made it! You still have tolls that are not automated over there? What is this cash that you speak of? :-p Wow! Pretty uneventful? What about that scenery though! Amazing! I love that ghost town. When I was in the USA I only visited one ghost town, but nothing as cool as that! I'm sorry for your loss. It's a rough time for sure dealing with the loss of a loved one. The grief comes in waves and sometimes, unexpected out of nowhere. There are some weird people out there that's for sure, but thankfully there are more than enough kind hearted people to make up for the weirdos! lol

Thanks Mr.AusAdventure! Sorry this one wasn't one of my more upbeat ones! Yep There's like three bridges along the Columbia Gorge that are toll bridges and yaaaa none of them take card. I once got yelled at by one of the gals because I didn't have any cash or change on me. Yes! The scenery was gorgeous once I got a little further into Idaho, but once you get passed John Day, OR the rest of the riding until you get to like Idaho City is kind of .... bleh Ghost towns are my jam! lol Thank you!

@@AstheMagpieFlies We can't be upbeat all the time. It's honest and that is what's most important. As long as it's only the really important big things that we let get us down and we can cruise happily through the less important issues in life, then it's OK to be down and to grieve. :-) That's so weird about the tolls, as all the toll bridges, tunnels, freeways etc here in Australia are all completely automated now. You haven't had to stop in order to pay for years anywhere that I've been. I think 2013 was the last time I saw one you had to stop at to pay. Most people have accounts and those who don't, have 3 days afterwards to pay the toll either by going online or by calling up with their credit/debit card. I'll have to keep an eye out for more ghost town vids then! Do you watch Tim Kreitz? He is always riding to ghost towns in West Texas.

They are flabbergasted that I am enjoying the scenery and being alone with my thoughts. Too much reliance on technology, I guess. Actually, my bluetooth headphones broke on day two of my epic journey from southern AZ, up the Rocky Mountain States to SD, and then over to home in Vancouver (~3200 miles). Well I dont really interact with folks on the road, its something I really gotta work on. I want to be more social when I'm out there. I'll tell you a story from this weekend on my way back from West Virginia to Northern Virginia. There was a little boy (probably 4 years old) helping his dad pump gas, after filling up I moved to a lot nearby. That kid and his dad drove over to the same lot to wait for the mother who was picking up the kid. The little boy waived, I didnt notice, he said "hello", I couldnt hear him, so he complained and started stomping his feet until I turned and his parents were red in the face laughing. "He gets real upset if he's not acknowledged", we had a laugh, I said hello to the kid and we chatted briefly. It was really nice, I tend to keep to myself in fear of running into weirdos.

Hi! "Funner" is not actually a word, I'm probably not the best example of correct English. As far as the maps go, I animate them in Photoshop using the Animation Timeline. I make the map graphic, then draw the line frame by frame, and export the video file. I then lay it over the footage in Premiere Pro.
