Are Winter Trackdays a Waste Of Time?
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Industrial action and a lack of planning led to this video. Bedford Autodrome is a circuit I haven't visited before for a trackday, but as it's Kevving's local I popped down the A1 to try it out.
The day started out the coldest I've ever seen at a track, and the organisers were understandably frozen, in more ways than one. The M3 had quite an eventful day and I had some fun with a pair of JDM roadsters.

As an employee of the old Royal Mail i'm glad we could make this happen for you
At least there’s fewer caterhams about when it’s -5 out
Not a waste of time, just done a day at Donington yesterday, bloody brilliant
I used to get carb icing on my nova... It would freeze the fuel and make the butterflys in the carbs stick wide open.... super scary always in minus conditions to🥶
Hello cheeky Danny content on a Sunday afternoon 👌🏻 That’ll do nicely chap!
Bedford is my local track and a great place to test setup changes or just jump on the afternoon session for a bit of cheap fun. Although flat it has a great mix of technical sections and very fast corners. It’s also pretty safe and hard to hit anything trackside.
Obd devices definitely can cause weird issues, even in modern cars, so worth carrying on without and seeing if that was it. Really enjoy your videos
Subaru smells of watermelon 🤣🤣🤣
The drought is over, interesting to see your opinions on a different track! Look forward to the MX-5 vid!
I'm so pleased that corner foxed you as well, took me an embarassing number of laps to get the hang of it!
niiiiiiiiiiiiceeee, that Wii intro was fun and creative 👌 EDIT: the editing throughout the video was fun and creative :)
nice surprise seeing this video! Thanks for putting it together Dan!
Brilliant Dan! Been having with drawls with no new videos then a notification comes up. 👍🏻
Great stuff our Dan
Top video so far, Loving the Max and Paddy clips 🤣🤣
Nice one mate 👍🏻
Yay your back. I’ve been rattling like a bag head waiting for a new video. 😂
Yes Dan
This is my local track, and I love it. Great to take people that have never been on track before because of the ruin off. Come back in the summer and set some proper lap times

My local as well and all I can say if you come back is to make sure you budget for some new brake pads. Very hard on the brakes round there.
Looked chilly but fun! I once had throttle not closing on me in my e36 m3 at Hartside and i totally agree not fun! almost didn't stop in time, just as well i did as there was a nice cliff i would of ended up at the bottom of. Good to see the E46 getting used, may get some track days in mine again this year.
The red scooby & the white FTO look sweet !!
Great vid again dan did a td there in Nov and my stock megane rs 300 trophy was hitting 135 down the long straight with a pie enthusiast at the wheel so encouraging 👍
That kids laugh as you slide his mx5 around was great, not and ideal track day but some good takeaways it looks like
You know it's gonna be good when there's Wii sports music in the intro
lookes still like a good time overall, later in the day looked nice, track looks nice aswell!
Hi Dan , Great video.... I found Bedford , value for money a really good track that you can push your limits with the length of track and loads of different types of corners it has got to be one of the best tracks. Well worth a trip back in the summer.
Ambition higher than adhesion t-shirt with an s2000 spinning out
You, Monky London and Camber and Combustion are the best car youtubers by a long long way!
I was out on this track day too in the red RCZ R. Great wide track with alot of run off. Was a good day out, apart from my brake fluid boiling towards the end of the day lol.
Great video this, marshalls were absolutely sleeping in the beginning
Legend
The black e46 tourings at the end should try do a daily driver track day
The big lass is a Toyota Crown, Danny. Great cruisers, yet to be convinced of its track car credentials
Yeah I needed a satnav here. Ace fun in slippery conditions though
Hey Danny.👋 Winter trackdays a waste of time? If this one's any indication, definely not. That clear, frosty morning view going in was spectacular. With below freezing temps, you knew you wouldn't be setting any track records, but it looked like good, relatively cheap fun and y'all made the best of it. The Wii tunes set the mood.😁👍 Also, the 🍉 puffs coming out the Subaru got me. Haha. The stuck throttle was a bit unnerving though... can't blame you for not continuing to push it. Good to see the Irish Tiff's offspring with a big smile on his face again. Cheers for livening up my lazy Sunday afternoon, Dan. Have a good week ahead, sir.
A vehicles OBD is not designed to be constantly accessed, so wouldn't be at all suprised if those dataloggers which connect through the port can overload them. That alone could be your issue. Best to find out for sure somehow since you certainly don't want a moment like that again! Well done for staying cool.
Great vid, got the posh casio there, the only car that benefits on sighting laps is the one behind the lead car, for everyone else it is pointless. For a winter track day that was fairly decent weather, I would prefer that to windy with rain all day, that said this is the UK you could get that in summer. Thanks for the entertainment.
Cold snap oversteer
Check the throttle body clamps on the the airbox are not interfering with the throttle body link bar when under load and things move about if you’ve used jubilee clamps
Kevin is the definition of full send !
Woah throttle :o Winter days are perfect for shaking stuff down and learning new tracks. You do have to have the right tyres/setup though or it's a proper waste of time! I had a Snetterton day that started 2 hours late when -3C overnight and overnight rain had frozen the track, turned out my 'wet' tyres were crap so it was futile, but I learned a lot for not much cash. Same conditions 6 weeks later at Brands and had a great time of it with decent tyres! Hope the throttle turns out to be a simple fix.
Tyre selection and temps can be a bit of a challenge but definitely worth it there are alot of temperature related pros to it.
I was chasing a problem with the E throttle on a couple of my 46s . Always happened when it was sub zero temps …. Sometimes after sitting on the motorway for a while at a constant speed but mostly when first started . My theory was always an old super cold icy actuator . It was definitely worse when I had a bumper fed air box
Bedford is the only track I've ever known to make more sense in terms of where to go on a PS2 game than in real life. The joys of barrierless airfield tracks I guess
Winter days are perfect for trackdays.
I'd say they're good if you want a hoon and a cheap day etc, but trying to chase times or feel upgrades pretty pants. Good if theres a few mates etc having fun. Done loads in rwd, but did fwd few weeks back and it was sketchy as fook on MRF's zero heat in the rears.
I'll be here on the 20th!
Honestly I’d say learning all different variations of track conditions is important as a racing driver low temperature surfaces are just as important as optimal temperature tracks learning the limits of track and car are essential hence why I do my sim racing on real weather I haven’t touched an optimal track conditions in years as the variance helps adaptability in difficult conditions
The Caterham out in winter time hehe
best video ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The S2000 sounds ace!
Ah yes. It isnt a good Sunday without some ddc2 content 👌 Looked like a decent day all in all. Tps issues with a new genuine part has surely got to be either a wiring or a software issue 🤔 Wild guess but linking the 2 unexplained things together then that strange noise of something catching didnt turn out to be a broken abs wire catching on the wheel did it?
Last time I was at Bedford was in a VX220 with suspension that was far too stiff!
A good day with the buds it seems.
When you do come to Scotland look up tracktion track days. Good fast group of cars

