Girmay does an excellent job of surfing the field, he doesn’t get hung up on having the perfect lead out, he uses his team to keep him close and safe then uses the best wheel he can follow to get him to HIS sprint point. Totally agree with what you guys are saying about Pogacar and Vingegaard. And every casual or hardcore fan of the Tour should be watching this video starting at 18:57 and REALLY listening to what you guys are saying in response to that person's comment or question. I've been saying this since the first time Jonas won the Tour. Tadej is the more talented rider overall. Tadej is literally one of the best overall Road racers ever. Is top 5 or at the worst top 10 in the world at every single thing needed to win in bike racing. But... Jonas is THE BEST of his time, possibly ever, at the Tour de France, how the stages are setup, and the high altitude long steep climbs of the Tour. NOBODY is as good as he is in the long Mtn stages. And that is where the Tour is won or lost. So even though Tadej is coming in to this Tour just CRUSHING every other race and in the best form of his life, Jonas is THE BEST climber of his time and maybe ever. And what's even more impressive, is that Jonas is clearly not at 100%. The crash almost killed him and took him away from training and racing for over 3 months!!! Then to see what he was able to accomplish yesterday is just insane. He has the heart of a champion and for sure is the favorite to win now. Great video guys!

Seems there needs to be some qualifiers added to the safety cut-off distance. Minimum group size at time of incident, perhaps (like 15% of the total peloton)? I'd say they could judge based on if the incident was reasonably unavoidable, but there's too much grey area around "reasonably". Certainly doesn't seem right to be in a group of two, have a self-inflicted crash, and not lose any time to the guy in front, especially when we're talking about a top GC contender pushing to consolidate his ranking.

  • @papajustus

Yes, very interesting idea. I do remember at least two times Roglic came down seriously due to road issues, that not have been propper secured by Le Tour / road security. It is not to blame Roglic or other riders for the faults of the organization or the UCI but de facto it is like that. The same in the sprints: if deviation is finally relegated, the hampered rider still suffers of the deviation and mostly looses his/her fair chance to win. Like it happend to WvA today again. The relegation only does not cover the time (and energy) loss of the deviated. This is unfair. There should be something more/other to prohibit deviations or even better to compensate the deviated rider.

I think Pogacar could win this year TDF but he ride more like he try to entertain the crowd rather than actually win it. His spectacular attacks are just waste of energy in fight with someone like Vingegaard. At some point he might just have crisis, that will make him loose plenty of time and the whole race. From the spctator perspective I like Pogacar, because he at least make this race fun to watch. No matter if he win or loose people will like him and he will be great cyclist anyway.

On the topic of Roglic being give the same time as Evenepoel on the previous stage during the crash, the real question is why the race organizers had the 3k rule in effect for what was essentially a primarily uphill finish? The only justification that I could see is that there was the downhill run, where Roglic crash, that directly preceded the short uphill drag into the finish. Perhaps the organizers were anticipating a large group hitting that section at the same time and wanted to 'protect' the GC riders if that was indeed a large group finish?

thb i still wonder how the teams can be all in on the marginal gains thing but then don't do everything possible to protect their riders from any illness (especially at a Grandtour with no weakness possible for 3 weeks straight through). Would have expected staff with masks and teams carrying airfilters everywhere Just like their mattresses for the riders but obviously they still have space for optimization in this part of grandtour-cycling 😅

Jimmy, give it up. Jonas is the most boring rider I’ve ever seen. No spark. No excitement. Total vanilla. Tadej is the most thrilling rider to come along since a juiced up Lance Armstrong.

Watching Jonas ride is like watching paint dry... don't like the guy at all.. cannot believe a word that comes out of his mount... he said at the beginning.. oh I am just so happy to be able to start... and now? And Wout...so much pain today.. constantly at the medic car.. and then he almost win the sprint... bunch of liars.. and don't come with tactics.. this is just being g very dishonest and bad characters imo..

The person who wrote in about Pogacar and double-standards is actually right. In the sense that it clearly shows people will always find excuses for Pogacar no matter what. Last year the excuse was that he didn't have the best preparations and Jonas had the better team in the mountains. This year when Jonas had an even worse preparation, and a worse mountains team..... new excuses will have to be made up. Let's see what the new excuses will be.

Tomorrow is gonna be a roglic break, They’re gonna do a 2022 stage 7 trick and keep roglic in at the top 4. One can hope, but definitely a 70% break away chance and if the peloton’s not gonna be lazy.

Pogi is being underestimated 100%. First, the final time trial is close to where he lives. He will have done many recon rides on the course on his TT-bike. In last years TT, one of the justifications that Jonas was able to gain so much time in the TT was that Pogi was not able to really do recon rides on the course due to his injury. Second, it was said that one of the strategies by Visma last year was to make the race extremely hard for Pogi right from the start, because they knew that it was impossible for him to get enough training in to raise his training stress scores to his usual level and hence they would eventually wear him out. This year it seems that UAE are going with the same strategy. Don't be surprised if Jonas suddenly cracks.

Also calling Jonas the better stage racer is just not backed up by their results. Tardej also has two Tour wins. In addition, he won the Giro. He has more wins in 1 week stage races. Further, he won many more individual stages in those races. Don't forget he is two years younger as well. Potentially his best years are still to come.

I’ve been thinking about this, for me unless Jonas attacks hard in the mountains. Pogi will win this tour. Theres no other way. Jonas has no team to attack pog. Or we will see role reversal and they will use Almeida to attack Jonas over and over like they did to pog. Either way it’s going to be exciting.

I don't agree Jonas is the best TDF rider.. his tactics might be the best.. nut NO WAY is he better than Pogi. Johan Bruyneel said that Pogi would have already won the TDF 4 times if he had better tactics...

Maybe Pog wins 2022 TDF with better tactics (if you want to ignore the fact that he heat up and lost time on a climb, don't know how much tactics would help with the heat) but 2023 he flat out got beat by Jonas, blew up on a mountain stage and lost a lot of time. Also, "so and so said a b c" isn't a strong argument. Please go learn your logical fallacies, in particular the appeal to authority fallacy
