What is your managerial style? Are you direct, passive aggressive, somewhere in the middle?

Lead by example.. Do not ask your team to do something that you will not do yourself. Get in the dish pit or start doing roll-ups. They'll notice 💯

Thank you for making this video- it will never not be relevant. I think something to mention is the toxic habit some managers have of calling people out during preshift without "naming names"- basically talking about something specific that one individual did but it's being discussed in front of 10 people who have no idea what happened or who is being discussed. It inadvertently creates tension & gossiping- also it takes up precious time. If you have an issue with something a server did you should pull them aside & talk about it constructively. It's kind of like Full Metal Jacket when everyone has to pay for one person's mistake. It brings down morale & starts the shift off with a dark cloud which can last an entire shift. Calling people out by name during preshift is unacceptable- unless it's a funny story or something. I've worked with too many managers that love to do these things & somehow don't see how it affects everyone.

Hourly employees can be very sensitive from even a dot of criticism & they may leave quickly especially in today’s day people are very sensitive so no one wants to call people out. I usually avoid criticism & usually just ask nicely what I need instead of saying what they’re not doing or doing wrong not saying I’m right but that’s what I’ve turned into based on past experiences.

I was an Exec Chef and GM for a long time, and I admit I was fairly passive aggressive, and I was a nitpicking micromanager as well. Not until I went back to being an hourly employee did i realize i was a little over the top. I think the respect I always got from my team was that I killed myself to make sure everything was right, and I had as much compassion that I could for their personal life. I was never really good at "business is business", but overall I was very successful ... even though I really hated managing people, especially as a chef. What do you do with people who don't have much motivation in life?? And the "culinary school" cooks........ the worst of em all.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can NOT make them drink. If somebody has no motivation in life, you will not change that behavior in a reasonable amount of time. Hire better people.

Somewhere in the middle, sometimes a little passive aggressive as you say, avoiding conflict 🤔