Luv’n the MX5’s…!!! 👍👍👍🤣🤣🤣💥💥💥
Could've been the Egas linkage bar that opens the throttle body flaps, my old E46 M3 sat for a few months over winter in 2019 and when I went to get it going in spring it failed the check that it does before letting it even start to crank. You can watch it go through a full open/close procedure when it initialises by turning the key to No2 (step before cranking). Turns out mine was frozen solid! Gave it an encouraging tap before spraying it with some good ol WD and that sorted it out. Ended up taking the whole intake manifold off and cleaned out the throttle bodies at the same time. The TPS modules in these are shit, having 3 of them doesn't help either! I always kept at least one of these and a couple of MAF sensors in my glovebox as my car went through one MAF a year. Only started doing that when I fitted an eventuri CAI. Didn't even buy the knock off cheapos from fleabay either, they were all Bosch OEM stamped.
Went full LeClerc in this one eh.
That subaru was probably smoking from having a atmospheric BOV while still on a MAF tune.
Glad you said the rx8 wheels are too big on NC, one of the worst mods people do on them
Stuff doing trackdays in winter, I’m not going out until Mid March 🥶 Could throttle be the linkage catching on something, when I fitted my CSL airbox in my old e46 it was catching on rubber boot clips and I had to fiddle about with it to clear.
Could well not be an electrical issue. Check the bodies open/close by freely by hand (just push on the actuator rod and they should snap back to being closed quickly)- the link bar joining each of the bodies can get a bit stuck in the solid bushings and can cause them to stick open. Spray of GT85 in the bushings and a bit of wiggling them open/closed will sort it. You’ll get the limp mode you saw when the throttle pedal tps and the TB/actuator TPS’s don’t correlate (there’s 3 TPS in total)- it’s safety measure to stop a full on brown trouser moment.
It's all good, if ya don't end up on the grass at least once ya not tryin hard enough lol
great video again!! 1 question what app do you use for the data?

Hi Dan, I work for a marketing company called Gold Times and I wanted to reach out to you for a big time deal to take you all the way. We could start with your look. I know your into mullets and I think that is a great look for you, but I’m thinking we could go blond at the back and name you the Golden Eagle, I know this look is Hollywood but you can pull this off and make it big time good. This is only the start of the master plan, if you want to make it big time then reach out and we can talk and maybe discuss other thing like what happen if you have green eyes, what happens if you had power of the world at your feet like a 2 liter VTec engine, and cats.
I like bedford, usually suited to faster cars but my s2000 gets on alright there. Long drive for us Yorkshire boys though
What oil do you use for that cold weather Do you stick to 10-60 I’m in Canada I’d be worried driving it in winter we get - 30 lol
track needs a on site gritter 😂🤣
Knockhill wont dissapoint u
Hi! Sorry to bother - I have a question regarding suspension. What coilovers are U running? Im looking for something to my S-type Sport to make it more track-focused. Cheers!
Hey Dan I have a question for you. What are you're thoughts of roll bar vs roll cage? Mainly for a track day car, not a serious wheel to wheel racecar.
@GregoryCavill
Жыл бұрын
Not that it makes much difference but roll bars normally assume oem seats and roll cages assume buckets and harnesses . A cage is safer than a bar . Factory cars have a roll bar from factory , but if you’re using a convertible you might want to upgrade to a cage

So what do you actually reckon about winter track days? I live in a part of Canada right at the very southern tip, where it almost never snows, and certainly almost never enough to make it impossible for the track to be clear of snow and dry. I also organise track days up here in Canada. I know that like 90% of track day guys put their cars away in the winter because of the salt. But, the 10%, maybe they'd have a go
no foot cam because you were spotted not foot braking at the 'Ring? 👀🤔😅
4:18 ? Spoiler? You gonna continue racing the MR2? did i miss something? Awesome 360 from kevv . Already back in a ina new ride? s2000 nice nice. I assume the Dc5 is history?

Had the S for some time, but it doesn't see much use. DC5 will ride again, I just need to find some money and motivation.
